How to Winterize Your Summer Staples

Think the time for shorts, florals, and tank tops is over? Well, think again! You don’t have to pack away your summer staples for the cold months ahead; with these easy styling tips, you can wear them year-round.

Shorts

Denim shorts alone may not keep your legs very warm, but you can fix this problem by layering them over a pair of black or patterned tights. To maintain an autumn look, add a sweater and infinity scarf, and finish it off with your favorite leather or suede booties.

Cream, lace shorts are another great fall option. The lace pairs beautifully with a cable knit, black sweater and black tights.  Add a cream beret or handbag to tie it all together. If you feel like it’s still too cold, look for a pair of fleece-lined tights for extra warmth. There are also shorts specifically designed for the fall and winter seasons. A pair of wool-blend shorts would definitely help you get out of the jeans rut and will still keep you toasty. These shorts look great with knee-high boots, but are also chic with a pair of black heels.

Florals

Sometimes what you need most in the cold weather is a reminder of summer. A floral tank top or dress can perk up your day even while you’re having to scrape ice off your windshield early in the morning. Layer a knitted, taupe cardigan over your favorite sundress and wrap a thin belt around your waist. You can wear tights or leggings and riding boots to make this outfit even cozier; olive green is a great transitional color to tie together the sweater and floral pattern.

Floral scarves are made for those chilly summer nights, but they also make for great day wear in the fall. A simple outfit that you can put together is a chambray shirt, black leggings or jeans, tan riding boots, and a floral scarf.

Tank Tops

Whether solid, striped, or patterned, tank tops are some of the most versatile articles of clothing. Starting with a tank top, you can piece together a professional autumn look for the day and with just a couple switches, take it into the evening as well. For the daytime, layer a mocha-colored blazer over a blush pink tank top and black dress pants. To keep your outfit comfortable for the afternoon ahead, slip on a pair of cream flats or oxfords. When you’re ready to go out at night, exchange your dress pants for black skinny jeans, swap the flats for pointed-toe, black heels, and you’re ready for a night out in no time! If it's cold out, throw on a leather jacket to keep warm without feeling bulky or cumbersome.
