6 No-Commitment Ways to Change Your Hair

Are you in the mood for a change, but have some commitment issues? No, we’re not talking about relationships; we’re talking about your hair. Especially if the biggest change you’ve ever made to your precious tresses is chopping off three inches, it can be nerve-wracking to consider any kind of alteration. Fortunately for you, here are six worry-free ways you can change your hair, and if you hate it, it’ll be gone before you know it!

  1. Pastel Hair
If you have the crazy urge to dye your hair a wild color, pastel temporary hair color is your solution. You can dye your entire head of hair with a bottle of Redken’s Color Rebel Hair Makeup ($24 at ulta.com), and the color will wash out within a few shampoos. If you decide you like the pastel hair look, you can purchase a jar of the more permanent Manic Panic ($10 at sallybeauty.com).

  2. Chalk Painting
You can create a dip-dye effect, highlights, lowlights, or color your entire head with this temporary hair color. You can buy chalk specifically made for your hair at the store, but many people have had better results with actual chalk pastels (the type artists use). You can find inexpensive pastels at any art supply store ($5-$10), but make sure to not buy the oil-based pastels. This coloring method will only last until you wash your hair, so it’s great if you want a change for one night.

  3. Ombre
Ombre hair is a great option for those who want a semi permanent hair color or potentially a permanent hair color, but don’t want to have to keep up with coloring their roots. Try out some semi-permanent color first (about $8-10), and if you decide you love your ombre locks, go the permanent route for around the same price.

  4. Extensions
Want longer hair, but it takes a literal eternity for your natural hair to grow a mere inch? How about extensions? You can get semi-permanent extensions done at the salon, or you can purchase clip-in extensions ($50 and up) in case you decide that you don’t like long hair quite as much as you thought you would. You can simply take them out before you shower, and your hair will be back to normal.

  5. Kool-Aid Dye
Kool-Aid is incredibly useful for quenching your thirst, but it can also temporarily dye your hair a cool color. Depending on your hair color and type, the dye can last anywhere from two weeks to six months, so be careful if you have blonde hair! The best part is that Kool-Aid is very inexpensive, so you can give yourself rainbow hair even if you’re on a budget. Just be sure to buy the unsweetened kind, and dip-dye your hair to your heart’s content.

  6. Colored Hairspray
Take your hairspray game up a notch and buy some colored hairspray ($3-5). It’s a great temporary option because it will wash out with your next shampoo. So, whether you’re wanting to turn your hair blue to support your favorite sports team or you’re going to a themed party, go crazy with it! Just beware that it may wash off on clothes or furniture, so it’s probably not best for frequent use.
