The Reality of HGTV Home Decor Trends

Limewash Walls

Limewash Walls

Limewash is a type of paint made from crushed limestone, water, and pigment. It has been used for centuries as a decorative and protective coating for walls, particularly in historic and traditional buildings. When applied to your home, it can give your home that old-world charm you might be looking for.

However, it most applications, it’s not going to make your home look like something out of HGTV. Unless your house is immaculate, its just going to look like your walls are dirty. Limewash walls can be drab and really bring down your space. Without the right lighting situation, it just looks depressing.

Shades of Grey

Shades of Grey

Gray hues have really taken off, especially on shows like Property Brothers. While gray may be fairly neutral and not be prone to falling out of trend like some colors, gray certainly has its problems. Like limewash, too much gray can be depressing and make your home look really dark, even with plenty of lighting.

Color is not the enemy. It’s okay to incorporate colors in your interior design. Gray floors have also become common, and this feels like a way to cover up dirt more than anything. In practical application, there’s nothing elegant about a bland grey floor in terms of either carpet or faux wood.

Curved Plastic Chairs

Curved Plastic Chairs

The curvy, colorful plastic chairs of the ‘60s have seen a resurgence, especially on numerous HGTV shows. People looking to add color and get those retro ‘60s vibes have gravitated toward these chairs, but there’s a reason they’ve gone out of style. They were a fad then, and they will be now.

Curved Plastic chairs aren’t even the best part of the ‘60s. They are just plain tacky. There are other ways to incorporate bold colors that don’t require you to resort to plastic furniture. From rugs to wall art, there are about a million other things you can do that will actually match the rest of your furniture.

Glass Furniture

Glass Furniture

Glass furniture looks stunning when you see it on TV. Both modern and sleek, glass furniture is certainly stylish, but that wears off fast. The reality of glass furniture is that it takes a lot of maintenance and care to keep all your furniture looking pristine. Just because it looks good on HGTV doesn’t mean it works in real life.

In real life, a glass coffee table or end table is going to gather fingerprints like a non-chain coffee shop attracts hipsters. There’s no way to keep your tables looking shiny and clear around the clock, especially if you have kids. You’ll be wiping up fingerprints for days, and there won’t be a thing you can do about the scratches.

Floating Stairs

Floating Stairs

Floating stairs may seem cool in theory. They look great from afar because they look different, but the reality of floating stairs is that they are extremely impractical. If you’ve ever tripped and almost fell down the stairs, you’ll be much more likely to trip and fall with floating stairs.

The open design of the floating stairs leaves a lot more room for accidents to happen. Of course, HGTV is all about them because they achieve that open floor space that they are all about right now. But this is just another design trend that leads us to believe that perhaps an open floor thing isn’t the best way to go.

Shiplap

Shiplap

Shiplap is one of those popular HGTV home décor trends that people have tried to apply in the real world, and it just doesn’t work. Maybe they saw it on House Hunters at some beach home, and then they thought it might apply to their own home. But the problem is that not everyone has a beach home.

In fact, most people don’t have a beach home. So, going for a beachy aesthetic and trying to use it in your suburban home doesn’t look right. Even if you went through a beach house aesthetic throughout your home, it doesn’t make sense. Not to mention, you’ll have to keep it clean and maintain it for it to look nice.

Edison Bulbs

Edison Bulbs

Edison bulbs have become a popular aesthetic choice in terms of interior design because of HGTV and home decor magazines, but they are extremely impractical in more ways than one. Unless you have an antique home, Edison bulbs aren’t going to do your home any favors. They will only look out of place.

You are talking about a serious clash of antique and contemporary if you even have a TV in your room. That being said, Edison bulbs also lack energy efficiency and practical use. They provide only dim light. They aren’t a sufficient source of light for your kitchen, dining room, or anywhere else. They only look that bright on TV because you see them during the light of day or under studio lights.

Open Floor Plans

Open Floor Plans

At this point, you’ve probably seen countless shows where the interior designer is knocking down walls to achieve an open floor plan. But open floor plans aren’t really the end-all-be-all when it comes to interior design. They present a lot of problems for the average human being as they go about their daily life.

For one, they afford no privacy. Knocking down walls means people can follow you around with their eyes, wherever you go. You can’t find a moment of privacy in your kitchen or sit in the dining room to eat without someone looking right at you or talking to you. On top of that, there’s no room for clutter of any kind, because people can see it from every point of view. Let's just bring rooms back! K. Thanks.

Floor to Ceiling Curtains

Floor to Ceiling Curtains

Floor-to-ceiling curtains are said to elongate a room, at least according to some experts. But, apparently, HGTV designers never really thought it through because we can think of several reasons why they are a terrible idea for many people. They are incredibly difficult to maintain, and over time, they won’t look nice at all.

When touching the floor, floor-to-ceiling curtains will gather dirt, discolor, and fray at the top and bottom. Next, anyone who has pets can forget it because your cat will be dangling from them in no time, tearing them to shreds. Or, if you have kids pulling on them, it can be a safety hazard. On top of that, they can make your space look cramped, and they can interfere with the heating and cooling efficiency of your home.

Subway Tiles

Subway Tiles

Whoever is responsible for this trend is a menace to society. Keeping any tile clean isn’t easy, and not necessarily for the tile itself but because of the grout. The grout gets filthy over time, and it can be a real pain to keep it clean, and it will never look perfect.

Before you know it, your kitchen will end up looking like an actual subway – dirty. So, unless you want to spend countless hours scrubbing tile, it doesn’t make sense to opt for subway tiles. Don’t feel the need to turn your entire wall into a giant backsplash because you are just inviting yourself into a world of trouble.
