100 Years of Fashion and Makeup Trends. Makeup and fashion change a lot, and that’s something that everyone knows. Nowadays, we have major fashion shows twice a year, and trends come and go so quickly that it’s challenging to keep up. Over a single decade, that can really add up. Surprisingly enough, it wasn’t always like that. Fashion and makeup didn’t reign supreme for a while.
At the beginning of the 20th century, fashion and makeup were pretty unimaginative. Women wore outfits that were considered conservative—or at least, they’re considered really conservative now. Makeup, on the other hand, was super taboo. During the 1900s, makeup was only for “women of the night.” So, any “respectable” woman wouldn’t be seen with rouge on her cheeks.
American fashion, in particular, is fascinating because it goes with history. We’re a young country, but we’ve had a lot of things occur since we established ourselves in 1776. Overall, that’s had a huge impact on what we wear and put on our faces. Today, we’re going to go over all of that.
How did we go from stuffing our bodies into corsets to wearing loose blouses and skinny jeans? Well, we’re about to tell you. We’ll also touch on makeup since it and fashion go hand-in-hand. Interestingly enough, the 1900s is the start of makeup as we know it today.
