Historically speaking, Star Wars doesn’t have a great track record with its female characters. Even Princess Leia goes from firm warrior to sex slave in almost no time. With Padme, George Lucas had a chance to redeem himself. He didn’t. While Padme does have her moments of strength, she is ultimately fragile, annoying, and in desperate need of saving.

The two-headed commentator from Anakin’s podrace in The Phantom Menace is almost too annoying to sit through. Their job in the film is to make corny jokes and introduce us to one-scene-wonder characters we have a hard time caring about. If George was trying to make a statement about sports commentators, he missed his mark.

Star Wars gave us Darth Vader, who is quite possibly the most menacing villain in cinema history. However, nearly every attempt at an antagonist since has been a letdown. General Grievous was no exception. He is a cyborg who is apparently dying of some lung disorder. Even though he does have four arms, he doesn’t seem that frightening.

Sometimes origin stories are intriguing, but sometimes they turn your favorite character into a whiny brat. Whether Anakin is awkwardly hitting on Padme or freaking out because Obi Wan doesn’t think it’s a good idea for him to kill children, he is nothing like the Darth Vader we know and fear. He’s just annoying.

One thing that fans of the original series never dreamed of seeing in the prequels was a series of boring discussions on commerce. Nute Gunray, the leader of the Trade Federation, is a manipulative slimeball who makes no attempt to cover up his sinister intentions. This makes other characters seem like fools when they make deals with him.

It is nearly impossible to understand anything Boss Nass says, but you can tell that he spits and makes fart noises. It is almost laughable how little he adds to the plot of The Phantom Menace. His slapstick performance was neither warranted nor appreciated.

There are far too many changes made to the “Special Editions” that upset hardcore fans, but the Max Rebo band has got to be one of the most out of place. What was expected to be gained by a CGI band playing an awful song in an alien language? All it did was turn Jabba’s Palace into a joke.

Watto is a greedy junk shop proprietor, slave trader, and one of many characters in the prequels who seems to be forged out of intense racial insensitivity. I’m not sure why we are supposed to believe that he is able to own human beings, but his arrogance and attraction to money make him that much more despicable.

Probably the first sign that imperfections could exist even in the Star Wars universe, these furry creatures popped up in the conversations of just about everyone leaving a screening of Return of the Jedi. While walking tribal teddy bears are kind of adorable, they clearly just exist to sell more merchandise.

This culturally offensive attempt at comic relief has gotten many people up in arms. Still, Jar Jar's lack of basic decision making skills isn’t enough to stop him from being a senator. Any positive effects he has on the story are done completely by accident.
