Are You Making The Wrong First Impression On Your Profile?

Everyone knows that you never get a second chance to make a first impression, so how do you make sure that your profile is putting its best foot forward? After all, when you're dating online, your profile is pretty much your romantic resume.

Don't Be a Downer

So you've had your share of bad dates, or bad relationships, or even bad marriages. Your dating profile is not the place to air that dirty laundry. Yes, you should be honest, but you should keep the overall message positive. Don't harp about how obnoxious your ex was. That isn't helpful to anyone, and it makes you seem negative and cynical. Try to focus on the positive aspects of dating and face each trial with a smile.

But Don't Be Too Eager

Nothing is more of a turn off than someone who is desperate. People can smell desperation on a profile a mile away, and it will scare off plenty of potential matches. Stop looking for Mr. or Mrs. Right, and let it happen organically. Going on a date with someone doesn't have to end in marriage so try to remember that when you're filling out your profile information. You're here to have fun and meet new people. If one of those people end up being "the one," then fabulous! Just don't force it.

Proofread...Then Proofread Again

Like a resume, your profile needs to be free of grammar and spelling mistakes. Most people find a profile full of grammatical errors a turnoff. The general impression is that you are either lazy or uneducated, which doesn't make for a good first impression. Take the time to read your profile once you've filled it out to make sure you aren't making this simple mistake. It's an easy fix that could draw quite a bit more attention to your dating profile.

Be Concise

It can be very tempting to write your entire life story and history on your profile, but try to stay away from using your profile as your diary. Make things interesting, but brief. Online dating is fun because it's quick and easy, so leave your background and long childhood stories for the third or fourth date instead. Don't list every single band, television show, song, movie, and book you once enjoyed. Your profile needs to draw them in with charm, but leave them hanging and waiting for more.
