Actors Who Suffered Life-Changing Injuries While Filming

Actors are sometimes criticized for having one of the cushiest jobs in the world, but if you’re an actor who performs your own stunts, you are definitely working hard for your paycheck! Despite all the safety regulations and on-set advisors, accidents still happen. While many of these injuries are thankfully minor, more serious incidents can leave folks on set with life-threatening injuries. 

Today, we’re taking a look at actors who were infamously injured on set. From action movies to classic family films, you might be surprised at exactly where danger pops up in Hollywood!

Christopher Reeve

Christopher Reeve

Christopher Reeve, the iconic actor best known for his role as Superman, experienced a life-altering accident on May 27, 1995. While participating in an equestrian competition in Culpeper, Virginia, Reeve was thrown from his horse, Buck, after the animal refused a jump. The fall caused Reeve to land headfirst, fracturing his first and second cervical vertebrae. This catastrophic injury left him paralyzed from the neck down and completely derailed him at the height of his career.

Despite the immense challenges, Reeve became a symbol of resilience and advocacy. He dedicated his life to raising awareness and funds for spinal cord injury research, founding the Christopher & Dana Reeve Foundation. His efforts inspired advancements in medical research and provided hope to countless individuals with disabilities.

Tom Cruise

Tom Cruise

Tom Cruise, famous for performing his own stunts, has sustained several injuries while filming action movies. During Mission: Impossible – Fallout, he broke his ankle leaping between buildings but finished the shot before pausing production. In The Last Samurai, he narrowly avoided a fatal accident when a mechanical horse malfunctioned, almost causing a co-star’s sword to strike him.

Other injuries include bruises and strain from wearing a heavy exosuit in Edge of Tomorrow and the physical toll of scaling the Burj Khalifa in Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol. Even in Top Gun: Maverick, he endured the intense demands of high-speed aerial stunts. Cruise’s relentless commitment to realism has solidified his reputation as one of Hollywood’s most fearless action stars.

Jackie Chan

Jackie Chan

Jackie Chan, who is no stranger to crazy stunts, has sustained numerous injuries throughout his legendary career. Known for performing all his own work, he has broken nearly every bone in his body. While filming Armour of God, Chan suffered a life-threatening skull fracture after a fall from a tree, requiring emergency brain surgery. In Police Story, he dislocated his pelvis and severely burned his hands sliding down a pole covered in lights.

Other serious injuries include a broken ankle during Rumble in the Bronx, which he continued filming with a cast disguised as a shoe, and a near-fatal neck injury in Project A. Chan’s fearless dedication to his craft has made him an action icon. Still, he has not been kind to his body.

George Clooney

George Clooney

While filming Syriana in 2005, George Clooney suffered a severe spinal injury during a stunt gone wrong. In a scene where his character is tied to a chair and thrown to the ground, Clooney hit his head, causing a tear in his dura mater, the membrane surrounding the spinal cord. The injury led to debilitating pain, spinal fluid leakage, and severe migraines, leaving him bedridden for weeks.

The ordeal required multiple surgeries to repair the damage, and Clooney later admitted the experience left him contemplating his career and even his life. Despite the injuries, he completed the film, earning an Academy Award for his performance. Clooney’s resilience through the injury highlighted his dedication to his craft, even when his health was on the line.

Dylan O’Brien

Dylan O’Brien

Dylan O’Brien sustained serious and painful injuries while filming Maze Runner: The Death Cure during a high-speed stunt gone wrong. In a scene involving a moving vehicle, O’Brien was struck and dragged, resulting in a concussion, facial fractures, and other potentially fatal injuries. The accident halted production for months as he underwent extensive recovery.

The physical and emotional toll of the incident left O’Brien questioning his return to acting. However, he eventually resumed filming and completed the movie, crediting the support of his cast, crew, and fans for his recovery. Who wouldn’t be shaken after something as painful and terrifying as this?

Linda Hamilton

Linda Hamilton

During filming for Terminator 2: Judgment Day, Linda Hamilton sustained several injuries due to the intense action sequences. However, the worst was definitely during a scene in the elevator where her character fires a shotgun. Hamilton wasn’t wearing ear protection, and the deafening gunfire caused permanent hearing loss in one ear. 
 

Additionally, Hamilton endured physical strain from the rigorous stunts and training required to portray the tough, battle-hardened Sarah Connor. Despite these challenges, her commitment to the role helped solidify her performance as one of the most iconic action heroines in film history.

Charlize Theron

Charlize Theron

Charlize Theron starred in the 2005 sci-fi action film Aeon Flux. In the movie, she portrayed a futuristic rebel fighting against a dystopian regime, showcasing her physicality and commitment to intense action sequences. Theron, an Academy Award-winning actress, has built a reputation for taking on challenging roles, often performing her own stunts to bring authenticity to her characters.

During the filming of Aeon Flux, Theron suffered a serious neck injury while performing a backflip stunt. The accident caused a herniated disc, which temporarily halted production and required her to undergo extensive physical therapy. Despite the setback, Theron recovered and completed the film.

Jason Statham

Jason Statham

Jason Statham has faced several injuries throughout his career in action movies. His commitment to authenticity often puts him in physically demanding and risky situations. While filming The Expendables 3, Statham had a close call when a stunt involving a truck went wrong. The vehicle's brakes failed, and it plunged into the Black Sea with Statham inside. Fortunately, his diving background allowed him to escape unharmed, but the incident highlighted the dangers of his work.

In addition to near-misses, Statham has sustained minor injuries during fight scenes and stunts in films like The Transporter and Crank. These include bruises, cuts, and muscle strains, which are almost inevitable given the intensity of his roles.

Margaret Hamilton

Margaret Hamilton, the actress who famously portrayed the Wicked Witch of the West in The Wizard of Oz, delivered one of cinema’s most iconic villainous performances. Her role required her to embody the menacing and magical character, complete with dramatic makeup, a green complexion, and fiery special effects. However, the production was not without its dangers, and Hamilton endured a serious injury during filming.

In one memorable scene, the Wicked Witch vanishes in a burst of flames. During the take, a trapdoor malfunctioned, and Hamilton was exposed to the pyrotechnics, suffering second-degree burns on her face and third-degree burns on her hand. The accident required her to take several weeks off to recover. Despite the ordeal, Hamilton returned to complete the film, but it instilled a lifelong fear of fire in her as well.

Halle Berry

Halle Berry has sustained several injuries during her career, reflecting her commitment to physically demanding roles. One notable incident occurred while filming the James Bond movie Die Another Day. During an action sequence, Berry was struck in the eye by debris, requiring medical attention. Fortunately, she recovered quickly and continued filming.

Another significant injury happened on the set of Catwoman, where she broke her arm while performing a stunt. Additionally, while filming Gothika, Berry fractured her arm during a scene with co-star Robert Downey Jr. when a physical interaction went wrong.

Sylvester Stallone

Sylvester Stallone

Sylvester Stallone is not a stranger to pushing his body to the limit on set. He has sustained numerous injuries throughout his career. One of his most serious injuries occurred during the filming of Rocky IV. While shooting the climactic fight scene with Dolph Lundgren, Stallone insisted on real punches to make the action more authentic. Lundgren delivered a powerful blow to Stallone’s chest, causing his heart to slam against his ribcage, which led to swelling and a trip to the ICU for several days.

Stallone also faced injuries on the set of The Expendables, where he broke his neck during a fight scene with Steve Austin. The injury required surgery and the insertion of a metal plate. Over the years, Stallone has endured countless other injuries, including torn tendons, broken ribs, and spinal damage, all in the name of delivering high-octane performances. Michael J. Fox

Michael J. Fox

While filming Back to the Future Part III, Michael J. Fox experienced a frightening on-set injury during a scene where his character, Marty McFly, is hanged by the villain Buford "Mad Dog" Tannen. In one take, the noose was accidentally tightened too much, and Fox briefly lost consciousness. Fortunately, Fox recovered quickly and completed the film, almost as if he had never been accidentally executed! 

Years later, Fox’s career faced a significant challenge when he was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease in 1991 at just 29 years old. Despite this, Fox continued to work, often incorporating his condition into his roles, such as in Spin City and later guest appearances.

Jaimie Alexander

Jaimie Alexander

Jaimie Alexander, who played Lady Sif in Thor: The Dark World, suffered a serious injury while filming the Marvel blockbuster. During a rainy morning on set, Alexander slipped on a metal staircase, resulting in a significant fall. The accident caused her to dislocate a shoulder, chip 11 vertebrae, and slip a disc in her spine. Additionally, she tore a rhomboid muscle, leaving her in immense pain and temporarily unable to walk.

The injuries required Alexander to take a month-long break from filming to recover. Despite the severity of the accident, she returned to complete her role but was plagued by lingering pain for quite a while afterward.

Uma Thurman

Uma Thurman

Uma Thurman sustained significant injuries while filming Kill Bill: Vol. 2 due to a controversial on-set incident. During the production, director Quentin Tarantino insisted she perform a driving scene herself, despite her concerns about the car's safety. The vehicle was reportedly not in ideal condition, and the road was uneven and sandy. While filming, Thurman lost control of the car, crashing into a palm tree. The accident left her with permanent neck and knee injuries.

Thurman later revealed that the incident caused her both physical and emotional pain as she felt pressured into performing the stunt. Years later, Tarantino publicly expressed regret over the situation, and Thurman shared the footage of the crash to highlight the risks actors sometimes face on set.

Orlando Bloom

Orlando Bloom

While he wasn’t injured on set, Orlando Bloom suffered a severe back injury in 1998 that would drastically affect his acting career, years before his rise to fame in The Lord of the Rings and Pirates of the Caribbean franchises. While climbing a rooftop terrace with friends, Bloom fell three stories and fractured his spine. Initially, doctors feared he might never walk again. However, after undergoing surgery to insert metal plates and screws into his spine, Bloom made a remarkable recovery, regaining his ability to walk within weeks.

The experience profoundly impacted Bloom’s outlook on life and his career. He has often spoken about how the injury taught him to appreciate his physical abilities and motivated him to pursue his acting dreams with greater determination. Despite lingering back pain, Bloom went on to perform many physically demanding roles, including the action-heavy parts of Legolas in The Lord of the Rings and Will Turner in Pirates of the Caribbean
