The Best Hairstyles for Mature Women

Wild and Wavy

Wild and Wavy

The beachy, wild and wavy look is a fantastic choice. Even if you don’t have naturally wavy hair, you can use a bit of salt spray. Just spritz and then scrunch your hair up. You’ll get the “back from Maui” look in no time.

We also suggest getting a little color that accentuates this look – something like an ombre or balayage. This will make your hair look super dynamic in the light!

Layered Bob

Layered Bob

Layered bobs are so in this year. This style uses a side-swept bang technique to create a subtle asymmetrical look, another popular trend this year. The important thing about this look is to find a stylist that can do layers seamlessly.

This is a choice that looks particularly fantastic with highlights. Go with what would look best with your skin tone and natural hair color. Blonde and brown is beautiful, but auburn and brown looks even better.

Shadow Roots

Shadow Roots

Shadow roots are a relatively new trend. It popped up late last year and stuck around. What we like most about shadow roots is that they look like they’re done purposeful, rather than just looking like your hair grew out from your last dye.

As this style grows out, it will look more like an ombre. If you want it to look even more natural, you can ask your stylist to put in highlights to create a balayage.

Clipped Back

Clipped Back

As the ’90s makes its triumphant return, lots of trends from this era are returning. One of the biggest is claw clips, and we’re totally thankful for it. We miss the claw clips from back in the day because it was so simple to throw your hair up and go about your day.

Another great thing about claw clips? You can make your hair look classy with a few strands hanging down and a stylish clip, or you can just go for the “I’m getting stuff done today!” style without hair in your face.

Blunt Bob with Bangs

Blunt Bob with Bangs

We love bobs, especially blunt bobs, but you know what makes them even better? Bangs. Blunt bobs with bangs are super iconic, whether it’s wispy bangs or thick, lustrous ones.

With this hairstyle, don’t be afraid to customize the length. We suggest never going higher than your chin line. As far as bangs, you can go as short as you want (within reason), and it will still look stylish.

Highlights

Highlights

The ’90s are coming back, and we’ve also heard rumors through the grapevine that block highlights are coming back. We’d never go that far, but there’s nothing wrong with drawing inspiration from the technique.

These highlights are a little thinner, but still has the dramatic contrast of light-on-dark. The customization is limitless with the number of shades hair stylists offer, so don’t be afraid to play around.

Middle Part

Middle Part

Whether you’re 20 or 60, you should move your hair part. Leaving it in the same place can cause your hair to lose shape and volume. Many of us go for a deep side part, and that’s precisely why we put middle parting on this list.

Parting your hair in the middle is popping up all over the red carpet, and it’s just a matter of time before hairstylists encourage their clients to give it a shot. We promise you’ll gain a little root lift if your hair isn’t used to it.

Curtain Bangs

Curtain Bangs

Not everyone has enough hair to get blunt bangs all the way across their forehead, and that’s okay! That’s why curtain bangs were invented, and they look just as good. In all honesty, they can look even better.

Curtain bangs are parted down the middle and are designed to frame your face. This means it can look even more flattering for some face types. They’re usually longer on the side for a blended, wispy look.

Layers and Volume

Layers and Volume

Layers and tons of volume will always be popular, but it can be tough to obtain. We’re not going to say that this style is quick to do, but it is worth it in the long run. All you need is a hairdryer, a round brush, and a curler.

Some women even choose to sleep in their curlers and then take them out in the morning. This certainly cuts down on the amount of time it takes to do your hair, but it can be uncomfortable to sleep in.

Classic Pixie

Classic Pixie

The classic pixie is just that – classic. It has and never will go out of style. It’s easy to maintain and doesn’t use a lot of product. Classic pixies also still give you a few style options.

This cut also means you can get your hair dyed at a fraction of the cost. If you do it yourself (although we suggest going to a salon), you’d really only need one box. It takes a second to get used to if you’ve never gone this short, but it’s totally worth it.

Side-Swept

Side-Swept

Side-swept looks good on every hair type, but if you have thin hair, this is the one we really suggest. The long layers help frame the face while also removing some weight and giving your hair volume. Best of all, this style suits everyone.

Another thing we love about side-swept bangs is that they don’t need to be trimmed every few weeks, which means you’ll save money in the long run. As a note, side-swept bangs only work with side parts.

Curly and Voluminous

Curly and Voluminous

We absolutely love this wild and curly look. Even if you don’t have naturally curly hair, you can get it permed or just curl it yourself. If you want more volume in your hair, you can brush or tease to give it more va-va-voom.

This style also looks great with highlights or layers because it creates a dynamic look that catches a ton of light, especially when moving around. If you have thinner hair, the layers will make your hair lighter, so there’s less to weigh it down.

Fringe Bangs

Fringe Bangs

Whether you’re going with long hair or short, fringe bangs are the thing to get. They’re back in style and great for women that can’t fill out the classic blunt bang look. Lots of celebs are going for the fringe bang look because they grow out really well.

As your hair gets longer, you can part your hair into curtain bangs, and then eventually transition into a side-swept hairstyle. It’s almost like having three hairstyles in one over a period of time!

Half Tied Back

Half Tied Back

If you have a lob or longer hair, we suggest you try pulling half of your hair back. You have a couple of options when you do this. You can pin it back with a pretty pin or barrette, you can leave it as a small ponytail, or you can braid it.

Braid your hair means even more style options! There are tons of techniques you can practice from the classic braid to the fishtail style. There are tons of guides online, but nothing is wrong with simply tying it back really quickly. This is one of our favorites.

A-Line Choppy Bob

A-Line Choppy Bob

Whether it’s a dress or hair, count us in for an A-line! This is a subtle A-line with bangs rather than a sharp end. It’s an updated look on a style that’s been pretty popular for a few years now.

Not only do you have hair to play around with (or tie back if you wanted), you don’t have a bunch of hair on the back of your neck to keep you hot during the summer months. It’s the best of both worlds!

Spiky Pixie

Spiky Pixie

The spiky pixie is one we haven’t seen in a bit, but it’s certainly time for it to make a comeback. This style leaves the top of the hair longer so you can style it however you want, but the sides are kept short and trimmed.

This one would require more salon visits than a bob, but it would save you time in the morning. Less washing, less styling, and faster drying. Also, this looks great with shadow roots or highlights!

Pulled Back and Teased

Pulled Back and Teased

Some days, you just have to pull your hair back. Even if you don’t have super voluminous hair, this style can look great with a little teasing at the back of the crown.

Try pulling it back with a scarf. It definitely takes practice, but it’s worth it in the end. Plus, think of all the designs you have once you get it down!

Sleek and Smooth

Sleek and Smooth

Straight hair was popular in the early 2000s, and it’s slowly making a comeback. Now, getting hair shiny may take a bit of work. Healthy hair is typically super shiny, but there’s more you can do to get that light-bouncing glow.

First, use a clarifying shampoo once a week. Second, consider getting UV protectant to prevent the sun from dulling your shine. Third, invest in a hair oil. This moisturizes and protects your hair. Finally, when all else fails, use a mask!

Lob with Bangs

Lob with Bangs

Lobs are one of the all-time best hairstyles. They look great and offer plenty of customization. If you’re unsure whether or not you want bangs, it may be best to get a simple lob and then cut from there.

You can’t really go back after bangs, but all hair grows, so no worries! If you’re used to long hair, lobs may also be a better choice, so it feels less dramatic and overwhelming (unless drama is your thing).

Low Bun

Low Bun

This one obviously needs long hair, but less hair than you’d think! When tying your hair back, you can pull a few strands out to fluff it up and make it seem much larger.

High buns are out of style, and low buns are the new go-to. For this one, leaving a few strands of hair out to frame your face creates a romantic look (in a cute, messy sort of way).
