The ‘60s were an iconic time, and a lot of stuff happened. There were riots, the Vietnam war (through the whole decade!), Martin Luther King’s “I have a dream speech,” and so much more. Naturally, you can say a lot of things defined this decade, but nothing defined it more than fashion. The fashion was so unique and there wasn’t anything like it.
Hundreds of thousands of people opposed the war, which brought about hippie fashion, while others used high-fashion to show off their fabulous style. They dressed in neon-bright colors and daring silhouetted dresses that had never been seen before. The ‘60s was the world’s way of throwing the ‘50s aside and moving into the new world.
Yeah, we’re going to say that fashion had a way of defining this decade. Much of the fashion was inspired by the cultural sexual revolution that occurred, which hiked up skirts and encouraged everyone to dress as free as they want. We’re going to say that today’s hipsters owe a debt to their hippie forbearers because they inspired the style many hipsters clamor for today.
