Stars’ First Spouses: 30 Marriages We Totally Forgot About

Back in 1993, during the height of the Brat Pack, Julia Roberts up and married country singer Lyle Lovett in a surprise wedding after three or four weeks of dating. According to Lyle, they had never spent more than seven days together before they were betrothed.

Although they may have become a couple, both maintained separate residences in Texas and NYC. The couple announced their separation after just two years together, and Julia considers the marriage a miscalculation, not a mistake.

Richard Gere and Cindy Crawford

Richard Gere and Cindy Crawford

It’s often been said that Crawford was Gere’s Pretty Woman—sans being an escort. They met at a barbeque when Cindy was 22 and starstruck. They married 1991, but by 1995, they were officially over.

The rumor mill went beserk, claiming it was a publicity stunt and that there were extramaritial affairs. Cindy later addressed the controversy stating that they didn’t spend enough time together and that the age difference was a factor.

Halle Berry and David Justice

Halle Berry and David Justice

Halle Berry’s first marriage was to Major League Baseball player David Justice, formerly of Braves fame and later Yankees. The pair said “I do” at 1:30 a.m. January 1, 1993, but they split in 1996 when Halle filed a restraining order against David. It was a difficult divorce, and there were rumors of physical abuse. 

Halle has gone on to marry twice more. Justice acknowledged a passionate marriage but set the record straight that he never harmed or laid a hand on Berry.

Jennifer Garner and Scott Foley

Long before Jennifer was 13 Going on 30 and Ben’s almost-forever partner, Jennifer was married to Scandal hunk Scott Foley. They met on the set of Felicity in 1997, wed in October 2000, and separated by March 2003.

Jen credits Scott with being a really good guy; their marriage just never had a shot.

Ali “Doritos Girl” Landry’s first claim to fame was eating chips, but a close second was her fleeting marriage to Mario for less than two weeks in 2004. They had the marriage annulled after Mario publicly copped to having cheated on her before the wedding.

Mario claims not to have understood the commitment, nor was he really ready for the expectations of marriage.

Tom Cruise and Mimi Rogers

Before Nicole and Katie, there was Mimi. They were married in 1987 in a small, secret ceremony in upstate New York—which provided plenty of tabloid fodder for the new couple. Rogers was the ex-wife of scientologist Jim Rogers, and was well-known for her exes (Tom Selleck and Christopher Reeve) while Tom was still negotiating his way through Hollywood.

They announced their intent to divorce in 1990. It’s been reported that Mimi is the one who introduced Tom to Scientology, although she’s no longer practicing.

The Jurassic Park founder and the Thelma & Louise bombshell met on the set of their movie, Transylvania 6-5000 (Google it), and went on to appear in two more films together: The Fly and Earth Girls Are Easy.

The acting duo got married in Vegas in 1987. But wedded bliss was short-lived, and Geena filed for divorce in 1990 citing the oft used ‘irreconcilable differences’.

Nicolas Cage and Lisa Marie Presley

Nicolas wed Elvis Presley’s daughter, Lisa Marie, not long after the ink on his divorce decree to Patricia dried. Lisa Marie had previously been married to Michael Jackson.

Nicolas filed for divorce in 2002 after three months of marriage. “I’m sad about this, but we shouldn’t have been married in the first place,” Lisa Marie said in a statement at the time.

Renée and Kenny met on the set of NBC’s Concert of Hope tsunami aid telethon, and dating quickly ensued. They kept the romance under wraps until April, when she handed Chesney a margarita during a concert (google it). Their marriage lasted only four brief months in 2005, but the couple raised eyebrows when Renée cited “fraud” as the reason for their separation and annulment.

Rumors of financial fraud, bad behavior, and a host of other unsavory conclusions led to another statement noting, "the miscommunication of the objective at the start is the only reason for the annulment." Chesney claims that he just wasn’t ready to be married. Yep, it’s still a head-scratcher today.

Hopper, who was married and divorced five times in his life, reportedly joked later, "seven of those days were pretty good. The eighth day was the bad one," according to the New York Daily News.

Only three days after finalizing her divorce from Sonny Bono in 1975, Cher married southern rock musician Gregg Allman. After nine days of haze, heroin, and liquor on Allman’s part, Cher had enough and filed for divorce from him.

Luckily for Gregg, Cher believed in love and gave him a second chance—remarrying him, bearing his son, producing an album, and ultimately, divorcing again.

She later became Mrs. Bruce Willis and Mrs. Ashton Kutcher (although not at the same time), although she still to this day has kept Freddy's last name.

It’s not the only time Jolie has sealed a marriage with blood. Angelina and Jonny divorced in 2000.

Nic worked his way through the list over the years and another chance encounter in the same deli sealed their fate. They said “I do” in 1995 and divorced in 2001.

Tom doesn’t talk about the marriage and hasn’t kept in touch with Drew other than to say that he wishes it could have worked and wished her much happiness.

Lauren credits the paparazzi and media attention for their divorce, stating that the constant attention and rumors were difficult for her. She does claim that some of her best memories were of their courtship.

Will and Sheree were married from 1992 to 1995, and they share a son, Trey. Will met Jada while married to Sheree, and thus, a match was made on A Different World.

Sheree is part of the Smiths' large, blended family, and she’s quick to point out that youth, not infidelity, played a part in their divorce. Zampino is also quick to note that people were intimidated by her previous relationship and it was hard to meet a fella.
