Signs Your Shampoo Is Damaging Your Hair

Shampoos are intended to gently wash away the dirt and oil from your hair while restoring needed moisture, but your shampoo could be doing more harm than good if you are not using the right one. Budget-friendly shampoos can contain lower quality ingredients or harsh chemicals that may damage your hair and scalp if you use them for long periods of time. Sometimes, you may not catch some of the signs of hair damage or not realize your shampoo is the culprit. If your hair is showing any of these signs, you should consider switching to a different shampoo.

  • Dryness
Hair dryness is one of the first signs of damage. When hair is dry, it becomes frizzy, almost rough to the touch, and loses its luster. This can happen if your shampoo is stripping the natural oils from your hair while it is cleaning it. Serums that claim to restore moisture only treat the symptoms of the dryness temporarily; they do not fix the problem at its root. You may think that even though dryness is annoying, it’s not a big deal. Unfortunately this is not the case. Dryness can lead to more serious issues, such as breakage.

  • Split Ends/Breakage
Styling tools and blow dryers may not be the only cause of your split ends and breakage. Have you ever considered that your shampoo may share some of the blame? Shampoo that dries out your locks can eventually lead to breakage over time. Dry hair is brittle and more prone to breaking, so if your shampoo is removing your natural oils and not replacing them with any additional moisture, your hair hardly stands a chance.

  • Dandruff
Along with drying out your strands, your shampoo may also be drying out or irritating your scalp. Dry scalp is the most common cause of dandruff, so before you spend a lot of money on a dermatologist visit and medicated shampoos, try a high quality, natural shampoo. A gentle, moisturizing shampoo will rehydrate your scalp and the natural ingredients can eliminate irritation, which may solve your dandruff problem.

  • Thinning
One of the more extreme signs of damage from shampoo is hair thinning. If your scalp is deprived of moisture for too long, your locks will not receive the proper nutrition. It would take quite a bit of time for your hair to start thinning, but if you neglect the other symptoms of dryness, breakage, and dandruff, it might happen. Don’t fret if your hair is already at this stage; thankfully, the problem is usually reversible with a quality shampoo that rejuvenates your scalp. Though, if you do not see improvement within a couple months, it is probably a good idea to see your doctor.
