What Not to Wear to a Wedding

It’s officially wedding season! You’ve probably received an invite for at least a wedding or two over the next couple of months, and if you’re like most girls, you’ve already started planning your outfits for these events. Summer is a great time to hold a wedding because of the warm weather and sunshine, but don’t forget that even though you want to relax and have fun with the new couple, there are still some rules to follow when it comes to attire.

Colors

White is a seemingly obvious no-no, but you’d be surprised at how many people wear white or off-white to a wedding. White is reserved for the bride alone since it’s her big day, so don’t be that person who tries to upstage her. Don’t try to get away with a champagne or blush-colored dress either; it looks too similar to white, especially at a distance. A casual, fun black dress or skirt is okay, but wearing all-black to a wedding is usually frowned upon (unless it’s a black tie wedding). If you’re going to wear something black, be sure to liven it up with a pair of nude heels or gold jewelry. Finally, try to avoid colors that are too bold or flashy, like neon yellow or hot pink. If you must wear one of these colors, limit it to a clutch or a pair of earrings.

Casual or Formal?

Your level of dress depends on how formal or casual the wedding is. A beach wedding is obviously going to have a different dress code than a black tie affair, so you will need to dress accordingly. For a more low-key, outdoor wedding, a sundress or maxi dress is fine, but you need to wear an evening gown or appropriate-length cocktail dress for formal ceremonies. No matter how casual the wedding is going to be, you should never ever wear jeans, shorts, or any article of clothing you would potentially wear to the club. You’ll be the center of attention at that wedding--in the worst way possible. You’ll look tacky, and the bride and groom will loathe you for taking attention away from their big day. If you aren’t sure how to dress, you can always check with the bride/bridal party to see what you are expected to wear.

Shoes & Accessories

Flats, sandals, and heels are acceptable at almost all weddings, so you can easily find a pair of shoes that you are comfortable wearing. Don’t get too comfortable, though. You’ll want to steer clear of tennis shoes or rubber flip flops, even if you are at a beach wedding. It’s really not that hard to throw on a pair of cute shoes, and they will make a huge difference in your overall appearance. When you’re deciding what accessories to wear to finish off your outfit, remember that less is more. Instead of a gaudy statement necklace, up your style factor with a dainty gold chain and pendant and some pearl earrings.
