5 Tips for Avoiding a Wedding Dress Mess

Your dress can make or break the big day. Sure, you ought to give some attention to your groom's garb, but the honest truth is that it’s all about your wedding gown. Here are five tips for making sure your dress is as fresh and beautiful as it was the first time you fell in love with it!

  1. Avoid Makeup Meltdowns

Whether you’re doing your own makeup or enlisting the help of a professional, the goal is to keep the makeup on your face, not your dress. Use a scarf to cover your face while the dress is moving over your head. If you have a step-in dress, makeup disasters are one less thing to fret about.

  2. Beware the Glow

Fair-skinned women who want a tan on their wedding day should not be using self-tanner the night before; the color could transfer onto their dresses. A light-golden tan that you achieve days before your wedding is a much better plan.

  3. Don't be a Beach Comber

Step away from the ball gown! If you’re going to be married on a beach, the last thing you want is a full wedding dress or lace gown that could trap sand and beach debris. Think chiffon or a similar light and floaty kind of fabric to avoid looking like a kelp-covered sea monster.

  4. Prepare Your Hair

For pull-down dresses, affix a large plastic bag over your head to save your hairdo. Need to touch up your hair color? Don’t do it the day before the ceremony. Sweat could cause some of the color to run onto your dress.

  5. Consider Sitting Situations

Sitting requires some thought, whether you’re sitting at home or in the car. Lift the back of the dress with help from your maid of honor and then sit yourself down. With the gown fluffed out behind you, you’ll avoid wrinkling.
