Organizing and Keeping Your Laundry Room Clean

Laundry rooms are tailor-made for clutter, but that doesn't mean your laundry room should suffer that fate. By preparing an organized laundry room, you'll be able to keep it tidy and fresh.

Put Up a Bulletin Board

A multi-use trick for laundry room organization is to hang a cork board next to your washer and dryer. You can stick cleaning instructions to it or post inspiring messages or images, but the most useful purpose is for single socks. When a sock has lost its partner, tack it to the bulletin board and wait for the other one to turn up.

Keep a Trash Bin Next to the Dryer

Dryer lint must be removed after each use to prevent a fire hazard, but lint can cause quite a mess. To combat any possible stray lint balls, keep a small trash bin next to the dryer. When you change the lint out, put it immediately in the trash, along with any dryer sheets, giving less opportunity for stray pieces to fall on the way out of the laundry room.

Put a Decorative Bowl on the Washer

Keep a small bowl on top of your washer in case you find anything in the pockets before starting a load. Rather than accrue clutter on top of the washer, keep it all in one place.

Install a Fold-Down Folding Area

The top of the dryer gets lint-covered and dusty fast. A good way to ensure a clean surface for folding is to install a fold-down table on the wall. When you take clothes out of the dryer, fold the clothes on the clean table. When you're done, fold it back up. Less dust and lint will accumulate, requiring less cleaning.

Keep a Caddy for Cleaning Supplies

Along with laundry detergent, fabric softener, and dryer sheets, you may keep other cleaning supplies in your laundry room. This is an easy way to encourage clutter. To prevent that, buy a plastic caddy. The cleaning supplies will never get separated, and the caddy keeps them from tipping over and spilling.

Vacuum or Sweep Frequently

Keep up with basic cleaning. When you vacuum or sweep your laundry room, be sure to also bust out a long-handled duster to get the walls. Laundry rooms accumulate dust like nobody's business. To clean behind the appliances and the vent, use a vacuum attachment. Keeping the room free of dust and lint keeps your clean clothes clean.

Keep Individual Laundry Baskets in Rooms

Make sure each bedroom in the house has its own laundry basket that can easily be transported to the laundry room. This keeps all dirty clothes in their own containers and prevents them from being strewn all over the house and the laundry room. In the laundry room, keep a large basket with three sections for separate loads. By keeping the clothing organized, you'll never end up with clothing on the floor.

Laundry is a sometimes plodding task, but it's almost unbearable with a messy laundry room. Make doing laundry enjoyable by keeping an organized and clean location to do it in.
