Mold remediation is an expensive (not to mention gross) process that you will have to undergo if your home has a mold problem. There are some simple steps you can take to prevent mold from growing in your home in the first place, which will make your life significantly easier by avoiding frequent mold inspection and mold removal costs.
Ventilate
Everyday activities such as cooking, showering, and washing dishes can provide the right amount of moisture for mold to grow, so the key is proper ventilation. If you can, vent appliances outside of the home instead of to the attic, such as your stove and dryer. In terms of airing out the rooms themselves, you should occassionally leave the doors and windows open and invest in a fan to increase the airflow.
Fix Problems Immediately
A lot of mold growth stems from leaks, past flooding, or overall dampness. You can prevent this by looking out for water leaks in your home and repairing them as soon as you notice them. If something in your home becomes wet, make sure to clean it and air it out within 24-48 hours. Some small leaks or spills may not seem like a big deal, so it can be tempting to put off fixing them. Resist that temptation, and you will thank yourself later.
Resist Mold
Why wait until you have to schedule a mold removal when you can buy products that prevent mold growth in the first place? There are many products you can purchase that are mold-resistant, including drywall, sheetrock, and mold inhibitors for paint. They’ll probably be a little pricier upfront, but at least you won’t have to keep cleaning or replacing them because of mold.
Start From the Outside
There are several outdoor factors that may be contributing to your mold problem, even if you are vigilant about preventing mold indoors. Rain gutters that are full or damaged can potentially cause your roof to leak, so its a good idea to clean them regularly, especially after storms. Also, keep piles of leaves from collecting on your porch or patio because they provide the perfect environment for mold growth, which may spread to your home.
