Foods for Depression Relief

Food has unfortunately not yet been found to cure depression, but eating certain foods may help ease and prevent some of your symptoms. Eating a healthy diet is the first step in maintaining your body’s health. If you rely on medications alone, you will probably still not regain the same amount of energy you need to feel well throughout the day. It may take a while to see the results of altering your diet, but don’t give up. Your properly-nourished body will reward you with the liveliness you’ve been missing.

Eat Smart

Eat a nutrient-rich diet. This may seem like a no-brainer, but you’d be surprised at how many empty calories you consume on a daily basis. Processed foods do not provide your body with the energy it needs to operate properly and may also expose your brain to dangerous chemicals. Try to prepare most of your food at home, incorporating foods such as fish, nuts, vegetables, and fruits. Foods such as fish and nuts contain lean protein and healthy fats that your body needs to survive. Fruits and vegetables contain enough minerals and vitamins that, if you eat them regularly, you don’t even need to take a supplement.

Don’t Forget Anitoxidants

Load up on antioxidants. Antioxidants are found in all kinds of fresh foods, including fruits, vegetables, nuts, and oils. Antioxidants, such as beta-carotene, vitamin C, and vitamin E fight the damaging molecules in your body called free radicals. Your brain is especially at risk for free radical damage, but these antioxidants have been shown to reduce their harm. Foods that contain beta-carotene include: carrots, broccoli, sweet potato, and spinach. Blueberries, kiwi, oranges, and peppers contain vitamin C, and nuts, seeds, vegetable oil, and margarine contain vitamin E.

Carbs Are Good

Carbohydrates have taken a (mostly undeserved) bad rap when it comes to weight gain, but it is important to eat enough of these, especially if you have depression. Carbs can give you a calming effect because they are linked to the mood-boosting chemical, serotonin. Go for healthier, complex carbs, like whole grains, instead of simple carbs (sugars), like brownies and cookies. Then, carbohydrates will also help maintain your overall health in addition to helping your mood.

Protein Is Important

Protein can also help with alertness. Lean proteins, including chicken and turkey, contain an amino acid called tyrosine. In studies, it has been suggested that tyrosine may help increase levels of the brain chemicals dopamine and norepinephrine, which can make it easier to stay awake and concentrate. Good sources of protein include: lean beef, low-fat cheese, poultry, and beans.
