30 Fashion Trends to Ditch in 2024 (and What to Wear Instead)

Do you already have your resolutions in order? We know we already have one in mind: it's time to ditch the fashion duds in our closet! And don't lie—your wardrobe could use some freshening up as we move into the new year, too.

The beginning of the year is such an important time in the fashion industry because designers are beginning to weed out what’s popular and what’s not. At the same time, department stores and clothing shops use what designers do to inspire their own pieces. Things are currently releasing, but you know what that means—out with the old and in with the new! As new colors and designs become popular again, the old stuff becomes passé. That means it’s time to push them to the back of the closet and wait for them to become popular again. After all, we all know that fashion is cyclical.

Since new fashion is making a storm, we’ve created a list of things that we have to ditch for 2024. Some of these are pretty great, so it’s sad to see them go, but it’s important to remember something awesome will replace them. Also, if you love something that’s on this list, no worries! It would be best if you wore what makes you happy. If you love chokers, rock them! Nothing is more fashionable than being happy with yourself

DITCH: Oversized Clothing

DITCH: Oversized Clothing

First and foremost, it's time to say goodbye to the oversized clothing trend. While it may have been cozy and comfortable, it's time to trade in those baggy clothes for a more fitted and figure-flattering look. Trust me, there's nothing sexier than showing off your curves! So ditch those baggy sweatshirts and opt for a sleek, fitted top that will hug your body in all the right places.

When we say "oversized," we don't necessarily mean loose-fitting. You just don't want your shirt or blazer to hang on your shoulders like a wire hanger. Instead, aim for something that says "comfy" but not "frumpy." Stylists say it's time to be aware of the space you're living in! It's entirely possible to wear stylish loose-fitting clothing while also looking put-together.

WEAR INSTEAD: Tailored Garments

WEAR INSTEAD: Tailored Garments

The time has come for us to speak frankly: we're sick of seeing people dressed in baggy clothes. We're over it. That's why tailored clothing is becoming super popular. You could give tailoring a feminine spin on your new outfit, so here are some suggestions for how to incorporate it into your next look.

Remember, when we say to ditch baggy garments, we mean to stop wearing them literally every day. A well-fitted blazer or pair of pants can instantly elevate your look and give you that polished, put-together vibe. Plus, with so many amazing fabrics and styles to choose from, you'll still be able to achieve that comfort factor without sacrificing style.

DITCH: Puffy Jackets

DITCH: Puffy Jackets

Remember when we said this year is all about a smooth silhouette? You can’t get much clunkier than puffy jackets. Don’t grab a jacket that makes your arms stick out cartoonishly, like this one that has a little more padding. There are going to be tons of options on the market, so try to avoid these at all costs.

Plus, as things get colder — and this year is sure to be a super cold one — these jackets provide a bit too much warmth. While this is great for the colder northern climates, it’ll be waaay too much for the southern climates when the weather goes from 80 degrees to 24 in the blink of an eye!

WEAR INSTEAD: Leather Jackets

WEAR INSTEAD: Leather Jackets

Leather jackets are definitely versatile for casual wear, and that's what we love most about them. We're so glad they are back in style. It's time to choose something a little simpler for your wardrobe—including your jacket. Maybe roll with a solid color leather jacket that goes with most outfits compared to a puffy (almost tacky) jacket.

Leather jackets look good with some jeans and a simple white t-shirt, or really anything. Of course, don't get rid of the jacket you own just to invest in leather. We can see jacket trends changing in the next couple of years at most, so be ready for when it circles back.

DITCH: Sheer Clothing

DITCH: Sheer Clothing

No matter how rocking that bod may be, 99% of the population has no desire to see what you look like in underwear...at least we're hoping there's underwear under those clothes. Save the risque stuff for someone who will actually appreciate your wild side in a way it deserves to be respected.

A bit of modesty here goes a long way and leaves everybody guessing. Make intrigue your friend. While a little bit of sheer clothing (like in the sleeves) is still a little stylish, if you can see through 30% of the outfit, it's a little too much. Plus, sheer clothing doesn't exactly offer any warmth. No one wants to be cold for the sake of fashion.

WEAR INSTEAD: Opaque Outfits

WEAR INSTEAD: Opaque Outfits

We fully support transparency in relationships but not in wardrobes. That’s why this is the year we retire our sheer clothing pieces and opt for outfits that are opaque! Keeping everything covered is more professional, especially if you’re old enough to have a full-time job. Most bosses aren't okay with you coming in while wearing super-sheer clothing

A more professional look like this will demand the respect you deserve. Besides, I'm sure you'll feel less exposed, and your friends and coworkers will thank you. Not to mention, you won't have to worry about freezing in the office. What's with all of our offices having the temperature of the tundra?

DITCH: Ruffled/Tiered Clothing

DITCH: Ruffled/Tiered Clothing

Tiered and ruffled clothing is officially out. We're suspecting ruffled clothing to come back pretty quickly, but tiered is singing its Swan Song for a while. This style definitely had its day in the sun, but when it comes to current fashion, this look has fallen down to the lowest tier

The problem with ruffled and tiered clothing is that it has a habit of making women look almost immature, especially when you wear something with a lot of colors. Since color is a major trend this year, it can be hard to pull it off. For now, let's wear something that has one distinct shape

WEAR INSTEAD: Bold Shoulders

WEAR INSTEAD: Bold Shoulders

Last year, all we needed was a good, bold shoulder, and guess what? That trend is still with us! The only difference is that super pointy shoulders are no longer as big as they were last year. Remember those '80s power suits with the shoulder pads? They're still the "in" thing to wear.

It's all about accentuating your shape and creating a larger silhouette. We've said it before, and we'll say it again: take up the space you deserve in the world! Wear your bold shoulder pads proudly. This goes double for blazers, of course. They're the hot-ticket item this year.

DITCH: Oversized Puffy Sleeves

DITCH: Oversized Puffy Sleeves

The days of wearing puffy, baggy sleeves are over. Not only do they make you look like a balloon, but they also create an exaggerated female silhouette. Princess Diana's 1981 wedding to Prince Charles, in which she wore a gown with puffy sleeves, is widely seen as the catalyst for this fashion trend.Nothing draws unwanted attention to your body like some popping plumage on either side.

Plus, you'll feel as if you're taking up a bit too much room.  We see this one returning in a while as "Regencycore" grows larger. Regencycore is basically Bridgerton meets modern fashion. For now, find a style that will give you that feminine touch without overwhelming your frame.

WEAR INSTEAD: Tassels

WEAR INSTEAD: Tassels

One trend that has taken the fashion world by storm is the use of tassels! Tassels are a great way to add texture and movement to an outfit. Try a tassel-trimmed top or dress. You can also add tassels to your accessories, such as earrings or a necklace, to add a pop of color and texture to your outfit. Tassels are a versatile trend that can be dressed up or down, making them perfect for any occasion.

There was a wide range of fringing on the runways this season, from the dramatic complete fringing at PatBo and Bronx & Banco to the softer, more laid-back versions at designers like Proenza Schouler and Ulla Johnson. While tassel accents are commonly associated with boho/western style, this fun aesthetic is more in line with design trends for 2023. The trend looked best on evening gowns.

DITCH: Oversized Cat-Eye Frames

DITCH: Oversized Cat-Eye Frames

Sunglasses aren't cheap, so we're not going to tell you to toss out your current ones. The oversized cat-eye frame will come back; it's just a matter of time. For now, just don't wear them. The problem with oversized shades, in general, is that they scream "Karen." That's the last thing you want.

They're also very early 2010s, so they won't come back for a few years at least. For now, we're going with slim sunglasses. The last thing any one of us wants to communicate with our accessories is RBF — resting B. face. Don't be afraid to wear some sunglasses with personality!

WEAR INSTEAD: Slim Sunglasses

WEAR INSTEAD: Slim Sunglasses

Sure, the point of sunglasses is to block the sun, but you don't have to do that in a boring way. Aviators and huge sunglasses are so last year. Now, we're moving on to something that's stylish and very, very nostalgic. As fashion moves closer to the '90s, slim sunglasses have a chance to shine again.

This also lets your face show a little more (and the weight won't mess up your makeup). Overall slim sunglasses are a win/win. There are so many new styles on the market, too. Some are inspired by the sunglasses we love, while others are a blast from the past. Let your personality sit right on your face!

DITCH: Tie-Dye

DITCH: Tie-Dye

It's time to ditch the tie-dye! We know, we know, it was fun while it lasted, but let's face it, tie-dye is starting to feel like that ex who just won't stop texting you. You want to move on, but they keep creeping back into your life. Well, it's time to cut the cord and say goodbye to the tie-dye trend.

We get it, tie-dye was a cute way to add some color to your wardrobe, but let's be real, it's not the most versatile trend out there. This year, it's all about embracing classic silhouettes and elevated basics. Think Audrey Hepburn meets Billie Eilish, a timeless yet edgy vibe that you can wear anywhere. So, let's give tie-dye the boot and make room for some new fashion flames.

WEAR INSTEAD: Lace Accents and Laser Cutting

WEAR INSTEAD: Lace Accents and Laser Cutting

Lace is back in style with a new twist! We barely dipped our toe in this trend before it had bopped out of style before. Since lace is typically made of a lighter fabric and features delicate cutouts, it is best suited for the warmer months. This mix of luxurious lace and precise laser cutting honors workmanship at a time when there has been a growing preference for artisanal details alongside modern technologies.

We recalled the frills fondly, and now, lace accents are coming back into style. The soft silky feel is for everyone! We suspect that this one will likely stick around for the next year or two. While lace will clearly be the starting point of 2023's fashion trends, designers took different approaches to the look. Naeem Khan, for example, presented a dramatic cape combination, while Proenza Schouler and Bibhu Mohapatra showcased more wearable blouse variants.

DITCH: Windbreakers

DITCH: Windbreakers

We aren’t sure when the windbreaker came in style, but they’re already disappearing. So pour one out for the most obnoxiously noisy fashion trend of all time. The look of these light jackets may be cool, but where's the practicality? Spoiler alert: there isn't any practicality.

Windbreakers were big when the whole "dad" fashion came back, and it was something we honestly didn't like. It made everyone look like their dads looking through the power tool section at Home Depot (or standing outside of a traffic jam to see what's going on). Let's finally leave these fashion choices to our pops, yeah?

Marc Piasecki/GC Images/Getty Images; Gotham/GC Images/Getty Images

WEAR INSTEAD: Trench Coats

WEAR INSTEAD: Trench Coats

Let’s be honest—trench coats are way trendier than windbreakers (and always will be). Instead of an unflattering synthetic material, trench coats are made of a heavy, waterproof material. This will keep you warm, dry, and stylish. And the best part is that it’s an androgynous clothing piece. Both men and women can pull it off!

Trench coats can be sleek and sexy or broad and mysterious. You can pull off all kinds of looks in these and protect yourself from the elements all the while. If you want your trench coat to look a little more stylish, you can always get it tailored, too. That way it can accentuate your shape in all the right places.

DITCH: Cold-Shoulder Tops

DITCH: Cold-Shoulder Tops

Cold shoulder tops may have looked fashion-forward 20 years ago, but now they just look desperate. So save your dignity (and your body heat) and try something more fashionable. Plus, we're tired of seeing them all over the place. Nothing is worse than finding a great top, only to discover that they're a cold-shoulder top.

These tops had their time, and department stores have refused to let them go. It's almost as if they have a backroom full of this style, and they can't get rid of it. Put this trend away for good, especially for plus-size fashion. No one wants their shoulders showing.

WEAR INSTEAD: Plunging and Square Necklines

WEAR INSTEAD: Plunging and Square Necklines

Last year, we all bundled up and put our necklines in the sky. Turtlenecks and high ruffled collars were the thing to wear. Not anymore. As the skirts get longer, the necklines begin to plunge. Deep v-necks are coming back and they’re getting more and more sensual every year. Time to soak up that sun!

In addition to deep v-necks, square necklines are also making a return. Right now, they’re going through the wedding market, but we suspect we’ll see square necklines on department store dresses and blouses in no time. While deep v-necks look nice and beautiful, we’re all about that square neckline, personally.

DITCH: Platform Shoes

DITCH: Platform Shoes

Ah, platform shoes! How our ankles didn’t miss you! We sincerely hope you haven’t missed ankle day at the gym because you’d need it if you were wearing these. Platform shoes are out in a massive way. That’s great news for shorter girls, but taller ones? Well…we’re left out in the cold, unfortunately — time to look 6’1”!

Today’s platform shoes mostly roll with sneakers, which is much easier on the ankle compared to the ones back in the day. They’re also not nearly as high. Think an extra three inches or so. However, don’t be surprised if you stop seeing platform sandal or two. Versace, in particular, was going hard with platform heels.

WEAR INSTEAD: Derbies

WEAR INSTEAD: Derbies

Now is the time to ditch those shoes that are hurting your feet. This isn’t something fashion designers have decided—we just think we all need a little break from aching toes, arches, and heels. Nothing is worse than feeling like you need to remove your feet at the end of a long day, right, ladies?

Again, we're not wasting any time this year. Even the cutest shoes aren't worth the doctoring you have to do after a night out. It's time to give those footsies a rest and wear something a little more comfortable. Derbies were designed for comfort, and they can even look uber classy.

DITCH: Denim Everything (Y2K Denim)

DITCH: Denim Everything (Y2K Denim)

We'll fight this one until our dying breath, mostly because we lived through the '90s and early 2000s when denim everything was huge. It popped up for a moment last year, and it managed to stick around. Finally, people are moving on, and we're super excited. Denim is a strong material, but not really fashionable when your whole outfit is comprised of it.

Unless you're trying to honor our neighbors to the north by rocking out in your Canadian tuxedo, limit your denim, please. It's to the point where we want to say you shouldn't wear a denim jacket with jeans because it's a bit too much for the eye. We're sure even Britney Spears and Justin Timberlake remember their denim mistakes of the past.

WEAR INSTEAD: Plaid

WEAR INSTEAD: Plaid

Plaid is timeless and a classic. It's back in, and women who love fall colors and style will rejoice. It honestly never went away for us autumn-adorers, but now, it's fashionable all year around. Head-to-toe plaid is a bit much, but a shirt or an accessory is the perfect amount! There are also a ton of different colors on the market to play with.

It's rare to find something so sexy and comfy at the same time, but these shirts are exactly that. Wear them out on the town or curled up at home. We don't want to say that plaid is the coziest of all designs out there, but it is. It makes total sense that the "comfy" year will include plaid as a huge trend.

DITCH: Peter Pan Collars

DITCH: Peter Pan Collars

Peter Pan collars come back when things like Downton Abby were huge. While the show is still good, we all see Peter Pan collars for what they are: a bit too much. They give you an interesting silhouette at best, but they make you look like you walked out of a time machine.

This look speaks for itself: dated. We're pretty sure our moms wore these back in the '70s and '80s, and we're done with that. No more Peter Pan collars for the year. Fashion experts happily called for the death of this trend, and we stand behind them 100% (and then some).

Rindoff/Charriau/Getty Images Entertainment/Getty Images

WEAR INSTEAD: Ruffled Collars

WEAR INSTEAD: Ruffled Collars

This season, you'll see a lot of ruffled collars everywhere you go! In all honesty, it is comparable to the hipster culture of the early 2000s, despite the fact that it pretends to be fresh new and sophisticated. It's almost like Chanel and Manic Pixie Dream Girl got together and had a baby.

Ruffled collars are always and will continue to be our go-to choice for a variety of reasons, including the fact that they are delicate, feminine, and can be worn with virtually any outfit (other than a T-shirt, at least). It has never been easier to jump on board with the latest fashion trend given that you can now acquire a collar change to fit with your present wardrobe.

DITCH: High-Low Hemlines

DITCH: High-Low Hemlines

There was a time when high-low cut clothing was popular, and we adored it. Sadly, it's time to pack these skirts and dresses away in the closet. We're going to go with something that's a bit more edgy and a bit shorter (and spoiler alert, the next "wear instead" definitely has more flare than this particular style).

One thing that's in is shorter, mini skirts — a trend popping up thanks to the '90s resurgence. It honestly won't take long for people to get sick of them, so high-low cut dresses and skirts may make a comeback next year. Don't put them too far away because styles like this will remain timeless.

(Image via Midjourney; Midjourney)

WEAR INSTEAD: Strait Cut Skirts

WEAR INSTEAD: Strait Cut Skirts

Let's ditch the skirts with the high-low cut and go for the straight cuts instead. We can understand why fashion designers are turning to this pattern rather frequently. It appears to have a beauty that comes easily. It is the greatest of both worlds for you to have, and the best part is? They are incredibly versatile and work wonderfully with anything.

Throw a pair of heels on and a nice stylish blouse, and you have an outfit that will be the talk of everyone around you. We also love the silhouette it creates, and that’s probably why so many experts are going with this type of hemline specifically. We’re gonna love this one while it lasts.

DITCH: Skirts With Side Slits

DITCH: Skirts With Side Slits

Skirts with side slits are great for a vacation or a trip to the beach, but out and about in town? Not so much. People are going with maxi-length skirts instead. We like the flow of a full skirt a little more anyway. Besides, leaving this behind also alleviates the anxiety around how it will fall whenever you take a seat.

Nothing is worse than sitting down in a chair and having it droop over your lap. Or even worse, the wind blowing and having it show off parts you never wanted to show off. Let's roll with full skirts or even go with something that's classy and timeless.

Jon Kopaloff/FilmMagic/Getty Images; Kelly Sullivan/Getty Images Entertainment/Getty Images

WEAR INSTEAD: Maxi Skirts and Dresses

WEAR INSTEAD: Maxi Skirts and Dresses

As we get further into the 2020s, the skirts are getting longer. We started with just above the knee, then it got a little longer and went to just below the knee. Now what’s in fashion? Maxi skirts and dresses. The hemline is down to the ground, ladies! Honestly, we’re living for it.

Something about a maxi skirt makes you feel so high class in the best way. You feel fashionable without even trying too hard. Throw on a maxi dress, a few accessories, a bold lip, and you’re ready for the day. Button-up dresses seem to be coming back pretty strong, as well, so you can always incorporate this trend with the maxi length.

DITCH: All the Animal Print

DITCH: All the Animal Print

Trust us, zebras can barely pull off zebra print, much less a grown adult. Leave the animal print on the Serengeti and stick to something a little less gaudy. If you try to dress like one wild animal, you may end up looking like another: a cougar.

Animal print certainly was the "in" thing for far too long if you ask us. Thankfully, it's out of style, and we're not sure if it'll return any time soon. If you love animal print, this is the "Swan Song" you've been afraid of. If you must wear anything animal, go with tortoise shell (faux of course).

WEAR INSTEAD: Metallics

WEAR INSTEAD: Metallics

Metallics are back! Like Rhianna said: shine bright like a diamond — or in this case, shine bright like platinum. Metallics were huge in the ‘90s too, but thankfully, we won’t be heading back toward that whole space-age trend that was so popular back then. No one wants to see that monstrosity of a trend come back.

While some experts say metallic dresses are in, others are going with a simpler approach using a metallic skirt or even a dainty metallic top. Since wide-leg pants are also very fashionable this year, you can go with metallic trousers and a black top. The combo is new but also melodically sings fashionable.

DITCH: Earthy Neutrals

DITCH: Earthy Neutrals

Earthy neutrals were all the rage last year. Whites, creams, and tans kept your wardrobe simple and warm, but people don't want simple anymore. Maybe it's because we're all in the mood for a little color, but we're leaving these simple shades behind this year.

While it's still okay to wear earthy neutrals here and there, don't design outfits around these shades. Just use them to make your color choices really pop. Neutrals will never truly fall out of fashion since you need them to avoid looking like an '80s Rebel with seven different colors but wear them sparingly.

WEAR INSTEAD: Pastels

WEAR INSTEAD: Pastels

A couple of years ago, neons were very in, but now? Pastel colors. If this is a little confusing, let us explain what we mean. Pastel colors just means anything that's gentle and has an ethereal tint to it. Stylist experts are encouraging people to break out that light yellow and the beautiful sky blues.

Instead of going with a white top and a blue skirt, go with more color! Nothing is wrong with a yellow top and a blue skirt. Just choose complementary colors. No matter how much you want saturated blue and bright vibrant orange to match, it never will. It just hurts the eyes in the worst way.

DITCH: Chunky Dad Sneakers

DITCH: Chunky Dad Sneakers

Are the sneakers chunky or are the dads wearing them chunky? Either way, leave the giant sneakers in the early '90s where they belong. Sneakers are certainly comfy and nice to keep around when you need them, but they're probably not the look you're going for if you want to stay trendy.

Let's be honest. We don't want to look like a bunch of dads on a Sunday cookout, right? No matter how beautiful your flowy dress is, it'll never make up for the monstrosity of the chunky dad sneakers that are on your feet. It's totally possible to be comfortable and stylish. It's just about finding the right balance. These are not it.

WEAR INSTEAD: Square-Toed, Chunky Heels

WEAR INSTEAD: Square-Toed, Chunky Heels

Please, we’re begging you to shove your chunky dad sneakers to the back of your closet. Better yet, donate them! And in the meantime, purchase a pair of square-toed, chunky heels. These are going to be huge this year. They can be dressed up or down. They look just as chic with denim as they do with a dress!

This fits with the rest of the trends that are coming back, so embrace it. The best part is that most chunky heels don't require a ton of balance so your ankles with thank you. On top of that, most aren't that high — maybe a few inches at most.

DITCH: Anything Vinyl and Latex

DITCH: Anything Vinyl and Latex

Want to look strange AND feel claustrophobic? Then, by all means, slap on a pair of latex pants. Otherwise, stick to natural fibers. Skin tight and sweaty. If you're ready to peel these pants off of you, go ahead. Though we don't recommend it.

Vinyl and latex aren't what clothes should be made out of. If you think about it, you don't want to wear something that house paint is literally made out of, right? These pants certainly peel off your skin like latex paint does in a humid environment. That's gonna be a no from us.

WEAR INSTEAD: Faux-Leather

WEAR INSTEAD: Faux-Leather

Vinyl and latex may be on the way out, but faux leather is on the way in. Faux-leather jackets are perfect for every season, depending on the color. A classic black leather jacket transitions from fall to winter, but a colored faux-leather jacket can be worn throughout spring and into summer (depending on where you live).

All the rock n roll style of a leather jacket without the guilt of real leather. This is a look that anyone can pull off and look great. Not to mention the "faux" part of this trend allows you to explore whatever color you want (going with all the other trends from this year). Plus, you don't have to feel bad about wearing an animal!

DITCH: Micro Purses

DITCH: Micro Purses

Micro purses are a 2-for-1 special: they look dumb AND they're wildly impractical. Try putting more than just your wallet in your purse. There's no way. It's impossible, and so you have to choose what you want to carry with you. Good news, if you take out your license and card, you might fit those and your lipstick in your purse!

Okay, we're done making fun of micro purses. We hated how they were ever in fashion because we liked to carry more than three things. We prefer bags that you can carry your wallet and a few other necessary items. The joke is that women carry too many items, but no one complains when we have something anytime anyone needs a tylenol or bandaid or safety pin.

WEAR INSTEAD: Oversized Bags

WEAR INSTEAD: Oversized Bags

Finally, a more practical purse. You’ll never have to worry about not having room for your must-haves. Bottega Veneta’s signature “Pouch” is the most popular oversized bag among celebrities—but it comes at a price! There are lots of dupes that are more affordable if you don’t want to spend more than $1,000 on a purse!

You're a busy woman with responsibilities and you've got a lot to carry. Don't squeeze into something that won't fit your lifestyle. These bags will suit you better, we're sure of it. Naturally, you don't need to spend a grand on your oversized bag. Your local department store will likely have something at a fraction of the cost but just as beautiful.

DITCH: Boxy Cropped Tops

DITCH: Boxy Cropped Tops

Crop tops are a statement piece. Specifically, they state, "I have nothing to offer the world beyond a good body." Tops like these may seem effortless to you, but to most folks, they just look lazy. Furthermore, most of us don't really have the body that looks great in a boxy cropped top.

If you do, then more power to you. The rest of us, we'll stick with shirts that are the correct length — you know, the ones that actually reach your jeans when it hangs off your shoulders. Let's ditch the boxy crop tops this year and go for something more practical.

WEAR INSTEAD: XXL Button Downs

WEAR INSTEAD: XXL Button Downs

The best part about this trend is that you most likely already have an XXL button-down hanging in your closet. If not, you won’t regret purchasing this wardrobe mainstay. It can be worn as a jacket over a graphic tee for a night out with friends or styled with jeans and a pair of heels.

Anyone can find a way to wear these that matches their style and makes them feel confident. Pick one out and find your new way to rock it. This year, embrace the XXL button-down trend, and we bet that it'll become a regular part of your wardrobe going forward. The best part? It's almost always in style.

DITCH: Straw Bags

DITCH: Straw Bags

Straw bags, while undeniably summery and cute, are due for a refresh in 2024. Their delicate nature makes them impractical for everyday use, prone to tears and weather damage. The natural material loses its charm quickly, turning discolored and frayed.

Plus, their casual vibe clashes with the current focus on elevated, polished aesthetics. Consider a sturdier tote or a modern woven leather bag that offers both style and practicality – perfect for carrying your essentials throughout the day.

WEAR INSTEAD: Bright Bags

So, we said straw bags were out, so what’s the alternative? Bright bags with electric, saturated colors! This year isn’t the time to grab something that’s dull and bland. We’ve all had a rough last couple of years, so we want to see some color in our life (and it’s about time).

You can match the color with your outfit pretty easily. Just be sure to avoid clashing colors. Classic blue with a pumpkin orange will probably make people cringe when they see it. When in doubt, you can always search online to see if the colors you’ve chosen clash. Most of the time your eye is a good judge, meaning if your outfit feels off, maybe swap something out.

DITCH: Biker Shorts

DITCH: Biker Shorts

Wearing biker shorts in public is basically the same as showing up in your underwear. Nothing says classy like lycra bunching up in every nook and cranny south of your belly button. Save these 'pants' for pedaling and put on some real clothes before you go out.

Athletic wear is still pretty big, but we suspect biker shorts to stay out of the limelight for a while. They popped up thanks to the Kardashians, and we're all kinda done with the group. With trendy sweatpants coming into style, people are likely going to embrace them and donate their biker shorts.

WEAR INSTEAD: Khakis

WEAR INSTEAD: Khakis

We're not saying we have to look like you work at Target, but give khakis another chance. We were all burned when we had to wear khakis when we worked retail (and those who didn't were extremely lucky), but hear us out. They're not really that bad. Some of the newer styles look super good for a weekend with your beau or a morning of running errands.

Thankfully they're not just for the nerds anymore. Khakis, when worn right, can go with just about anything you want to try out. See what you can come up with! We suggest giving the paper bag trend or even trying some wide-leg pants that are a unique khaki shade. You also won't go wrong with a black top and khaki pants.

DITCH: Cinch Belts

DITCH: Cinch Belts

No matter how good we think cinch belts look, stylists have said they're out. This year, big and baggy clothes are coming back. We're calling this year the "comfy" year because large silhouettes are in-style. That means cinch belts are no longer the go-to item.

That doesn't necessarily mean all belts are out, but huge statement cinch belts? Nah. Let's pass those up and just hope that they come back again in the near future. Until then, you can catch us in our comfiest sweater lounging on the couch while watching Netflix.

WEAR INSTEAD: Chain Belts

Oh, yes. We all remember the chain belts of the ‘90s, and they’re coming back with a vengeance. It’s certainly been a long time since this style has come back. Unlike many other trends that come and go regularly (like cinch belts), this one hasn’t been around for several decades!

Currently, thinner chain belts are on the up-and-up, but we suspect the round-link chain belts will be on their way back in no time. Some stylists are also experimenting with multiple chains that dangle effortlessly on the hip. Gotta say that this is a fantastic mixture of tough and feminine.

DITCH: Mismatched Jewels

DITCH: Mismatched Jewels

We were seriously behind this trend last year. It was actually one of our favorites. It was about combining dainty necklaces, abstract earrings, delicate rings, and chunky chain-link jewels. However, things are getting simpler. In fact, we're ditching the majority of our accessories and rolling with one or two things.

Guess that whole "look in the mirror and take one thing off before walking out" still stands true. Maybe some earrings and a double necklace should do it, but we don't need to don eight pieces every time we head out for work or a night on the town (safely, of course).

WEAR INSTEAD: Large Accessories

WEAR INSTEAD: Large Accessories

It's time to say goodbye to mismatched jewels and welcome to huge accessories! Another trend that was popular in the '90s and is making a comeback is this one. In those days, nearly everyone wore hoops, which caused their hair to become hopelessly entangled. It was really difficult to remove those items at the end of the day. We can give thanks that we no longer have to worry about that.

As the fad of wearing enormous accessories has made a comeback, designers have begun creating jewelry that gives the impression of being cumbersome without actually being so. That means there's reduced hair loss! We are speechless; today is truly a wonderful day to be alive. If only back in those days we had access to something similar to this...

DITCH: Crochet Knits

DITCH: Crochet Knits

We fell victim to the crochet knits trend, but how could we not? It reminded us of our grandma in the best way, and some of the styles were actually pretty awesome. It was great to know that maybe you could even make your own sweaters. Then, we picked up the knitting needles and figured out it wasn't as easy as it looks.

However, the grand-millennial, crocheted clothing trend has fallen out of style — we know more than just millennials wore this style, but apparently, that's what it was being called! While a knitted sweatshirt will still pop up this winter, it won't be an all-season thing like it was last year.

WEAR INSTEAD: Oversized Sweatshirts

WEAR INSTEAD: Oversized Sweatshirts

Okay, this is one we're super psyched about. Who doesn't love a good, oversized sweatshirt? One that'll keep you warm through the coldest of weather. It's like a good hot cup of tea on a snowy day. Can you tell that we're excited about this oversized sweatshirt trend?

The reason it's coming back is because it's all about ditching whatever created that stark hourglass body shape. Stylists are bringing out big silhouettes, and we thank them for that. While tailored garments make you look put together, oversized and bulky items scream "comfy cozy" in a way we all love.

DITCH: Crocs

DITCH: Crocs

In the 2000s, Crocs were all the rage, but after two decades, it's time to wave goodbye to your favorite pair of ergonomic shoes. If you truly believe that you will be unable to part with them, you should invest on a pair of tennis shoes, which is a more upscale kind of shoe.

We know, we know. They're so cozy and easy to get in and out of. You decide if that's worth the odd expressions on passing faces when you wear them out. Nowadays there are tons of options out there that are both stylish and comfy, so explore your options instead of going with the same-old-same-old.

WEAR INSTEAD: Ugg Boots

You might find yourself asking “Why are UGGs back?” No shame there. We wondered the same thing until we took a good, long look into the shoe. The fact of the matter is that they are stupid comfortable. We mean that in every way possible. Chances are, you’ve never felt a shoe so comfortable in your life.

Are they ugly? Certainly, but comfort is far more important than looking good when you reach the end of the day and want to take your shoes off your feet. For the coming year, you should dress in whatever makes you feel the most at ease (within reason of course).

DITCH: Low-Rise Jeans

DITCH: Low-Rise Jeans

Now, this is one style that we're going to miss. Low-Rise Jeans and trousers were something everyone could really enjoy. They came in a variety of styles, colors, and designs. The versatility was astounding, and that was the best thing about it. Unfortunately, the '90s are coming back with force.

Anyone who knows about the decade knows that it was defined by one thing: mid-rise. Naturally, the fashion trends of that decade are also coming back. While we wished mid-rise jeans would stay in the past, they simply didn't. Time to push your low-Rise jeans to the back of the closet.

Love them or hate them '90s jeans are coming back, and mid-rise was one of the biggest fashion trends of the decade. We called it when we said that they were coming back late 2021. You can thank the younger generations for this one. They love everything that has anything to do with the '90s and early 2000s!

Gotta admit that the '90s were a pretty great decade. You can always pair your mid-rise jeans with a tie-dye shirt to really get the ensemble going. There's a strong chance you may still have some of these items still in your closet! That is, as long as you don't throw away stuff often. Pull it out and let the nostalgia wash over you again.

DITCH: White Accessories

DITCH: White Accessories

The fad of wearing white accessories appears to be dying off. Do not misunderstand us; we were on board with this style for a while, but we feel that it has reached its end at this point. It is time to switch to something that is more adaptable and can be worn with everything.

That is to say, something that will work especially well now that color is making a significant comeback in the fashion world. The problem with white accessories is that they tend to make the person who is wearing them look washed out. That's not going to work for us at all. Yeah, that's gonna be a no from us.

WEAR INSTEAD: Hoop Earrings

WEAR INSTEAD: Hoop Earrings

Hoop earrings are easy to use because they go with everything. That's especially useful this year because color is in — in a big way. It can be hard to accessorize with a ton of colors, so what accessory alternative do you have? Uh, hoop earrings! Hoop earrings are absolutely huge.

It may be hard to find a pair that suits your needs perfectly, but a small hoop earrings is an ideal accessory for any outfit. Not to mention, hoops are classy and will go with pretty much any outfit in existence. Just make sure to find a good quality pair that will last a while!

DITCH: Skinny Jeans

DITCH: Skinny Jeans

It has been decreed! Skinny jeans are out! The experts are running from skinny jeans like they’re the plague and they’re choosing to go with a wider-cut leg. The thing we like about skinny jeans is that we don’t have to worry about water on the ground, but c’est la vie!

If you want to be fashionable this year, you’ll want to pull your wide-leg jeans and trousers out. You can thank younger generations for this one. At least the wide-leg trend works better for those of us with an apple body type. That being said, they’ll have to pry my skinny jeans out of my cold dead hands.

WEAR INSTEAD: Regular or Wide-Cut Leg Jeans

WEAR INSTEAD: Regular or Wide-Cut Leg Jeans

Regular and wide-leg jeans are coming back as the skinny jean falls to the wayside. Wide-leg jeans work for many body types and look especially stylish when paired with a really nice top. Since the wide-leg trend is coming back, that means other types of jeans are coming back to a lesser degree.

You might see jeans with a larger flare than normal as designers flirt with the idea of bringing bell-bottoms back. The younger generations have already totally embraced bell-bottoms, so we’ll probably see the trend change in the middle of the year from wide-leg to full-on bell-bottom jeans.

DITCH: Joggers

DITCH: Joggers

Joggers and regular, ugly gray sweats aren’t for fashion. Are they comfortable? Absolutely, but you wouldn’t want to wear them out. We get that things have been tough in the last couple of years for all of us, but let's actually try a little harder when we go out, please?

Don’t feel like you need to put on a full face of makeup. It isn’t the ‘50s. However, the old joggers in the back of our closets should be retired to sleepwear. If they’re comfortable, they’re best to be slept in anyway. Next time you make a run to Target, change out of them into something more stylish.

WEAR INSTEAD: Fashion Sweats

WEAR INSTEAD: Fashion Sweats

When we say stylish, we don’t mean uncomfortable, of course. Sweats can still be worn out, but these are definitely different than your boyfriend’s or husband’s joggers. These are bright colors with interesting designs. Some aren’t even tapered at the end, so they look good with shoes other than a tennis shoe.

With fashion sweats, you can still be comfortable while going out for a little shopping. The biggest difference is that fashion sweats are also made using a variety of materials from fleece to a faux jean material and even plain-ol’ cotton. They also offer interesting designs like tie-dye instead of the bland gray.
