The Trendiest Haircuts and Hairstyles for 2024

Chanel Bob

Chanel Bob

The Chanel bob is a blunt chin-length bob or just slightly longer, in many cases, that offers a sleek and cute look that everyone will love. It features plenty of movement and volume and it will make you feel like a Parisian supermodel no matter where you are.

If you are looking for a new hairstyle, the Chanel bob is a low-maintenance option. It gives you an elegant look with less hair to worry about styling. There’s really a lot to love about this haircut and people in 2023 are going to be looking for just this kind of thing, particularly professional women who are always on the go.

Butterfly Cut

Butterfly Cut

The butterfly cut will be sweeping the nation in 2023. This low-maintenance hairstyle trend gives women with long hair a brand-new look without having to sacrifice length. You don't have to bob your hair to freshen up your look. The butterfly cut works to lift and add volume to your hair.

But what is it exactly? It's a bit of a cross between the '70s shag cut donned by Farrah Fawcett and the popular Rachel haircut of Jennifer Aniston in the '90s. The layers are feathered and work well to frame your face. Anyone can wear this style, but those with thinner hair may benefit the most if they are looking to create volume.

Octopus Haircut

Octopus Haircut

The octopus haircut is somewhat similar to the butterfly cut but with a lot more layers. While the butterfly cut has short layers that frame the face, the octopus cut is layered throughout. It loosely resembles an octopus as the layers act as the tentacles of an octopus which is where the name comes from.

Why not a squid though? No matter. The point is that the octopus cut adds a ton of volume thanks to the layers from top to bottom. It’s ideal for those with longer hair, and it’s a more modern and glamorous take on the mullet and shag haircut, serving as a combination of the two.

Curtain Bangs

Curtain Bangs

Curtain bangs are opening up the new year, working for both short bobs and a variety of other looks. They are incredibly versatile and will give you an effortlessly sexy look to your hair. You can also easily add them to your existing cut to change up your look without changing your haircut entirely.

Blunt bobs may especially benefit from curtain bangs. So, if you’ve already tried the Chanel cut, change it up with the some curtain bangs. Curtain bangs have been sported by celebrities like Zendaya and Elizabeth Olson and you can easily rock them too. You won’t regret it!

“Expensive” Blonde

“Expensive” Blonde

We didn’t dub it “expensive” blonde. That’s just the first thing we want to get out of the way. It’s something stylists and celebs have been embracing with open arms. Celebrity colorist Jenna Perry said this shade “emulates the colors of a wheat field on a cool summer day when the wind picks up and it glistens in the sun.”

Okay, that’s a description we can get on board with. The thing about this style is that it can look great as it grows out, especially if you have naturally brown hair. It’s more or less a blonde ombre with very specific shades. At least it’s less damaging than the platinum blonde that’s been in for a bit.

Wolf Cut

Wolf Cut

The Wolf Cut comes to you thanks to TikTok. It’s basically a longer mullet. It was inspired by Billie Eilish in a way, but the biggest thing that spurred this style is the fact that it was easy to do yourself. That much was made clear by the hundreds of videos showing people try this style out.

That being said, we don’t necessarily suggest you try this out by cutting it yourself. It may still be best to go to a stylist to ensure the layers look best for your face shape. However, if you feel gung-ho about cutting your hair yourself, there’s tons of tutorials you can follow.

"Dirty Dancing" Curls

"Dirty Dancing" Curls

No one puts Baby (or her hair) in a corner! If you loved this look on the big screen, you can proudly rock the messy natural curls and bangs this year. The best thing about this hairstyle is that it looks great almost right out of the bed. Sure, you might have to do a little de-frizzing, but other than that? You're good to go.

Another thing? This style looks amazing when you choose a dynamic hair color. A balayage or an ombre will really make this cut pop. It also looks fantastic with solid shades, especially if you can get a lot of shine out of your hair! The shine will make it look consistently bouncy.

The Lob

The Lob

The Lob is literally the name for a long bob. The Lob is typically short and layered in the back and slightly longer (around shoulder-length) in the front. Think a slightly grown-out asymmetrical angular bob. It’s one of the most searched-for hairstyles on Pinterest, and there's a good reason why it's so popular.

Celebrities like Lucy Hale, Jennifer Aniston, Jessica Alba rock it on the reg, but it looks good on literally everyone. There are too many styles out there that look good depending on your face shape, but this one is an all-around winner. Round, square, oval — it doesn't matter! It's time to try out the Lob.

Pixie Cuts

Pixie Cuts

Want the ultimate easy hairstyle? Take a look at pixie cuts. Whether you choose to chop it off or sneakily pin your hair back, a shaggy pixie cut will totally fit in this year. This pixie is all about longer pieces tousled in a “I woke up like this” way.

Isn't that the dream nowadays? You can spend that extra time sleeping, which I think we can all agree we need more of. This works well for thicker hair, but if you have thinner hair, you might just need a little texturizer to get your hair to look a little thicker and stand up throughout the day.

Middle Parts

Middle Parts

Remember when we said that Gen Zs had a vendetta against deep side parts? Because of their hatred for that amazing style, middle parts are back. Maybe it also has something to do with the ‘90s, though. Middle parts were pretty big back then, so we can’t place all of it on Gen Z.

The middle part looks great for longer faces, especially those with an oblong shape. It can add the illusion of roundness. Bangs also work really well with middle parts, and bangs are big this year. The thing about middle parts is that it accentuates the angles in your face. Meaning if you have a round face, maybe stick with the side part.

Low Messy Bun

Low Messy Bun

It's time to be out with the old and in with the new! That means the high, messy bun is being thrown out once again for a much easier and less painful version. The low messy bun is finally back in style, and we support it 100% — actually, we support it more than that.

You may find that a low messy bun won't give you headaches like the top-of-the-head version. This is because there's overall less tension needed to keep it up. This will also decrease the number of hairs you pull out each day (and help decrease the risk of traction alopecia). Give the low messy bun a shot.

'90s Side-Swept Bangs

'90s Side-Swept Bangs

You know how the '90s are coming back in full swing? This is one of those hairstyles that's making a massive comeback (thanks to younger generations).  The secret to great-looking styling is to place your brush on top of your bangs, not underneath. It's such a small move, but it makes all the difference.

Then use your blowdrying to dry them straight back to curls over the brush. That way, they should fall as effortlessly. If you want to make sure they stay there throughout the day, go with a light hairspray. Nothing too immobilizing, however. You want your bangs to move with you, not against you.

'60s Fringe

'60s Fringe

This far-out throwback is coming back. Can you dig it? The new version is a little more modernized, but that makes it all the better. The best thing about '60s Fringe is that it looks great whether you have thin or thick hair! Just make sure you go to a stylist that works on your hair type.

'60s fringe is all about light and feathery layers. Think Brigitte Bardot and Jane Birkin. These women almost invented this style and made it look effortlessly easy. Just know if you get this style, you will have to blowdry your bangs to make sure they sit properly each day. It isn't a huge deal, but it's something to keep in mind.

Side Braid

Side Braid

The side braid was pretty popular when The Hunger Games series was released, but it fell out of favor. Partly because the braids were often almost impossible for the average person to mimic. Well, not anymore! The side braid is coming back, and thankfully, this time it's the classic version.

Not only can everyone actually accomplish the new in-fashion braid, but it's also so versatile. This natural, almost effortless look goes with nearly any outfit whether you’re dressing up or down. If you're having a little trouble, don't be afraid to put your hair in a ponytail before beginning to braid.

Sleek, Kempt Bob

Sleek, Kempt Bob

Bobs have never really gone out of style. They simply wax and wane in popularity. Sometimes everyone has a bob while other times, hardly anyone has one! Regardless, they're still very fashionable. This year, you'll see tons of people rocking a bob. Why? The answer is super easy to answer (as easy as the style, you could say).

The bob is one of the easiest hairstyles to maintain; the “together” bob is a sleek, straight look that anyone can sport. If your hair isn't naturally straight, you can pull out a hair straightener to get a sleeker look. If not, don't be afraid to let your hair air-dry. Natural hair is definitely also in this year.

Scrunchies

Scrunchies

Wait, no way this is right. Welp, you read that right—scrunchies. They haven’t been in style since the late 1990s or early 2000s, but they’re back, and you know what? Good. We're glad because they do less damage to the hair compared to the bands we've been using since scrunchies fell out of style.

While you could pull out your old scrunchies from the early '90s, don't be afraid to look at modern styles! They have so many new ones that we didn't see back then. We've seen comfy sweater knit scrunchies, little bows, and all sorts of other designs we wish we had back when we were younger.

Natural Hair

Natural Hair

Every year that goes by, diversity is becoming more and more embrased. This year is definitely going to be the most inclusive year yet. We can only go up, right? Basically, this means it's time to rock what the good lord gave you, laides! Natural hair is here to stay.

The best thing about this is that it doesn't matter what texture or growth pattern you have. Natural hair looks strong, yet delicate — feminine yet very much demanding respect. That's what we all want, isn't it? R-E-S-P-E-C-T. That's what Aretha Franklin told us to strive for, and we're here for that.

Deep Side Part

Deep Side Part

No matter how much Gen Zs try to cancel the deep side part, it isn't going anywhere. We all grew up with it, and we'll always make sure it has its place in fashion. The deep side part has been "in" for as long as we can remember. The middle part has attempted to push it out, but nope!

The deep side part has a certain je ne sais quoi.  Although the middle part is a much easier hairstyle to manage, the deep side part is a much more mature, put-together look. It also can highlight the side of your face that you like most. It has a slight slimming effect, which we all need after a high-sodium dinner, right?

Messy, Curly Bob

Messy, Curly Bob

The messy, curly bob is the same length as the sleek bob, but it’s a bit more unkempt. But wait a minute! That looks like you just rolled out of bed! Yeah, you're right. The messy, curly bob is basically a really good excuse to rock your bedhead throughout the day.

Just flip your hair over, spray, and you’re set! For those with naturally wavy hair, it's even easier. Just let your hair air-dry after a wash, and you're good to go. At most, you may need a little de-frizz. The rest of us can get salt spray or texturizer to get the messy, curly look. Don't forget you can always curl and lightly comb them out for this look, too!

Tight Curls

Tight Curls

Curls are in, and the tighter (and bigger) the better. Just make sure you don’t damage your hair trying to achieve this look. This look is all about letting your hair go free without putting a ton of chemicals in your hair. The tightness of the curls definitely depend on what you like best and your hair type.

If you're going with super tight curls, don't be afraid to roll with some flyaway tendrils to make the style really stand out. Whether dressed up or down, this style can look beautiful and oozes confidence. Longer hair also gives you the opportunity to style it half up in a bun, too.

Center Part Fringe

Center Part Fringe

This year, stylists are absolutely loving center part fringe. This is when you have a little peek-a-boo in the center of your bangs. Center part fringe is fabulous for women with thinner hair that have a hard time pulling off blunt bangs. They're almost like wispy bangs, but it parts in the center like a curtain.

The difference between these and curtain bangs is that the latter has a much larger space. This is almost like wispy bangs meet curtain bangs. Additionally, you can roll center part fringe with long or short hair! It doesn't matter. Get yourself a bob or let your hair grow out to look like mermaid's hair.

Messy Braids

Messy Braids

We're down with anything messy. When you're tired after a long night (or day), and you just want to get your hair up in a cute style, nothing is easier than a messy bun or messy braid. This one is so versatile that literally anyone can do it. You can have one large braid or incorporate just one smaller braid down the back.

Messy braids can also look stunning when you put your hair up. Try a messy low bun with two messy braids on either side (or on one side for a statement hairstyle). Try adding in some peek-a-boo braids underneath or pull some strands out of the braid a bit for added volume and fun.

Box Braids

Box Braids

Box braids are back in style, but did they ever really fall out of style? Not really. They've always been iconic, and that won't ever change. Three decades ago, they blew up thanks to Jada Pinkett, Janet Jackson, and Brandy. This protective style is the perfect solution to add length, too.

It's also fun to throw the braids back over your shoulder, not gonna lie. Like usual, the braids are decked out with beads, metallic thread, and colorful highlights that make them pop. Some celebs are putting their box braids up in a bun (low or high), and we're absolutely living for it.

Reddish Browns

Reddish Browns

Reddish browns are usually saved for the fall, but this shade is so in this year (and early on). This warm, nutty color is perfect for this year, and it's just what we need. While mahogany shades have been popular in the past, this year is all about the shades that lean closer to natural shades.

We're talking about the reddish browns that pop in the sunshine — copper strands that glow when you step outside! Reddish browns have such a wide spectrum of colors, so play around with different shades to see which one complements your skin complexion the best. Browner usually suits fairer skins while the reds work great on tan and darker skin tones.

Long ‘70s Hair

Long ‘70s Hair

It’s not all about short hair! Long ‘70s hair is back. While some stylists love to curl and flip this hair, we’re going to highlight the air-dried, natural hair we saw back in the day. This one has tons of layers and screams “yeah, I went to Woodstock.” We know it was ’69, but the influence carried into the ‘70s, okay?

This year, long ‘70s hair needs to have some bangs to really bring the look together. You can roll with wispy bangs or curtain bangs. Blunt bangs can certainly work, but it takes away some of the hippie look you might be going for. Then again, it’s all about preference. You do you!

Air-Dried Texture

Air-Dried Texture

Treat yo' self this year! That means also treating your hair to less heat. Lots of heat can cause damage over time, which can result in thinning. Some days this year, it might be worth putting the hairdryer, straightener, or curler aside and allow your hair to dry naturally. The more texture you have, the better.

That doesn't mean that straight hair is left out. If you have pin-straight hair, that's cool too! You can get a little more texture by using a texturizer or even dry shampoo for volume. Just try not to use too much dry shampoo on clean hair as it could damage the hair follicle. Just a little bit should do the trick.

Soft-Serve Mullet

Soft-Serve Mullet

This one is all thanks to Miley Cyrus and Doja Cat. This isn’t the typical country-boy mullet you saw back in the ‘90s and early 2000s – we’re looking at you Billy Ray. What is it about the Cyrus’s and their mullet styles? Anyway…this one is being called “soft-serve” mullet to draw it apart from the beer can version.

The soft-serve mullet is a longer, shag-like style with lots of layers that taper down. It brings fullness at the top and often has bangs whether they're long or short bab bangs. We're definitely on the fence about this one, but it has appealed to a ton of people. Then again, a dramatic eye look would certainly change this style quite a bit.

Asymmetrical Angular Bob

Asymmetrical Angular Bob

The asymmetrical angular bob has always been a very popular hairstyle. The number one reason? It's no muss, no fuss! At most, you'll have to blowdry your hair, but it isn't like you have to worry about putting it up on hot days (and it certainly doesn't catch on necklace clasps!).

The asymmetrical, angular bob is one of the hottest looks of 2023. For this style, we suggest going as sleek as you can, but nothing is stopping you from styling it up. Also, don't be afraid to go after this hairstyle if you have loose curly or wavy hair — it'll look just as amazing and flattering.

Buzz Cuts

Buzz Cuts

For a while, we've been watching people go with undercuts. They were cool and all, but we were wondering when people go jump straight into a full buzz cut. The time is finally here! Stylists say that buzz cuts are going to be huge this year, and it's about time. Talk about effortless!

The buzz cut is the ultimate get-up-and-go cut. Not to mention, buzz cuts look super edgy. Throw on a leather jacket and some skinny jeans, and you're golden. You can also make it look a little delicate by throwing in some florals or soft laces. The options are limitless despite the lack of actual hair.

“Girl Next Door” Copper

“Girl Next Door” Copper

Natural reds are going to blow up this year. One of the biggest shades is called “Girl Next Door” copper. This is a very specific red shade that screams “innocence” and “playful.” The best thing about this shade is that it can look great on any skin tone, even the lightest skin tones out there!

Something to keep in mind is that copper colors like this can fade and dull very quickly. Red, in general, is very tough to keep in the hair, so you may require frequent visits to the salon. Roots are also very obvious so be sure to keep up with your regular six-week salon visit!

‘90s Tendrils

‘90s Tendrils

For the last year or so, stylists have been flirting with tendrils. They’ve been afraid to really embrace it, but younger generations have grabbed onto the trend and ran with it. That means it’s back in full force. You remember when you would pull a few strands out of your pony before heading to class or work?

Yeah, those styles are back. These ‘90s tendrils have thankfully changed a little to look a little better. They’re thicker, which certainly frames the face much better than the four strands we pulled out. In addition to that, some celebs and influencers are pulling out two thicker locks, and honestly? We love that.

Short and Wild Shag

Short and Wild Shag

The short and wild shag is almost like the wolf cut, but it’s all about curly hair. This style does look best with looser curls because it looks more like a shag. Tightly curled shags can come off as a bob, which is a style in-and-of-itself – don’t get us wrong! It also looks amazing, but this one is all about large, loose curls.

You can also work with slightly wavy hair. Don’t be afraid to grab the curler and some texturizing hairspray to really bring some volume into your lovely locks. A big reason this one is top for the year is Zendaya. She’s rocked this hair on the red carpet and looked amazing. It’s no surprise we all want to look like her!

Hair Accessories Galore

Hair Accessories Galore

You know how we said that the ‘90s were coming back? Yeah, we literally mean that. Hair accessories are also coming back with a vengeance. Thankfully, that doesn’t mean butterfly clips are going to be reintroduced. You’ll be hard-pressed to see us wearing those monstrosities again. Instead, we mean hair clips.

You’ll notice there are a few updates. Hair barrettes have gotten larger – much larger. Now, some are big enough to cover the entire back of your head! Some still roll with the smaller ones but add three to five to create a little design. At the same time, claw clips are back, but they’re much smaller than the ones we’re used to.

Kirstin Sinclair/Getty Images Entertainment/Getty Images

Blunt Collarbone Bob

Blunt Collarbone Bob

While many of the cuts this year will be about layers, the blunt collarbone bob is all about sleek and straight. A few layers are sometimes added for texturization, but other than that, the straightness of it is about control and showing put-togetherness. This one is great for someone that wants to be taken seriously.

It also gives you the option of curling it for more of a chic look that’s more playful. The collarbone length gives you tons of options for hairstyles, too. You can get a half-bun out of this length as well as playing with hair accessories (which is another trend you’ll find on this list).

Intricate Cornrows

Intricate Cornrows

Cornrows are classic and will always be in-style. However, now more than ever, you may notice how people are putting designs in their cornrows. Some go with a swooping look while others prefer to go with something more geometric with sharp lines. There’s so much versatility here!

A lot of stylists also recommend playing with thickness. One of the prettiest we’ve seen was using two thick cornrows on either side while using thinner cornrows to accentuate. The only limit here is your mind! Don’t be afraid to browse Pinterest for some ideas on what you could do.

Toasted Caramel

Toasted Caramel

First of all, we love the name of this one. Toasted caramel? Uh, yes! Reminds us of delicious coffee on a Saturday afternoon. Second, the color is absolutely beautiful. This ombre look is perfect for the winter and summer. It really warms up your hair, which is exactly what you want for all seasons.

Alternatively, these shades (a little red, a little brown, a little blonde) also look fantastic on any skin tone whether it’s super light or dark! The only downside is that it may be a little expensive, and it definitely requires a salon visit. This isn’t something you want to try and accomplish yourself in the bathroom.
