35 Fashion and Beauty Trends We Shouldn't Bring into 2023

Loose-Fitting Denim

Loose-Fitting Denim

Loose-fitting denim is was becoming a trend quickly in 2022 and sure it was great for a while to loosen up during COVID but there is certainly nothing flattering about loose-fitting denim. When it comes to denim, you want something form-fitting, not some weird put-together look like you just hunted a giant denim bear and made him into some pants and jacket.

Instead opt for some slimmer jeans. They don’t have to be skin-tight, but they should flatter your figure. As people start to lose their COVID weight gains, the loose denim look isn’t doing anyone any favors. It just looks like you are wearing clothes that are too big for you.

Rainbow Hair

Rainbow Hair

Rainbow hair was a trend that has been emerging the past couple of years, but unless you want to look like a cartoon character, this is a trend you should ditch fast. Rainbow hair goes good with next to nothing in terms of fashion unless you exclusively shop at Hot Topic.

It’s not exactly cheap nor good for your hair to be dying it multiple bright colors. On top of this, the look really only looks good for a short while, because your hair grows out and the color washes out. Don’t be indecisive. The red, the orange, the yellow, the green, the blue, the violet – just pick a color!

Y2K Nostalgia

Y2K Nostalgia

Y2K Nostalgia – from butterfly clips to super tiny bags, from metallic jackets to low-rise jeans – these are the fashion items that defined an era. While these may have been awesome back then, the re-emergence of these collars in 2022 was a nightmare for all of those who never wanted to relive the early 2000s again.

But alas these fashion trend became a thing again and now it’s time to put them back to bed. You aren’t a teenage girl anymore, so dressing like a teen idol from 20 years ago isn’t going to be the most flattering look for you. Let your kids dress how they will, but don’t walk around like you are living in a yearbook.why crimping was supposed to stay in the ‘80s.

Giant Bags

Giant Bags

Giant bags are literally the worst. They take up too much space as you carry them on your shoulder, and you tend to put too much in them, so they become heavy. They were super popular in the last couple of years, but it makes zero sense. They cause all sorts of back and shoulder pain, and there's no reason to carry that much stuff.

No one ever needs to carry that much stuff. It's time to cut back on the stuff and only carry what we need on a day-to-day basis. If you don't use it in a month, take it out of your purse. You are just going shopping, not going on a pilgrimage.

Baby Bangs

Baby Bangs

One of the last year’s biggest hair trends was ‘baby bangs.’ These blunt, cropped bangs are significantly shorter than the long, layered bangs we’ve grown so accustomed to. What is so odd about this haircut is how effortlessly it makes your forehead look bigger, and who out there is actually looking to have a giant forehead?

Although many celebs debuted baby bangs this past season, let’s not look to them for inspo. This hairstyle will leave friends and family wondering if your micro bangs were intentional...or the result of a haircut gone awry. Let's not encourage anyone else to get this look by sporting it ourselves. Let's just let it die.

Velour Tracksuits

Velour Tracksuits

How could we ever forget the infamous velour tracksuit? Juicy Couture’s two-piece ensemble was offered in a variety of colors and patterns during the early 2000s. Celebs like Paris Hilton, Britney Spears, and Kim Kardashian iconized this trend. Not only was it comfortable, but it was considered fashionable. After a decline in style, the velour tracksuit resurged back in 2018.

New prints and fits were introduced. And new brands adopted the re-emerging trend. But this fashion statement has had its moment. You don’t need to own a tracksuit to follow the athleisure trend. Leave them behind this year! Try a stylish and comfortable romper instead - you'll thank us later.

Patchwork Jeans

Patchwork Jeans

Late in the year, patchwork jeans got super popular. What is this, the '90s? As wide-leg jeans come back, patchwork is heading right out the window.  Since holes in the jeans are still very much a thing, patchwork seems super unnecessary. And if you don't like the holes, replace the jeans.

This goes double for distressed jeans that use patches. That doesn't fix them. They look just as bad, but now with a little more color. Not to mention the fact that purchasing a much of patches for some holes in your jeans is going to cost you a lot of money - more money than to just buy new jeans.

Leopard Print

Leopard Print

Animal print—especially leopard—has had its five minutes of fame. It’s come in and out of style multiple times throughout this decade and it’s time to retire it for good in 2023. of course, other fashion aficionados will disagree and tell you animal print is in but they are the ones keeping it alive.

With street style no longer resembling a safari, you can get wild with your wardrobe. Swap leopard print for plaid this winter, and plaid for pastels this spring. Not every day needs to be a live-action version of the Lion King. Some looks are better left in the stone age - quite literally, in fact.

Chokers

Chokers

In 2016, chokers were resurrected. Celebrities’ influence on this fashion revival was evident. Once they were seen on the necks of celebs, women everywhere followed suit. Whether you preferred minimal, dainty chokers, or bold, statement-making chokers, this necklace has had its moment. And now it's time to let that moment pass.

As we transition to spring of 2023, trade your chokers for long, layered necklaces or chunky chain-length jewelry. These accessories will feel fresh and fun as we enter a new decade. It's a new year, and we aren't on COVID lockdown like we were before, so let's let loose and enjoy the freedom of some flowy jewelry.

Contouring

Contouring

When Kim Kardashian posted a photo of herself on Twitter—pre and post-contour—she had no idea she was revolutionizing a makeup phenomenon. Millions of women decided to purchase a new set of brushes, a jar of foundation, a dewy highlighter, and a matte bronzer ASAP. But the look is no good.

Even though this happened in 2012, women are still contouring—and it’s 2023. Not only is it an expensive habit, but it’s also an extremely time-consuming process. My advice is to leave contouring in this decade. It’s time we embrace our natural, healthy, and glowing skin. Why would you want fake contours to look undernourished?

Kylie Jenner Lips

Kylie Jenner Lips

In 2015, women became infatuated with the Kylie Jenner Lip Challenge. This social media challenge encouraged teenagers to use suction bottles to temporarily plump their lips—but many lips were harmed in the process. Not only was this trend against medical advice and reason, but it was also a fad that just wasn't worth it.

Yes, a perfect pout is desirable. And yes, artificially plumped lips may still be all the rage, but there are safer ways to achieve this look. If you’re still using lip suction, stop. Getting a bit imaginative with your lip color and choosing the right color for your face can make your lips look fuller without having to alter your body.

Checkerboard Print

Checkerboard Print

Checkerboard print was emerging in the last couple of years, which we can likely give some credit to the Queen’s Gambit for happening. Checkered patterns on clothing were once a thing, but here, in the now, they always look out of place, no matter how many are wearing the look. Say no to checkered patterns in 2023.

For 2023, search for some more modern prints and patters. Avoid overly bright colors and bold patterns or you are going to look like you jumped out of a ‘90s after school special. The checkered look simply doesn’t work these days and walking around like a chess board isn’t going to make you look any better.

Shellac Nailpolish

Shellac Nailpolish

How stiletto nails ever became popular is certainly beyond me and all I can say is the sooner they are gone the better. Whether the goal is to look like Nosferatu or a fiercely independent woman, this fashion trend is absolutely terrifying but not in a good way. And there is really nothing practical about it either.

Picking things up, wiping your you-know-what, eating, or whatever else is exceedingly difficult with these nails, in trying to keep them on and also in trying to prevent yourself from becoming injured. One misstep when you are scratching your eye and you’ll be starting a new trend: eyepatches.

Fanny Packs

Fanny Packs

Fanny packs may be functional, but this trend has seen its better day. Since the ‘80s, fanny packs have evolved significantly. Instead of your dad wearing them during your family vacation, they’re being worn by celebrities like Kendall Jenner and Bella Hadid. Of course, the fanny packs they have now don't quite look like the ones from 40 years ago.

I’ll admit that fanny packs are convenient, but they aren’t cute. And as if they aren’t bad enough, bloggers and social media influencers have started wearing these quirky accessories as crossbody bags. The year 2023 is the ideal time to put an end to this madness. You can dress up a fanny pack as elaborate as you want but it's still going to be a fanny pack at the end of the day.

Cateye Glasses

Cateye Glasses

Cateye glasses had been trending and its about time for those to go away too. It’s almost impossible to look professional in a pair and unless you are Lisa Loeb, you really have no business wearing them. And if you are telling yourself that you look good in them, we’ll I’d say you are only hearing what you want to.

There’s a time to look like Catwoman and that’s Halloween. The other days of the year, your glasses nor your sunglasses need to overwhelm your face. If you were really a superhero, you’d have 20/20 vision but alas, this is where we are. And really a lot of people don’t have the right facial frame to even pull the look off.

Too Much Eyeliner

Too Much Eyeliner

Will we ever learn? It’s doubtful. When it comes to eyeliner, it's easy to overdo it. Eyeliner is tricky—and I’ll be the first to second that statement. Eyeliner should be sleek, steady, and smooth. But there are days when your lines are jagged and uneven, and when you apply way too much liner to your lower lid.

Although your eyeliner may never be perfect, there are tips and tricks that can help you avoid midday smudging and over-application. By wearing less eyeliner, or a lighter shade of liner, you can perfect your eyes with minimal risk of beauty blunders. It’s the perfect New Year’s resolution! Go minimalist with your eyeliner in 2023.

Chevron

Chevron

For an entire year of this decade, the chevron-patterned fabric was unstoppable. The print was extremely popular during the ‘70s and made a celebrated comeback during the 2010s. Dresses, blouses, skirts, leggings, tights, and accessories were covered in this geometric pattern. It's a very harsh pattern and becomes dated fast. And we have to say in 2023, it's reached that point once again.

How much chevron can one person own? The limit does exist. But all good things must come to an end because we are all sick of this pattern. If you still have chevron-print anything in your closet, it’s time to do away with it. Let’s hope it doesn’t make another appearance in the next decade.

Wedge Sneakers

Wedge Sneakers

Wedge sneakers first made an appearance in 2012—and thus the most controversial shoe was born. Some loved the combination of comfort and style, while others were completely opposed to the shoe’s agenda. Somewhere between a boot and a sneaker, these shoes were incredibly strange when you think about it and incredibly grotesque.

It’s been more than eight years and this style of sneaker is still prevalent. My advice? Wear sneakers or wear wedges, but please don’t wear them both at once. They really are hideous and they are best left to be remnants of the past. Let's not punish our feet for a sentimental fashion trend and just admit you were wrong for liking it in the first place.

Indoor Tanning

Indoor Tanning

Over the last decade, many health professionals have shared the dangers of indoor tanning. Contrary to popular belief, tanning beds are not a safe alternative to sunlight. They too increase the risk for skin cancer. If you are going to be exposed to UV rays at all, don't try to make it happen on purpose and always wear sunscreen.

Although tanning bed usage has declined, there are still millions of Americans who continue to tan indoors—despite the warnings and cautionary tales. The worst part of this look is that it never looks natural on anyone. If you want to look like an orange alien, by all means, go for this look but if you prefer being a human, go for a natural look.

Wet Hair Look

Wet Hair Look

For the last five years, the ‘wet hair look’ has been a trend to follow. Celebrities and models have made many red-carpet and runway appearances with hair that looks to be sopping wet. What really set this trend back in motion was when Zendaya wore it at the premiere of Spider-Man: No Way Home. But in reality, this hairstyle requires much more than water.

If you don’t mind using a heaping amount of hair product to achieve this look, be my guest. Your hair will undoubtedly feel heavier than if you actually just wet your hair. But this trend is anything but realistic. Instead, opt for styling your hair while it’s dry. There are so many things you can do with a dry look.

Waist Trainers

Waist Trainers

The waist-trainer trend is nothing short of torturous. By wearing high-compression shaping garments, you literally train your waist to develop an hourglass shape. Not only is this body type unrealistic, but the act of waist training can also be detrimental to both your physical and mental health. You are basically crushing your organs.

Waist trainers and corsets put added pressure on the abdomen, which can cause unwanted side effects. Your digestive system is put in jeopardy and you are prone to a number of abdominal problems, including the potential pain it will undoubtedly bring as you try to remold your body. In 2023, let’s just keep our waists slim by working out and eating right!

Pajamas

Pajamas

At some point during 2020, when COVID lockdowns were happening, and people didn’t have to go to work and went out seldomly, they stopped caring about fashion and it was perfectly acceptable to just be comfortable. So yeah, some of us wore our pajamas outside of the house and it was great, but…

All good things must come to an end. And since we are now allowed outside of our homes, integrating back into society, we have to dress like normal people again. There’s a point where you have worn pajamas so often that you get too comfortable in them and wearing other clothes feels like wearing someone else’s skin. To retain fashion for future generations, get out of depression and be yourself again, it’s time to start wearing real clothes.

Super Short Shorts

Super Short Shorts

There may be such a thing as shorts that are too short, no matter how hot it may be outside. There may be shorts that provide almost no protection from the sun and shorts that frankly expose areas that maybe not everyone wants to see. Super short-shorts can sometimes just look like denim underwear.

And if your shirt is long enough, it may not look like you are wearing pants at all. We are talking about the shorts that are so short, you can actually some butt hanging out. With that said, this is a trend that really needs to go. A bikini shouldn’t be offering more coverage than a pair of shorts or they aren’t really shorts.

Crocs

Crocs

Over the last year, shares of Crocs have increased by 67%. Teenagers are the ones driving this trend. Many teens have said they know Crocs are ugly, but they wear them anyway because they’re “popular.” But even if they are wearing them ironically, it needs to stop. There are too many good shoes out there to give into the ugliest ones of all.

If anyone brings their Crocs into 2023, I will scream. Don’t even get me started on the fur-lined Crocs. It was bad enough that they could be worn in the summer, but now they can be worn in the cooler months as well. Unless you are operating a boat where your feet will be exposed to water often, there's no reason you need these shoes. They have practical applications, sure, but they are far from fashionable.

Cloth Masks

Cloth Masks

Cloth masks seemed necessary when we were in lockdown, because wherever you went, inside or outside, it was being mandated that you were a mask. And obviously, if you are going to walk around all the time in a mask, you not only want to be comfortable, you want to look good too.

That being said, there are much fewer restrictions being placed now so the need for these cloth masks is out. If you are in a building or establishment that requires a mask, it's time to think more practically. Get some real disposable masks that do a much better job of keeping people safe.

Sunglasses After Dark

Sunglasses After Dark

Corey Hart may have had a musical smash hit with “Sunglasses at Night,” but it’s not a cute look in the real world! We’re not sure what got people turned on to the idea of wearing shades in low light or indoors, but it doesn’t make you look mysterious—it just makes you look like a tool.

Plus, wearing sunglasses in the dark can pose some serious safety hazards, whether you’re walking or driving. All in all, this is one hot look from the last year that we just don’t get. Let’s leave the sunglasses after sunset back in 2022 and never think about them again!

"Coastal Grandmother"

"Coastal Grandmother"

Every year we get exposed to some of the most ridiculous fashion trends with the most ridiculous names, and 2022 was no exception. Around the middle of the year, style “experts” started talking about the “coastal grandmother” fashion phenomenon. After only existing for about five minutes, it seemed like you couldn’t escape this ridiculous fad.

Probably the most hilarious thing about this ridiculous fad is how no one can seem to give a straight answer about what makes an outfit “coastal grandmother.” It’s vaguely oceanic and matronly, but it’s also 100% dumb. There’s no need to bring this trend into 2023—we’re sure to have plenty more ridiculous fashion trends pop up in the coming days!

Low-Rise Jeans

Low-Rise Jeans

Low-rise jeans have waxed and waned in popularity over the course of decades, but one thing has remained true through all those years—they always look trashy. For whatever reason, fashionistas thought that 2022 was the year to bring back low-rise jeans, and we are all worse off for it.

The biggest struggle with low-rise jeans is that there’s simply no way to pull them off without looking like trash—the whole point of them is to show off ridiculous amounts of skin, after all. There’s no need to go 100% high-waisted this year, but definitely leave the low-rise jeans in the closet for 2023.

Platform Flip-Flops

Platform Flip-Flops

Kids these days aren’t old enough to remember the fashion mistakes of the ‘90s, so now we’ve got a whole new generation of fashion addicts repeating the sins of their ancestors. One of the most disturbing fashion comebacks we’ve seen recently is the rise in the popularity of platform sandals.

You don’t need a Ph.D. in fashion to understand why these things are awful—two working eyeballs will do just fine. Everyone wants to be a little taller, but growing six inches by slipping on a pair of flip-flops is not the way to do it. Let’s all keep our feet on solid ground when it comes to fashion in 2023.

Resin Jewelry

Resin Jewelry

Making resin jewelry and accessories really took off as a craft during the pandemic, and it, unfortunately, looks like it’s become an epidemic among people who think they know fashion. We’re all for going the DIY route, but only if that route leads to a finished product that doesn’t look like it was made by a five-year-old.

In addition to the unrefined, homemade look of these jewelry pieces, actually creating them yourself can be hazardous to you. When in liquid form, the resin used for this jewelry lets off fumes that are toxic if inhaled. Let’s keep our lungs and ring fingers happy this year and ditch the resin jewelry!

(Image via Instagram)

Tiny Sunglasses

Tiny Sunglasses

It’s wrong to judge people based on their looks…unless tiny sunglasses are involved. Having sunglasses that are comically small for the size of your eyes is definitely attention-getting, but it’s probably not the kind of attention you’re looking for. But that’s not enough to stop this ridiculous trend that made a resurgence in 2022.

Let’s all make a New Year’s Resolution that 2023 is the year when we finally master the art of sunglasses. For the next 12 months, we vow that all our sunglasses will be an appropriate size and that we won’t be wearing them at night!

(Image via Instagram)

Chunky Yarn Sweaters

Chunky Yarn Sweaters

Some of the worst clothing crimes are perpetrated on allegedly “high-fashion” runways, and this trend is no exception. In the last few years, we’ve seen an influx of designers who seem to all be competing to make the ugliest and most-unwearable sweaters and cardigans ever. Normally this is done using comically large yarn in ridiculous, clashing colors.

It would be one thing if these were being made by home knitters who were just proud to show off their work, but these eyesores are being sold for thousands of dollars by fashion designers who should know better. Don’t waste your money on these things because, hopefully, they’ll be old news very soon.

(Image via Instagram)

Laminated Eyebrows

Laminated Eyebrows

It seems like humans have no shortage of ways to make their eyebrows look ridiculous, and we got the resurgence of one of these “fun” trends in 2022. The goal of laminated eyebrows is to give them a smooth appearance and a shiny sheen. However, they often just end up looking strangely wet.

When done correctly, laminated brows can actually be a good look. But when you consider how popular they’ve become, it’s clear these are overdone at this point. It’s time to put them in the fashion vault and bring them out again in another 20 years!

(Image via Instagram)

Bright, Neon Colors

Bright, Neon Colors

There’s nothing with a little pop of color in your outfit, but when you’re wearing is just one big, bright headache, you’ve officially gone overboard with the neon. For whatever reason, 2022 was the year of wearing neon colors that are so bright they can be seen from outer space.

There’s no need to retire your neon pieces for good, but give some thought to how you’re wearing them in 2023. You’re not a peacock during mating season—you don’t always have to be the center of attention in every room! Give them a pop of color, but leave them wanting more.

(Image via Instagram)

Too Much Fringe

Too Much Fringe

Sometimes it was hard to tell whether it was 2022 or 1896 with all the fringe flying around. While normally the purview of cowboys and costume makers, fringe had a big moment last year. It was fun while it lasted, but we think this is one trend that should be leaving soon.

Fringe is definitely eye-catching…to the point where it can become distracting. Any small movement and you’ve let loose a cascade of swinging fabric that you just can’t ignore. A little fringe now and then is perfectly fine, but we’re ready for it to give up the spotlight to a new fashion trend.
