15 Most Controversial Modern Fashion Trends

Harem Pants

Harem Pants

Harem pants had a big moment recently, but not everyone’s a fan of the drop-crotch, baggy pants—particularly since they’ve made their way into office wear this year. They definitely don't belong in the office, but they work great for lounging around the house or a lazy Sunday. The worst part of this trend was how it made women look like they had a full diaper. Furthermore, there's hardly any way you can dress up harem pants to look classy. No matter what, it always looks like you're headed out in your laundry day outfit.

Now, track pants are set to take over the pants world, so harem pants haters can rejoice! It's time to hear about how track pants are the worst trend ever. At least we can say that track pants look much more comfortable than their previous harem pant counterpart.

Culottes

Culottes

Fashion bloggers were hooked on culottes for a while, but unfortunately, these modernized gaucho pants don’t look flattering on anyone else’s body type. Here’s to hoping that these baggy pants don’t come back for a second act.

Statement Sleeves

Statement Sleeves

Fall is all about statement sleeves, and while they typically do look very fashionable, they aren’t exactly functional. Can you imagine trying to type on your laptop or eat a sandwich while wearing sleeves that extend half a foot past your fingertips?

"Ugly-Chic" Shoes

"Ugly-Chic" Shoes

“Ugly chic” is the term used to describe high fashion shoes that should be ugly but actually end up looking chic. Some people love this trend because it’s so different from most shoe trends, but you cannot say with a straight face that you would wear a pair of embellished Crocs out in public.

Kitten Heels

Kitten Heels

Kitten heels have always been a source of controversy. Are they flats? Are they heels? They need to decide. This trend may actually stick around though, as more and more women are ditching the sky-high heels in favor of something a little more comfortable.

Corsets

Corsets

Fashion bloggers have almost single-handedly brought back the corset trend, but many women are against it because it represents a time when women were forced to wear them in order to look thinner. So, chic or archaic? It’s up to you!

Platform Shoes

Platform Shoes

As heels faded out of fashion fads, platform shoes made their way in. To some people, wearing platform sneakers is a great new way to add a little height, but to many people, the shoes look like something only a Bratz doll would wear.

Sweatpants

Sweatpants

Apparently, it's become completely appropriate to wear sweatpants out in public, and while many millennials have embraced the trend, many others think that sweatpants are just bit too casual to wear outside the house. No matter how you feel, this trend isn’t likely to go away anytime soon.

Cropped Flares

Cropped Flares

Cropped flares became a must-have denim cut, but not everyone was sold by this ankle-baring cut. This trend isn’t super flattering unless you are tall and slim, so it’s no wonder that we only saw this style on supermodels and bloggers.

Chokers

Chokers

For the most part, everyone has been loving the chokers that have come with the 90s resurgence, and we did for a while too! Yet, the choker trend goes too far sometimes, when you end up with something that looks like a clunky neck brace.

White Ankle Boots

White Ankle Boots

White tennis shoes were huge recently, so then people started turning to a new white shoe: the ankle boot. Many fashionistas were surprised to see this color boot paired with traditional fall colors, and the jury’s still out on whether or not this is actually chic.

Pajama Attire

Pajama Attire

Pajama-inspired button-downs and pants are cropping up everywhere, and some people are thrilled they can roll out of bed and go to brunch. Yet, others are irritated that the casual wear trend has gone too far.

Embellished Denim

Embellished Denim

There have been many a denim trend, and one of the most intriguing ones is embellished denim—like jeans with embroidery, beadwork, and patches. In the right context, these can look high-end, but most of the time they look questionable.

Bralettes

Bralettes

This has been the era of the bralette, as more women are embracing comfort over padded, underwired bras. Many young women love no longer having to conceal their bra straps, but other people think it’s inappropriate to show off undergarments as a fashion accessory.

Colored Faux Fur

Colored Faux Fur

Faux fur coats and accessories are huge, and while it’s easy to love the white, gray, and brown ones, it’s a little more difficult to pull off a pink faux fur vest or a green faux fur coat. While unique, they look just a little too fake to have much staying power.
