Photography has been around for almost two centuries now—the first photographs are believed to have been taken as early as 1826! However, color photography has a much shorter history. The first successful color photos were taken in 1907, but it didn’t really get popular until the 1960s and 70s.
This means that much of the first century of photography is relegated to black and white photos. Or does it?
Thanks to the great advances made to photo editing technology, pretty much anyone can try their hand at the art of colorizing black and white photos. The process might not be the easiest, but for those with the patience and skill, it’s possible to make the past come alive in full living color like never before!
In this slideshow, we’re counting down the most iconic, stunning colorized photos from history. These photographs depict the whole spectrum of the human experience—from the fun and lighthearted to some of the darkest moments in humanity’s past.
