7 Creative Family Photo Ideas

Family photo sessions used to mean dressing up in your fanciest outfit, going to a portrait studio, and being placed in traditional poses by a studio photographer. While any family photo is worth treasuring, more families are choosing to capture images of their family in unique and interesting ways. Here are seven creative and inspiring ideas for your next family photograph.

  1. A Photo within a Photo

Photo editing software has come a long way in recent years. You can do everything from changing the color of a photograph to adding text and borders. One particularly captivating effect that can be performed is placing a photo within another photo. This is a great idea for a family with children. The parents can pose holding an empty frame in the larger photo, and a smaller photo of their children can be placed inside of the frame with the photo editing software. Or you can use the same concept to show the progression of time with an older family photo within the frame.

  2. Family Reflection

In this attractive option, a family's reflection is captured in a still body of water, such as a puddle or a small pond. The photographer will typically photograph the family's feet, along with their entire reflection in the body of water. It is a stunning and elegant way to encapsulate a moment in time.

  3. Focus on One Part of the Body

A family photo doesn't always have to include faces. Focus on photographing one part of the body, such as a group shot of your family's hands or feet. This is a beautiful way to capture the love of a family without facial expressions.

  4. Profile Photo

The opposite of the above-mentioned idea, a profile photo displays a myriad of emotions in a simple and classic way. Family members are seated in a slightly staggered position one in front of the other, facing in the same direction. Most often their expressions are soft and serene, not smiling or overly exuberant. A black and white or sepia tone is often added, which enhances the serenity of the image.

  5. Get Back to Nature

Holding your family photo session in the great outdoors is the perfect way to add an attractive backdrop to your photographs. Noteworthy locations include the beach, parks, farms, or botanical gardens.

  6. Take It Indoors

Invite your photographer over to your house. This will offer them the opportunity to take candid photographs of your family in their every day environment. Gather everyone around the kitchen counter to prepare a meal together, splash around in the family pool, or cozy up on the couch and watch your favorite movie. Your photographer will take care of the rest.

  7. Play in the Rain

Most families worry about the weather ruining their outdoor photo session. Instead of rescheduling your session due to the weather, embrace it. Stomp in puddles, taste the raindrops, and don't be afraid to get soaked. You may even be rewarded with a rainbow backdrop after the weather lets up.
