All the Juicy Details From the Johnny Depp and Amber Heard Trial

The Mind Games are Intense

The Mind Games are Intense

One of the strangest things about this case has been the mind games. Amber Heard, in particular, began copying Johnny Depp’s outfits. Depp wore a gray suit, and then Amber Heard wore a gray suit the next day.

That may have been a coincidence, but the next day Depp wore a Gucci bee, which he attached to his tie. Then, Amber Heard wore a Gucci bee pin as well right after. This is a little too on-the-nose to ignore.

Finally, Amber Heard has been seen copying hairstyles in court. Depp put his hair up in a ponytail, and Heard wore a ponytail the next day. Heard also put her hair up in the same way as one of the psychologists who testified.

Mind games or nah?

Depp's Detox

Depp's Detox

Depp’s testimony was shocking, and that still feels like an understatement. It’s hard to believe some of the stuff that he’s been through, specifically with Heard.

One of the moments that made the world pause was when he was talking about his detox.

Depp went to his island with Heard, Dr. Kipper, and nurse Debbie Lloyd. Heard convinced Depp’s medical team to allow her to administer medication as Depp began to detox from taking Roxicodone. When it came time, however, Heard refused to give it.

Depp testified that he could go through seizures and have serious medical issues, but Heard kept claiming that it “wasn’t time.” He began to beg her, but ultimately, he went for a scalding hot shower to keep himself from being in pain. Just wow.

Heard Has a Bad History in Relationships

Heard Has a Bad History in Relationships

Way before Heard and Depp were a couple, Heard was with a woman named Tasya van Ree.

The two were pretty serious. So much so that Amber took her last name and became Amber van Ree.

Well, one day they were at the Seattle-Tacoma International Airport, and they got in a super-heated fight. This ended with Amber being arrested and charged with misdemeanor domestic violence.

Heard was removed from the airport, booked, and she ended up having to go to court. Yikes. They split, Heard changed her name back, and for some reason, the two remained good friends.

Depp’s Past Relationships…

Depp’s Past Relationships…

We already know somewhat about Depp’s past relationships.

His first wife was Lori Anne Allison, who has come out publicly in support for her ex-husband. She stated that he was a “soft person” and that he wouldn’t hurt a fly.

Then there’s Kate Moss, who was even brought up in the trial. Amber Heard recalled the rumors that Depp pushed her down the stairs. Moss hasn’t commented on the stairs incident, but she has mentioned that there was “nobody that’s ever really been able to take care of me” like Johnny did.

Finally, there’s Winona Ryder and Vanessa Paradis (the mother of his children). Both have said that Depp was “never violent” toward them, although Depp has certainly destroyed a hotel room or two in a fit of rage. According to the court, Depp has also called Paradis a “French extortionist wh*re.”

Speaking of Moss…

Speaking of Moss…

Johnny’s attorneys really couldn’t bring Kate Moss in until Heard and her team “opened the door,” so to speak.

Immediately after mentioning Moss, Depp’s attorneys clearly got excited, and we got to see why. Moss was called to testify.

Her testimony lasted all of three minutes, mostly because she could only bring up the stairs incident. All in all, she said Depp didn't abuse her or push her down the stairs.

All in all, this spells pretty bad news for Heard’s team since Moss is very clearly on Depp’s side.

They’re Both Violent Toward Each Other

They’re Both Violent Toward Each Other

It’s been made very clear that they’ve both been very violent toward each other. A joint statement was released during their divorce that their relationship “was intensely passionate and at times volatile, but always bound by love.”

The couple’s therapist, Lauren Anderson, discussed how they were abusive toward each other. She explained that Heard “gave as good as she got,” and that Heard told her “she felt she had to hit him back if he hit her so she always did.”

This was later confirmed by Travis McGivern, who is Depp’s security. He explained how one evening while Depp was leaving Penthouse 5, both were "arguing like usual."

According to McGivern, Heard spit at Depp, threw Redbull cans at him, and punched him.

Depp Opened Up About His Traumatic Childhood

Depp Opened Up About His Traumatic Childhood

During his testimony, we all learned about his childhood. Depp described his late mother, Betty Sue Palmer, as “violent” and “cruel” toward him. He also admitted to being physically abused by her.

Depp also explained that his substance abuse wasn’t “for the party effect,” but rather to “numb the things inside” from the trauma he experienced.

Along with that, he compared his childhood abuse to the abuse from Amber Heard. Depp explained how he would hide from Heard just like he did when his mother went on a rampage.

This was his attempt to deescalate the situation as she followed him from room to room—something Depp’s nurse Debbie Lloyd attested was true.

Bruises or Botox?

Bruises or Botox?

Heard has happily shown the court the bruises Depp had given her, stating that he gave her two black eyes multiple times, and even brutally broke her nose.

The only issue with this is that her nose hasn’t ever really looked too busted, even when she went on national TV the day after he busted her nose.

The bruising Depp allegedly left her with has also been her “smoking gun” evidence. Only, some people are spotting a few issues with that. Namely, it looks like bruising after someone gets botox or fillers.

There’s been a lot of experts that have weighed in, but it’s impossible to not see how it looks so very similar. Plus, there’s the fact that her nose had little to no swelling, which would be clear when she appeared on TV the following night.

Amber Fired Her Whole PR Team

Amber Fired Her Whole PR Team

Guess Heard wasn’t too happy with the headlines heavily favoring Johnny Depp over herself. Heard responded by firing her entire PR team – and we mean everyone.

In their place, Heard hired none other than David Shane, who has a history of smearing Depp’s name.

The guy got started immediately. In fact, he couldn’t even wait until he was out of court. The court police noticed Shane with his phone out not once, not twice, but three times!

For anyone that’s not been in court, having your phone out is a big no-no. This isn’t the first time someone on her side was kicked out. Eve Barlow was also thrown out of court for being on her phone during proceedings.

They Addressed Those Text Messages…

They Addressed Those Text Messages…

When Heard’s lawyers cross-examined Depp’s childhood friend Isaac Baruch, they read his text exchanges with Depp. In one text from 2016, Depp said he “hoped that Amber’s rotting corpse is decomposing in the f**king trunk of a Honda Civic.”

Depp also clearly (but still allegedly) loves referring to Heard as the c-word. He texted Baruch, “That c*** ruined such a f***ing cool life we had for a while.” He also sent a text to Sir Elton John, where he referred to the actress as “a French extortionist c**t.”

While being cross-examined, Depp claimed the harsh language found in his text messages was nothing more than a “reflection of his dark humor.”

He went on: “If you’re writing, there is no set place that you have to stay in, you can travel. And sometimes pain has to be dealt with with humor—and sometimes dark, very dark humor.”

Later, Even More Texts Were Released…

Later, Even More Texts Were Released…

The jury was shown a pre-recorded deposition from Dr. David Kipper, who treated Depp’s opioid addiction in May 2014.

During this, Kipper was asked about any texts he’d received from Depp, and he explained there was one where he repeatedly referenced heard as “full of sh*t as a Christmas Goose."

The text went on to read, “‘I’m done. NO MORE!!!! Constant insults released from a malicious evil and vindictive c*nt!!!!! You know what’s far more hurtful than her venomous and degrading educational ranting??? Her hideously and purposely hurtful tirades and her god*mn shocking treatment of the man she was meant to love above all.”

Depp got even more in-depth, “Here’s the real deal mate…her obsession with herself is far more important. She is so f*cking ambitious!!!! She’s so desperate for success and fame. That’s probably why I was acquired, mate. She has hammered me with what a sad old man has been I am.”

Makeup Company Milani Did Not Ask to Be Part of This Narrative

Makeup Company Milani Did Not Ask to Be Part of This Narrative

This is where things really get crazy—we’re talking TikTok-conspiracy-theory crazy.

Heard’s lawyers claim she used Milani’s All-in-One Correcting Kit to cover her alleged injuries—they even went so far as to say she kept it “in her purse at all times.”

However, the makeup company released a TikTok video stating that that specific product wasn’t released until 2017—one year after Heard sought a domestic violence restraining order against him and filed for divorce.

And that’s not all! TikToker Nuha (devotedly.yours) delivered the makeup “evidence” to Depp’s lawyers via email and followed up with a trip to the courthouse to ensure they were privy to the information!

A Few A-List Actors Are Set to Testify

A Few A-List Actors Are Set to Testify

A whole slew of famous names were slated to take the stand during the highly publicized trial—including Jason Momoa, Elon Musk, James Franco, and Paul Bettany. And they were all on the list for very different reasons...

Depp sent Paul Bettany texts all the way back in 2013—before he and Heard married— that read “Let’s burn Amber!!! Let’s drown her before we burn her!!!” He then followed up those texts with an even darker one: “I will f**k her burnt corpse afterward to make sure she is dead.”

Although Franco and Musk originally appeared on Heard’s witness list (Heard testified that Franco “saw my face, and he said, ‘what the f**k’” after Depp allegedly threw a phone at her, while the doorman at Depp and Heard’s LA home provided a statement claiming Musk would “always visit when Mr. Depp was not at home” in 2015), rumor has it both men are refusing to take the stand.

Why didn't they testify? Probably because Heard's team wasted their time. Stars like Elon Musk were set to testify as early as day one when the paperwork was submitted. That meant we didn't get to hear what any of these stars had to say.

Heard Weaponized Depp’s Children

Heard Weaponized Depp’s Children

As we’ve mentioned before, Amber Heard has weaponized Depp’s relationship with his children. She’d say things like, “I hope to god Jack’s stepfather teaches him more about being a man,” and things like that.

Lily-Rose, Depp’s oldest child, wrote a letter to the court describing the relationship between Heard and her father. She stated how she didn’t appreciate the way Heard treated her father.

Depp’s relationship with his children became nonexistent by the end of the pair’s relationship.

The children didn’t agree with the marriage, and Lily-Rose refused to attend the wedding.

Amber Heard’s Personality Disorder

Amber Heard’s Personality Disorder

Dr. Shannon Curry, a clinical and forensic psychologist hired by Depp, went in-depth about Amber Heard. She explained how Heard shows signs of borderline personality disorders.

She testified that the code type for Heard’s personality disorder is “three and six.”

When asked about the characteristics of these codes, Dr. Curry explained, “so a 3 & 6 code type – a lot of that anger is expressed in that code type. There can be actually a lot of cruelty…Actually, when you see this code type, you want to if you can, follow up with subordinates, coworkers, people who may have observed their behavior more closely. “

She continued saying, “The 3 & 6 code type is very concerned with their image. Very attention-seeking. Very prone to externalizing blame to a point where it’s unclear whether they can even admit to themselves that they do have responsibility in certain areas. A lot of suppressed and denied anger, but the anger is very present and will explode out and a lot of issues in their close relationships.”

Depp Denied All of Heard’s Claims

Depp Denied All of Heard’s Claims

Depp described his ex-wife’s allegations of abuse as “heinous and disturbing” and declared that “nothing of the kind ever happened.”

He said he felt compelled to file the defamation suit because "since I knew that there was no truth to [Heard's claims] whatsoever, I felt it my responsibility to stand up not only for myself in that instance, but stand up for my children. I wanted to clear my children of this horrid thing that they were having to read about their father, which was untrue."

In fact, the actor addressed his character around women beyond his clearly toxic marriage to Heard:

“Never did I myself reach the point of striking Ms. Heard in any way, nor have I ever struck any woman in my life.”

The Real Reason Everyone’s Calling Her Amber Turd

The Real Reason Everyone’s Calling Her Amber Turd

According to Depp’s testimony, after an explosive fight (which he cites as the moment he decided to end the marriage), he left to stay at another one of his houses. He knew Heard would be flying out to Coachella, so he planned to return home to gather his things—but stopped when his housekeeper sent him a photo…

“It was a photograph of our bed,” Depp said. “On my side of the bed was human fecal matter. So, I understood why it wasn’t a good time to go down there. My initial response was, I mean, I laughed. It was so outside, it was so bizarre and so grotesque that I could only laugh.”

While Heard claims Depp’s two dogs were responsible for the mess, Depp maintained that “the dogs are teacup Yorkies. They weigh about four pounds each…

"I mean, I lived with those dogs for many years and so did Hilda Vargas [Depp’s housekeeper], she’s a woman who’s been with me for 30 plus years from the very beginning. She was the one who photographed it. It was clear, she knew the dogs as well as I did. That did not come from a dog, it just didn’t.”

Those Around the Pair Testified…

Those Around the Pair Testified…

Several people have testified that the pair were abusive toward each other, including those who worked in the buildings where their penthouses were. Isaac Baruch, Depp’s childhood friend, stated that Depp allowed him to live rent-free in their L.A. penthouse while he focused on his art.

He stated that Heard’s claims were a “malicious lie,” and he’d never witnessed any violence between the two. That being said, he also said that both sides are exhausted from the fighting. During his emotional testimony, he stated he wanted each side to take responsibility and heal.

Alejandro Romero worked the front desk of the East Colombia building, and he often saw Heard and Depp. He was asked whether he saw Heard with bruises and he admitted he had not.

This was the same testimony where Romero began smoking and driving away, making him an instant star. The judge admitted she’d never seen a testimony like that before.

Johnny Depp’s Substance and Alcohol Use

Johnny Depp’s Substance and Alcohol Use

A lot of focus has been placed on Depp’s substance use. It’s something he’s had problems with in the past, so it was naturally an issue in the relationship – something several witnesses have testified about. Travis McGivern (Depp’s Security) was asked what substances he saw Depp use, and he admitted marijuana and cocaine.

We’ve also all seen the videos of Depp drinking, drunk, and slamming things around the house. Along the way, he called Amber Heard every name under the sun. During the attorney, he also found his alcohol use somewhat comedic when an attorney asked about him drinking a “mega-pint.”

Depp’s personal nurse also went over how the couple took a trip to the Bahamas to give Depp the chance to detox from Roxicodone, an addiction he’d developed during the relationship.

This was when Amber Heard took the infamous ice cream photo. Depp claimed he was just tired during the photo.

Heard Allegedly Admitted to Hitting Depp

Heard Allegedly Admitted to Hitting Depp

Amber Heard has submitted plenty of video evidence against Depp, displaying his violent episodes.

During one video—and it's important to point out that she never got his consent before filming him—he’s shown slamming cabinet doors, kicking furniture, throwing things, and hurting himself while shouting curse words. Depp was very clearly drunk during this video.

The jury also heard a video where Depp threatened to cut himself with a knife after finding out that Heard was recording allegedly without Depp’s consent.

During one of these recordings, Heard also admitted to hitting Depp. She’s heard saying, “You didn’t get punched. You got hit. I’m sorry I hit you like this, I didn’t punch you. I did not f*cking deck you. I f*cking was hitting you.” She then called Depp a “f*cking baby” and that he should “grow the f*ck up.”

TMZ and the Mysterious Video

TMZ and the Mysterious Video

Speaking of the cabinet-slamming video, we have to mention that it’s copyrighted by TMZ. Why is that important? It’s clearly a private video.

The video was mysteriously sent to the paparazzi company from an anonymous source using a DropBox type source, basically to avoid it being traced back.

The video sent to TMZ cut off Amber Heard setting up the camera as well as her running off and seemingly smirking at the end.

We know this info because the person on-call at the time at TMZ had to testify (although TMZ did the best to block the person from taking the stand). This was pretty damning for Heard.

TMZ Tried Their Best to Hide Evidence

TMZ Tried Their Best to Hide Evidence

The guy who testified for TMZ, Morgan Tremaine, almost didn’t have the chance to say where the video came from (which was absolutely huge, by the way).

Lawyers for TMZ filed an injunction in the middle of the night and showed up in court the next day to prevent Tremaine from testifying.

The emergency motion was presented to the judge (just before lunch), and she wasn’t hearing any of it. She was 100% done, and that much was clear.

The TMZ attorney was basically told that Tremaine was going to testify. Of course, she did it respectfully by saying she “appreciates” him coming in, but they had no right to stop Tremaine from testifying.

Celebrities Taking Sides

Celebrities Taking Sides

Celebrities are now coming out of the woodworks to support one side over the other. Interesting they’re coming out now that the results are out.

This can include as much as an actual statement released by their PR team to liking their social media posts. That may not seem like a lot but taking a stand at all is pretty crazy.

Depp clearly has more people in his court including Jason Momoa, Zoe Saldana, Jennifer Aniston, Jo Rogan, Amanda Knox, Norman Reedus, Winona Ryder, and so many more. The list is honestly endless.

On Heard’s side, she also has Jason Momoa – clearly, he’s trying to remain impartial. Lena Headey, Kate Nash, Selma Blair, Edward Norton, Howard Stern, and Amy Schumer have also joined her side.

Dr. Spiegel’s Hilarious Testimony

Dr. Spiegel’s Hilarious Testimony

So far, there’s been quite a few characters put on the stand during this trial. One of those was Dr. Spiegel who seemed very...hyped up?

It didn’t get crazy until Depp’s attorneys started cross-examining him. That was when he started to get mad and began arguing with the attorneys and the judge.

Apparently, he’d diagnosed Depp using interviews he’d seen and his movies – yes, his movies. This is when it gets funny. Depp’s attorney asked if Dr. Spiegel had seen Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.

The Doc furiously looked at the judge. “Do I have to answer that?” The judge replied coolly, “yes, you have to answer questions.”

Depp’s Work Has Been Affected…

Depp’s Work Has Been Affected…

We well know that Depp has been released from all of his contracts including Disney’s Pirates of the Caribbean – a movie he’s starred in since 2003. After being fired, he testified, “I would be a real simpleton to not think that there was an effect on my career based on Ms. Heard’s words, whether they mentioned my name or not.”

Because Depp feels let down by Disney, he testified that he wouldn’t return to Disney.  Rottenborn asked, “If Disney came to you with $300 million and a million alpacas, nothing on this earth would get you to go back and work with Disney on a Pirates of the Caribbean film? Correct?”

Depp responded, “That is true Mr. Rottenborn.” It seems like Depp is 120% done with Disney. The only company that’s stuck with Depp through all this is Dior Sauvage, who he’s been with since 2015.

It was testified by Jack Whigham that getting Depp work after the Op-Ed was impossible. This is a big reason the case has been brought to the courts.

Heard's Work Hasn’t Been Affected…

Heard's Work Hasn’t Been Affected…

On the other hand, Amber Heard hasn’t lost much at all. Amber Heard is set to appear in Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom. Many fans are demanding that she be removed from the movie, and some have even gone so far as to sign a petition to remove her.

The petition to have her fired from Aquaman 2 has soared to over 4.55 million signatures, but the director has stated they refuse to fire her. They’ve stated they don’t want to succumb to Twitter rages, but we all know it’s far beyond that.

An insider has stated that Heard hasn’t been removed from the film, but her screen time has been drastically cut.

According to this insider, she’ll only appear for 10 minutes, but this hasn’t been confirmed just yet. Amber herself stated she's been released from her contract.

It All Started with the Op-Ed

It All Started with the Op-Ed

Amber Heard released an opinion piece, an Op-Ed, where she claimed she was a victim of physical and emotional abuse. During this piece, she described what he’d done without explicitly naming Depp as the abuser.

However, she stated how she represented domestic abuse “two years ago” which would be around the same time the divorce started between the two. This led to Depp being referred to as a “wife-beater” by The Sun, which was what the UK libel case was about.

The ACLU came out and said that the Washington Post Op-Ed was intended to promote Aquaman, which was set to release around the same time.

Heard was also set to donate proceeds from promoting the movie, which she hadn’t done. She donated $1.3 million, but that was done so with Elon Musk’s help.

The Three-Day “Hostage” Situation According to Heard…

The Three-Day “Hostage” Situation According to Heard…

The now-infamous incident in Australia in 2015 was where Depp’s finger mysteriously became injured—we say "mysteriously" because there are many confusing versions of the story. During this trip, Amber Heard stated that Depp jammed her against the bar, hurled bottles at her, and “dragged her across the floor on the broken bottles.” She also said he punched her, kicked her, and said he was going to "[end] her.”

The first way Heard stated his finger was injured was because he’d punched the wall. The second time was the infamous phone breaking – when he’d noticed her recording and threw the phone so hard it came back and busted his finger.

The third time she changed her story, she stated she woke up and noticed the injury, meaning she had no idea how it happened. Finally, she said he cut it off himself with a knife during one of his drunken states.

Regardless, following the finger injury, Depp began to scrawl all over the walls with his bleeding finger, writing awful, sometimes cryptic messages.

The “Hostage” Situation from Depp’s Point of View…

The “Hostage” Situation from Depp’s Point of View…

Depp claims none of that happened. He states that he didn’t abuse her at all, and instead, his finger was severed by Heard. During the Australia trip, he says Heard was angry about him drinking, so she threw one of his bottles.

He grabbed another, which she promptly threw. This one came in contact with his finger, smashing it against the marble bar. Depp stated, “the tip of my finger had been severed, and I was looking directly at my bone sticking out.”

This was later corroborated by Dr. Kipper, during a call where he said Heard “shattered the bone.” In addition to this, the ER statements also agreed it wasn’t cut, but injured from a “crushing mechanism.”

As for the messages written on the wall, he agreed that he began to use his blood as paint. He said he said he “started” to write about the “lies that I had caught [Heard] in on the walls.”

Heard Finally Took the Stand

Heard Finally Took the Stand

The moment we’ve all been waiting for finally happened – Amber Laura Heard took the stand. We got to hear her story from her own mouth, and it was…something.

A lot of people have noticed how she’s overacting and bringing up the most obscure things like how she remembered the dirty carpet or a light while being abused.

Not to mention, when she’s telling a story, it doesn’t add up. For example, in one of her testimonies, she says “I lost my balance” then seconds later “we were sitting on the couch, I was sitting on the edge of the couch,” followed up by, “how did I end up on this dirty carpet?”

Overall, it just doesn’t add up. Couple that with her bringing up ridiculous things like, “My dog stepped on a bee,” people are saying that she’s purely acting…badly. Depp’s own attorneys put out a statement saying Heard was putting on the “acting performance of her life.”

Depp’s Second Testimony

Depp’s Second Testimony

Near the end, Depp’s side made sure to keep ample time so they could dominate the finale of the trial (and that they did).

Depp took the stand a second time and things got really wild. Depp and Heard’s attorneys seemed to go head-to-head, despite the fact his attorneys were the ones questioning him.

Every time Rottenborn (Heard’s attorney) objected, Depp would laugh, smirk, or even glare at him. After Rottenborn objected a few times, Depp started to say things like:

“She hit me. Is that better, Mr. Rottenborn?”

“I’ll make it easy for Mr. Rottenborn.”

And “Sorry, I was drawn by Mr. Rottenborn’s voice…”

Heard Takes the Stand One Last Time

Heard Takes the Stand One Last Time

When Heard took the stand again, Depp’s team started out fierce. Heard immediately got emotional, to which Depp’s attorney plainly said “objection, non-responsive.”

As soon as Depp’s team cross-examined her, she got really combative. When asked questions, she didn’t answer them.

She also loudly spoke over the attorney and even the judge at one point! It was honestly a surprise she wasn’t held in contempt.

Jury Deliberation

Jury Deliberation

After weeks of debate, huge controversies, and endless hours of testimony from both Depp and Heard, the jury finally entered the deliberation stage. For about 12 hours over three days, they finally reached a decision that would rock the country — and the world!

As a reminder, the nearly two-month-long trial centered on defamation from both parties. May onlookers treat the trial as a criminal domestic-abuse case, but it's actually a civil dispute between the former couple. However, abuse remains the focus of both lawyers, each trying to prove their client was the victim.

So, what were Johnny Depp and Amber Heard doing while the jury deliberated their fates? Heard laid low— probably hiding from hoards of rabid critics. Depp, however, took a different approach. On Tuesday, May 31, the formerly disgraced actor played his third concert of the week with Jeff Beck.

Some people believe Depp’s decision to perform signaled his confidence in the jury. Even when he didn’t show up at the courthouse, his fans lined up to see the results. One onlooker told The Washington Post, “I’m here to support him and hope he gets the verdict he deserves.”

Verdict

Verdict

Wednesday, June 1, 2022, the jury finally reached their decision. At 3 p.m. — no Johnny Depp in sight —the trial was over. The decision? Technically, both Johnny Depp and Amber Heard won their respective cases, but there was one clear winner: Johnny Depp.

The jury decided both cases of defamation had aspects of credibility, thus both actors were awarded compensation. Depp, however, won the majority of support — and money. Heard owes Depp $15 million in damages, including $10 million in compensatory damages and $5 million in punitive damages.

Despite the jury awarding Depp $5 million in punitive damages, a Virginia statute limited the payout to $350,000. As for Heard, she was awarded $2 million in damages because the jury also found Depp guilty of defamation.

What exactly did Depp do to defame Heard? Depp's former lawyer claimed the Heard's case was a "hoax," according to a piece he wrote in The Daily Mail. In the end, Depp won the case and Heard was left with crumbs.

Johnny's Statement

Johnny's Statement

Despite skipping out on the jury's official announcement, it's clear Depp was ecstatic about the court's decision. Not only were his lawyers overjoyed, but throngs of supporters in real life and online celebrated his "win." Nobody seems to care that he technically lost to Heard on one count of libel because the jury ultimately decided that " Heard defamed Depp in three separate statements in the Washington Post piece," as reported by CNN

In a statement released on Instagram, Johnny Depp shared his immediate thoughts on the verdict. It's clear he's pleased with the results and emphasizes how his life remains forever affected by Heard's initial allegations. Here's an excerpt of his full statement:

"Six years ago, my life... [was] forever changed. All in the blink of an eye. False, very serious and criminal allegations were levied at me via the media, which triggered an endless barrage of hateful content, although no charges were ever brought against me...  the jury gave me my life back. I am truly humbled...

"From the very beginning, the goal of bringing this case was to reveal the truth, regardless of the outcome. Speaking the truth was something that I owed to my children and to all those who have remained steadfast in their support of me. I feel at peace knowing I have finally accomplished that. The best is yet to come and a new chapter has finally begun... Truth never perishes."

Amber's Statement

Amber's Statement

On the other hand, Amber Heard released her own statement via social media. Clearly heartbroken and somber, she highlighted her feelings of defeat regarding the verdict against her years-long accusations. The following is her statement in full, which originated from her personal Instagram page:

"The disappointment I feel today is beyond words. I'm heartbroken that the mountain of evidence still was not enough to stand up to the disproportionate power, influence, and sway of my ex-husband. I'm even more disappointed with what this verdict means for other women. It is a setback.

"It sets back the clock to a time when a woman who spoke up and spoke out could be publicly shamed and humiliated. It sets back the idea that violence against women is to be taken seriously.

"I believe Johnny's attorneys succeeded in getting the jury to overlook the key issue of Freedom of Speech and ignore evidence that was so conclusive that we won in the UK. I'm sad I lost this case. But I am sadder still that I seem to have lost a right I thought I had as an American — to speak freely and openly."

The Aftermath and Public Opinion

The Aftermath and Public Opinion

It’s pretty clear that public opinion has been on Depp’s side, as far as social media is concerned. People rejoiced after Depp won his side, but not everyone was happy.

A lot of people have come forward and said that this result is a serious setback to the #MeToo movement and women’s rights.

Some attorneys and those who support women who have been abused stated women have already chosen not to press charges because they didn’t want to end up like Amber Heard.

What Now?

What Now?

Depp is pretty happy, to say the least. He’s been running around performing concerts before the results even came out. That hasn’t stopped either, and it probably won’t.

Heard, however, isn’t taking all this lightly. Elaine Bredehoft has been on several TV shows saying how they aren’t going to take this decision lightly.

Bredehoft says Heard was demonized and that the audience made the results biased. This means they’re definitely going to appeal the decision.

Experts are saying that it’s a bad decision because appeals are “really hard to win statistically speaking.” Appellate lawyer Jeff Lewis said “between 70 and 90 percent” of all appeals remain the same.
