Funny American History Memes That Aren’t Just For History Buffs

These are depressing times

These are depressing times

America sure did have its highs and lows over the years, and for some reason, they tend to correlate with wars quite often. Think about it – an economic downturn before World War 1, then the War causes a 10 year period of prosperity.

Then, America enters the biggest economic collapse of all time in the 30s but is once again saved by World War 2, which brings the ‘Baby Boomer’ growth with it after it ends.

Oops I did it again

Oops I did it again

Sometimes the message just isn’t quite clear enough the first time, so you have to send it again. In the case of the United States and Japan at the end of World War II, that message cost hundreds of thousands of lives.

When the first Nuke didn’t make Japan surrender, the Americans simply dropped another one, and this time the Japanese didn’t mess around and promptly surrendered. But now the whole world is scared of a third Nuke.

You weren’t supposed to do that

You weren’t supposed to do that

The Cuban missile crisis was one of the defining moments of the 20th century. It was the closest that the world came to Nuclear War, and was avoided by mere inches. It started when the US placed nuclear weapons near the USSR in Turkey.

In order to counter that, the USSR sent ships carrying nuclear warheads towards Cuba. the US made a no-cross line that would have triggered Nuclear War. Thankfully, this was avoided.

The Europeans: It’s free real estate

The Europeans: It’s free real estate

Something that you don’t really realize when you’re young is that colonialism is bad. Not like kinda bad, but really bad. It was totally unethical, and many of the countries that were colonized by the Europeans ended up in much worse spots than before the Europeans arrived.

The Euros made it seem like they were only there to enrich the lives of the African people, but we all know that they were just using that as a good reason to go and pillage all of the resources that the continent had to offer. You’re not slick.

NASA welcomes all

NASA welcomes all

It’s no secret that after World War 2, NASA recruited some Nazi scientists into its ranks, so we wonder what kind of awkward conversations around the coffee table had to be going on between them and the many Jewish scientists who also went to work for NASA.

We can’t imagine that there was any friendship going on there, and we’d very much like to be a fly on the wall for those very awkward moments.

Great Success

Great Success

The rivalry between the United States and the Soviet Union was legendary. They went down in history as the ‘Cold War’, which was basically just one big “Who has the bigger stick” competition. .

So while at the time it didn’t feel like a laughing matter, it’s pretty funny to look back at it today and joke about what boiled down to a pretty silly fight between two ideologies that shouldn’t really care about each other

France just surrenders

France just surrenders

It’s a well-known meme fact that France is the ultimate losers – they surrender and lose just about every war they take part in. Members often point to World War 2 as the prime example of this, when the French were rolled by the Germans and gave up their vast country within days of the invasion.

But the actual history is much kinder than the memes would like us to believe, with the french actually being a formidable foe throughout history.

I was there

I was there

There is just so much wrong here that we don’t even know where to start. But whatever, we know that video games really don’t have to be beholden to historical accuracy, so we really wonder what would have happened if America really did exist during the middle ages.

They probably would have found a great way to spread freedom and peace for everyone everywhere, with their own crusades of truth, justice, and the American way.

13th Amendment vibes

13th Amendment vibes

Okay, this one might get a little dark, but bear with us. While many people today claim that the Civil War was about State’s rights, they kind of leave out what those rights are – the southern states were defending their right to hold human beings as property.

Clearly, this ideology did not age well, but still, many people today try to justify the Civil War by claiming that it was never about slavery to begin with.

McImmigrant

McImmigrant

People today might seem to forget where they came from, but many Americans today are descendants of Irish Immigrants, who just moved over to America to escape British prosecution.

If you’d ever wondered why you love Sunday Night Football, and the beer that comes with it, look no further than your great grandfather’s Irish origins, and everything will make much more sense. Also, we do wonder why so many of them just stayed in Boston, it’s freaking Boston, why would anybody want to live there?
