10 Companies That Are Sabotaging Your Body Image

1. Victoria's Secret

1. Victoria's Secret

Victoria's Secret is the first company most people think of when it comes to unattainable body standards. Their “Perfect Body” campaign only featured undernourished-looking models. Their annual fashion show only includes that same model type, and their stores bombard you with images of the same, perfect, blonde model.

2. Abercrombie and Fitch

2. Abercrombie and Fitch

Abercrombie and Fitch (A&F) found itself in hot water after its CEO stated that he didn’t want ugly people wearing A&F clothing. Additionally, their models and store associates are required to be “hot” and seem to be a size zero. Sadly, they haven’t shown any indication that they’re going to change anytime soon!

3. American Apparel

3. American Apparel

American Apparel is very fond of edgy advertising, including placing unhealthy-looking models in compromising positions. On their website, they don’t offer sizes any bigger than a large, and even those run small. Many healthy-sized people can't even fit into their clothes!

4. Express

4. Express

Express' clothing is high-quality and affordable, but they could really afford to bring body diversity into their advertising. They’ve had several big-name models in their ads, such as Karlie Kloss and Hailey Baldwin. You know what those models are primarily known for? Their slender figures.

5. Forever 21

5. Forever 21

Forever 21 likes to live on the edge, and a big part of that edge is rail-thin, disheveled-looking models with almost no exceptions. There’s nothing wrong with this body type, but they should also cater to those who are shaped differently.

6. Nasty Gal

6. Nasty Gal

Nasty Gal considers itself to be a company that takes pride in empowering girls and women. After it got leaked that they fired a woman for being pregnant, plus several other discriminatory terminations based on appearance, I’ve lost respect for them.

7. TopShop

7. TopShop

Topshop is steadily gaining popularity in the U.S. When you visit the their website, the first thing you see is a huge image of nine waiflike models with angular faces. If you have nine different models in one photo, wouldn’t it be a better marketing tactic to showcase nine different body types?

8. Calvin Klein

8. Calvin Klein

Calvin Klein and Kate Moss started the “waif” model trend and continue to follow it. Their hashtag is #mycalvins, but they’re excluding and discouraging a huge group of people from buying their jeans and undergarments by not showing them on any body types other than those like Kendall Jenner's.

9. Nikibiki

9. Nikibiki

Nikibiki is widely known for their high-quality athletic wear. Because of this, you would think that they would show a variety of healthy bodies on their website. Do they? Nope, they just stick to the ultra-skinny one. They need to learn that healthy comes in many shapes and sizes!

10. Levi's

10. Levi's

This popular jean company is busy promoting their new cut, “Wedgie Fit," which is strange enough. What makes it even worse is that I can’t find a single model on their website who is bigger than a size two. I hope they realize that they need to cater to their entire, variety-filled customer base.
