These Were the Messiest Celebrity Breakups in 2023

Reese Witherspoon and Jim Toth

Reese Witherspoon and Jim Toth

The actress shared news of her divorce on Instagram back in March. Reflecting on the end of her 12-year marriage to Jim Toth and comparing it to her public divorce from Ryan Philippe in 2006, she told Harper's BAZAAR, "It’s interesting what happened to me. When I was divorced before, the tabloid media got to tell people how I was feeling or how I was processing, and it felt very out of control...All I can do is be my most honest, forthright self and be vulnerable."

Sofia Vergara and Joe Manganiello

Absolutely no one saw this split coming in a million years. The picture-perfect couple announced their divorce in July, after 7 years of marriage. Vergara opened up about her rollercoaster year with People,  saying, “I’ve had a very interesting year. I don’t want to say ‘bad’ or anything like that, but it’s been very interesting and very difficult. I went through a divorce this year, the SAG strike that went on for so long. I’ve seen my friends struggle—some had to take their kids out of their schools or had problems with their mortgages, so it’s been a weird, weird year."

Britney Spears and Sam Asghari

Britney Spears and Sam Asghari

One of the first freedoms Britney enjoyed once her conservatorship ended in 2021 was tying the knot with longtime beau Sam Asghari. Her happily ever after didn't last long, however; Asghari filed for divorce in August, after just 14 months of marriage.

Britney, never one to mince words, shared her feelings on the matter—where else?—on her Instagram: “As everyone knows, Hesam and I are no longer together … 6 years is a long time to be with someone so, I’m a little shocked but … I’m not here to explain why because its honestly nobody’s business !!!" Here's to hoping she'll spill the tea in her next book!

Glen Powell and Gigi Paris

Glen Powell and Gigi Paris

The on-again-off-again couple called it quits earlier this year, and it seems like the classic case of one person becoming more famous and busy. A source told People, "Gigi and Glen had broken up several times. They had been on the rocks since Top Gun came out. Gigi was never happy with the long-distance filming, and when she came to Australia [where Powell was filming Anyone But You] they both decided to break up for good."

The messy part comes in where Gigi unfollowed his costar, Sydney Sweeney, on Instagram. But sources close to the model claim it was a matter of Sydney never following her back and not because she thinks anything happened between them.

Cher and Alexander "A.E." Edwards

Cher and Alexander "A.E." Edwards

It's a good thing Cher is a very rich man and sees men as simply dessert, because the legendary singer has to believe in life after love after going through another breakup in 2023. Cher was first spotted out with the music producer in the fall of 2022, and in March of this year, Cher spoke publicly about the two collaborating on music together. A source close to the couple reported the split was "amicable."

Sophie Turner and Joe Jonas

Sophie Turner and Joe Jonas

This one has a lot of messy details, so I'll do my best to give the short version. Joe Jonas, of The Jonas Brothers fame, filed for divorce from goddess wife and Queen of the North herself, Sophie Turner, after he reportedly eavesdropped on her via their Ring camera and heard her saying something that hurt his fragile feelings "made him realize the marriage was over."

Joe (or his PR team) then went on a smear campaign, with anonymous sources telling tabloids they split because Sophie wanted to go out and party, while poor, father-of-the-year Joe was devoted to staying home with their two children...which definitely checks out because he doesn't drink on stage while touring all over the world with his Jo Bros. Because Sophie totally didn't say back in 2020 that "everything seems to be working out in my favor here because Joe is a real social butterfly and I struggle to lock him down and just spend time with me. It's like a prison for him, but it's great for me." No, no, the woman alone is to blame.

Hugh Jackman and Deborra-Lee Jackman

Hugh Jackman and Deborra-Lee Jackman

Now this one really gutted us; the couple, who tied the knot all the way back in 1996 (making them one of the longest-lasting Hollywood couples ever), announced their separation in September with a joint statement to People: "We have been blessed to share almost 3 decades together as husband and wife in a wonderful, loving marriage. Our journey now is shifting, and we have decided to separate to pursue our individual growth." A source also told Entertainment Tonight, "They felt like it was time to divorce, but they still maintain a happy and cordial friendship."

Taylor Swift and Joe Alwyn

Taylor Swift and Joe Alwyn

This is one breakup we continue to discover new details about every other week, despite the pair officially (publicly) ending their six-year relationship in April. Taylor's feelings around the breakup can be heard/felt on recent songs like "The Great War" and more specifically in "You're Losing Me," where she croons, "my heart won't start anymore for you."

Jack Antonoff, producer of the top girlypops and best friend of Taylor, decided to get real messy and post a picture from the night he and Taylor recorded the heartbreaking track: on December 5, 2021—more than two years before they called it quits. We Swifties still haven't recovered.

Ariana Madix and Tom S(c)andoval

Ariana Madix and Tom S(c)andoval

The Scandoval heard 'round the world (or at least the Bravoverse)—Vanderpump Rules fans were shooketh when news broke that Tom Sandoval cheated on the beautiful goddess, Ariana Madix, with their mutual friend, Rachel (aka "Raquel") Leviss—and cameras picked up to catch all the ish hitting the fan.

The details got crazier and crazier as they leaked; not only did Tom cheat on his girlfriend of a decade; he did it repeatedly, for about seven months—one time specifically while she was out of town for her grandmother's funeral. But to quote the great Taylor Swift, the trash always takes itself out. Period.

Maren Morris and Country Music

Maren Morris and Country Music

After her heated back-and-forth with Jason Aldean's wife earlier this year, Maren Morris decided she'd had enough of the culture wars waging in the Country Music scene. "The stories going on within country music right now, I've tried to avoid a lot of it at all costs," she told the Los Angeles Times in September. "I feel very, very distanced from it. I had to take a step back."

She later clarified that she wasn't leaving country music behind completely, telling the New York Times' Popcast podcast in October, "I love living in Nashville, I have my family. There's a reason why people come there from L.A. and New York to write with us. It's because we have amazing songwriters there. That's not gonna change."

Maren Morris and Ryan Hurd

Maren Morris was busy burning bridges in 2023. She also split from her husband of 5 years, fellow musician Ryan Hurd. She marked the end of their marriage by covering Tammy Wynette's song "D-I-V-O-R-C-E" in a TikTok.

Jeremy Allen White and Addison Timlin

Jeremy Allen White and Addison Timlin

Jeremy Allen White had a rollercoaster of a year. After finding new fame starring in The Bear, rumors about the star stepping out on his wife of 3 years, Addison Timlin, began circulating. Once Timlin filed for divorce, White decided to slow things down a bit. He told British GQ in November, “With everything going on in my personal life, I thought, ‘OK, let’s just pump the brakes in general, and maybe you don’t work for a while. I made this choice to not work for the rest of the year and just be with my daughters and just slow it all down.”

Ricky Martin and Jwan Yosef

The singer and his longtime love split earlier this year. The pair met in 2015 and married in 2018. They released a joint statement to People: "We have decided to end our marriage with love, respect and dignity for our children and honoring what we have experienced as a couple all these wonderful years." Martin also told Telemundo Puerto Rico that "Jwan and I will always be family. We have two children together that we will raise together."

The two musicians called off their engagement after just less than a year. Mod Sun revealed how he feels about the breakup on his track "Strangers," where he sings, "I remember loving you before we ever met / Saw you on a TV then I met you through a friend / Then I started talking to you on the internet / Went from strangers to lovers to strangers again."

Kaitlyn Bristowe and Jason Tartick

Kaitlyn Bristowe and Jason Tartick

This one still hurts. The best Bachelorette of all time, Kaitlyn Bristowe, split from her longtime beau and fellow Bachelor alum, Jason Tartick, after five years and a beautiful life built together filled with a podcast engagement and two adorable golden retrievers adopted in Nashville. They had been engaged for the majority of their time together, and fans were getting restless for them to tie the knot. But instead, they decided to take some time apart.

But not all hope is lost; they've remained co-parents to their two dogs, reunited at Chris Harrison's wedding, and Jason had this to say on a recent podcast: "I've always been a guy that's door's shut, move forward. This is a lot different, a lot different: five years, two years engaged, and the dogs. So I don't know." Here's to hoping those two find their way back to each other.

Will Smith and Jada Pinkett-Smith

Will Smith and Jada Pinkett-Smith

Although the world's messiest marriage remains intact legally, Jada revealed that the two have been separated since 2016 and refer to each other as "life partners" instead of spouses. The couple wed in 1997, and Will described their first encounter as "love at first sight" in his 2021 memoir. But their marriage has long been plagued with rumors of an open marriage and infidelity, and Jada never stops talking about her first love, Tupac. At this point, we all wish they'd either break up or shut up.

Jodie Turner-Smith and Joshua Jackson

Jodie Turner-Smith filed for divorce in October after four years of marriage and a slew of red carpets left slayed. “She refused to settle for something that didn't feel right,” a source told Us Weekly. “[It] wasn't working for her, so she ripped off the Band-Aid.” Joshua Jackson has since moved on quite publicly with actress Lupita Nyong'o.

Billie Eilish and Jesse Rutherford

Billie's rep confirmed her split from singer-songwriter Jesse Rutherford, more than a decade her senior, back in May: "We can confirm Billie and Jesse did split amicably and remain good friends. All cheating rumors are false. Both are currently single." The "Bad Guy" singer later clarified her feelings for her ex on Instagram, telling fans he's her "homie forever."

Halsey and Alev Aydin

Megan Fox and Machine Gun Kelly

Megan Fox and Machine Gun Kelly

After spending 2022 making out on every red carpet known to man, Megan Fox and Machine Gun Kelly spent basically all of 2023 breaking up, getting back together, and talking about it everywhere. From Megan removing the purposefully painful engagement ring (when describing the band to Vogue, MGK said, "The bands are actually thorns. So if she tries to take it off, it hurts…Love is pain!”) to putting out a book of poetry appropriately titled Pretty Boys Are Poisonous, the pair made messy headlines all year.

Jeannie Mai Jenkins and Jeezy

After just two years of marriage, Jeezy filed for divorce from The Real host Jeannie Mai Jenkins. He released a statement to E! News in October, stating: "The decision to end this chapter in my life was not made impulsively and comes with a heavy heart. Despite this, my love and respect for Jeannie remains and the time we spent together holds a cherished place in my heart." Jenkins took to Instagram to voice her feelings: "Sometimes you need to take a break and disconnect, to heal."

Ariana Grande and Dalton Gomez

Ariana Grande and Dalton Gomez

This was one of the messiest celeb breakups we never saw coming. Ariana Grande separated from her husband of 2 years, Dalton Gomez, in July (although documents cite their separation began in January)—around the same time she began publicly dating her Wicked costar, Ethan Slater. He then filed for divorce from his wife of 4 years, Lilly Jay, on July 26th. They share one child together, born in 2022.

Grande and Slater began stepping out together publicly shortly after the messy news broke, and his ex let the world know her side of the story. She told Page Six, “[Ariana’s] the story really. Not a girl’s girl. My family is just collateral damage.” Shortly after, news broke that Grande and Dalton had gone on double dates with their spouses before the splits. Talk about messy.

Kylie Jenner and Travis Scott

Kylie Jenner and Travis Scott

Kylie and Travis have broken up and gotten back together more times than we can count, but they called it quits for good (for the foreseeable future, anyway) in January after reportedly spending the holidays apart. And as we all know, Kylie has since moved on to Timothee Chalamet. I wonder what they talk about...

Sophia Bush and Grant Hughes

Sophia Bush and Grant Hughes

Sophia Bush filed for divorce from Grant Hughes in August after 13 months of marriage, and she seems to have remained positive post-split. She spilled the tea about her divorce support group chat on her podcast Drama Queens: "The fact that we have this group chat that is literally giving everybody life. And people are trading recommendations for lawyers, sending each other quotes from phenomenal writers. We have a book club going. We're sending each other really hilarious memes from TikTok. It just got so great." Hughes later filed a response a month later, citing that their separation date actually took place on June 27th.

Taylor Swift and Matty Healy

Taylor Swift and Matty Healy

In a few short weeks all Swifties wish we could wipe from collective memory, Taylor had her long-rumored fling with The 1975's Matty Healy. Thankfully, the clear rebound ended just as quickly as it began, and Swifties got their way (as always).

If a grown man calling himself "Matty" doesn't tell you what kind of dude he is immediately, he also said super gross things about Taylor's bestie, Ice Spice. It just wasn't a good look for our girl; but thankfully, Travis won her over soon after.

Billy Porter and Adam Smith

Billy Porter and Adam Smith

Billy Porter and his partner, Adam Smith, decided to end their 6-year marriage in July. The two met at a dinner party in 2009, broke up briefly in 2010, got back together in 2015, and got married in 2017, just 16 days after getting engaged. The breakup was described as amicable and mutual, with both expressing continued love and support for each other as they move forward.

But then the actor joked in an interview with the U.K.'s Evening Standard, "The whole world knows I’m getting a divorce! Y’all want to talk about my divorce and Ricky Martin's at the same time?"

Kendall Jenner and Bad Bunny

Kendall Jenner and Bad Bunny

A source confirmed to People that the second-youngest KarJenner split from Bad Bunny after spending the majority of the year together, although both parties have stayed mysteriously mum on the matter. All seemed to be well in October, when the rapper performed double duty as host and musical guest at Saturday Night Live; the model even attended the SNL afterparty with him. The month before, they made their front-row debut at Milan Fashion Week.

Teyana Taylor and Iman Shumpert

Teyana Taylor and Iman Shumpert

After multiple attempts to end her marriage to her NBA husband, the singer finally filed in January. Taylor took to Instagram on September 17 to write, "Iman and I are separated and have been for a while. To be 1000% clear, “infidelity” ain’t one of the reasons for our departure. We are still the best of friends, great business partners and are one hell of a team when it comes to co-parenting our 2 beautiful children. Most importantly we are FAMILY & in the 10yrs together, 7yrs married we ain’t ever played with or about THAT."

But the court documents tell a bit of a different story; Taylor reportedly cited Shumpert “treating her cruelly and displaying extreme narcissistic behavior throughout the majority of their marriage" as the reason for the filing.
