Actor from Murder in a Small Town TV Series Found Murdered in a Small Town

A search for a missing Canadian television actor has come to a tragic conclusion in British Columbia. Stewart “Stew” McLean, 45, has been confirmed dead following a week-long disappearance, and authorities are now treating the case as an active homicide investigation.

The Disappearance and Discovery

McLean, a resident of the small coastal community of Lions Bay—located roughly 20 miles north of Vancouver—was last seen alive at his home on Friday, May 15, 2026. After three days with no contact, a missing person report was formally filed with the Squamish Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) on Monday, May 18.

As the local police's initial inquiry progressed, investigators uncovered undisclosed evidence pointing toward foul play. Because of these findings, Canada’s specialized Integrated Homicide Investigation Team (IHIT) stepped in on May 20 to spearhead the case, working alongside the Integrated Forensic Identification Service (IFIS).

On Friday, May 22, IHIT officials announced that search teams had discovered McLean’s remains within the Lions Bay area.

The Ongoing Investigation

Law enforcement has provided few details regarding the physical circumstances of the crime. The exact cause of death, potential motives, and possible suspects remain unknown to the public. However, authorities have emphasized that they view this tragedy as an isolated incident, meaning there is no broader threat to public safety.

Detectives are currently focused on constructing a comprehensive timeline of McLean's movements leading up to his disappearance. Cpl. Esther Tupper of IHIT issued a public statement regarding their current efforts:

“Homicide investigators are working to collect and analyze evidence, review CCTV footage, and conduct interviews to build a timeline of Mr. McLean’s activities prior to May 15, 2026. We are pursuing all available leads as we work to find answers for the family, friends, and loved ones of Mr. McLean.”

Industry Mourns a "Endlessly Funny" Colleague

Standing 5 feet 10 inches tall, weighing 150 pounds, with blue eyes and grey hair, McLean was a familiar face within the closely-knit British Columbia filming community. His professional acting and producing credits date back to 2015, frequently taking him to regional filming hubs like Squamish and Bowen Island.

Ironically, given the title of his real-life tragedy, McLean's television resume included an appearance on the Canadian dramatic series Murder in a Small Town. Most recently, he appeared as a barfly in a March 2026 episode of the hit Netflix romance drama Virgin River. His other notable television appearances included roles on Arrow, Travelers, Beyond, and Happy Face.

Following the news of his death, his longtime representative, Jodi Caplan of Lucas Talent Inc., shared a heartfelt tribute on social media, reflecting the shock felt across the industry:

"I was fortunate to have worked with Stew for more than 10 years. He was always such a pleasure to deal with — dedicated, professional, eager, and endlessly funny! Many casting directors have reached out to share their condolences... and every message says the same thing: what a truly great guy he was, and how deeply he will be missed."
