Mother's Day Gifts: 5 Thoughtful DIY Ideas

Your mother has done so much for you, and while you should show your appreciation every day, Mother’s Day is still a great opportunity to shower her in love. Instead of spending oodles of money on gifts that your mom might not want, try making her something special that she can cherish. Here are five DIY gifts your mom is sure to love.

  1. A Gardening Basket
Instead of giving your mother flowers, put together a basket of new gardening tools, garden decor, and some special seeds for her to plant. It’s easy to gather these items together for her and put them in a pretty watercan. It’s not only a functional gift, but can be done at whatever your price point. Try to choose tools, like spades and cute gloves, in colors she likes, and decor that she will enjoy placing in her yard. If you choose to also include a plant or seeds, make sure to pick something that she will enjoy tending. You can make it even more special by offering to spend time planting with her. Note: if your mom doesn’t like to garden this isn’t the right gift to give her.
  2. A Bubble Bath Kit
Does your mom enjoy a long soak in a bubble bath at the end of a long day? If so, you can put together a bubble bath kit that can help her relax and enjoy some quiet time. Find a cute bath caddy that she can use in her bathroom, and fill it with bubble bath, bath salts, candles, and anything else that she would enjoy. You can include a book that she might like if she enjoys reading in the bath, or a relaxing album she can play if she’s more into zenning out. It doesn’t hurt to add a bottle of her favorite wine either.
  3. Mint Lime Foot Soak
Moms are on their feet almost constantly, and that leads to seriously aching feet. Make this a little bit easier on her this year by creating a relaxing, soothing mixture she can soak her feet in. This is an affordable, easy DIY that you can give her as a stand alone present or include in a bubble bath kit. You just need two cups of Epsom salts, one lime, a zester, green food coloring, peppermint essential oil, lime essential oil, and a glass jar. Add the Epsom salt, zest of the lime, 2-3 drops of both essential oils, and 1-2 drops of green food coloring. Mix thoroughly and put into the glass jar. Don’t forget to put a nice ribbon around the jar and include directions for use, such as “Step 1: Lock the Door and Relax.”
  4. Breakfast in Bed
This might not seem like much of a present, but I promise your mom will appreciate it. Wake up early on Mother’s Day to put together a delicious breakfast before your mom wakes up. While she sleeps, whip up her favorite breakfast food, maybe eggs and bacon or french toast, brew her favorite coffee, and arrange everything on a bed-friendly tray. Deliver it to her before she gets out of bed, and tell her to enjoy the luxurious morning. Don’t forget to clean the kitchen once you’re done cooking!
  5. Personalized Coffee Mug
If your mom is a devout coffee drinker then you should absolutely give her a gift that supports that hobby. While she might like a store-bought coffee mug, there’s no doubt that she will love a coffee cup that you made for her. Decorating a mug is actually very easy. Simply get a plain, white cup and some sharpies (oil-based, paint Sharpie markers are best). Decide what you want to put on the mug, draw the design, let it dry for a few hours (or overnight) and then bake the mug for 30 minutes at 350 degrees. Put the mug in the oven before it heats up, and leave it in there until it has completely cooled in order to prevent cracking. Complete the present by grabbing a bag of your moms favorite gourmet coffee.
