The hit series Yellowstone, created by Taylor Sheridan, became a cultural phenomenon. It ran for five seasons, following the Dutton family and their Yellowstone Ranch in Montana. Patriarch John Dutton (Kevin Costner) and his children Jamie (Wes Bentley), Beth (Kelly Reilly), and Kayce (Luke Grimes) did everything to keep their family together and ranch operational. Now a new spinoff is set to follow Kayce after he’s lost everything.
The Name Change
The spinoff was originally announced in March 2025 with the title Y: Marshals. Technically, that was a working title, and in Januar,y CBS dropped the Y. A CBS spokesperson said that the Y was “always considered silent.” It was most likely because they wanted to make the association with the successful original show clear and bring old fans to this new series. But now that everybody knows it’s following fan-favorite Kayce Dutton, just Marshals sounds a lot cleaner.
Where Yellowstone Ended
To explain the new series, we’ll have to spoil the end of Yellowstone. After the death of John Dutton and the looming threat of developers, youngest son Kayce decided to sell the ranch to Broken Rock Reservation for $1.25 an acre, the price Dutton ancestors paid when they settled there. High Chief Thomas Rainwater (Gil Birmingham) accepted the deal with Kayce’s two conditions: his family, including wife Monica (Kelsey Asbille) and son Tate (Brecken Merrill), would be allowed to live on the property's East Camp and the land would never be developed or sold.
Marshals Plot
Marshals picks up after what was supposed to be Kayce’s fresh start. The CBS logline for the show reads, “With the Yellowstone Ranch behind him, Dutton joins an elite unit of U.S. Marshals, combining his skills as a cowboy and Navy SEAL to bring range justice to Montana, where he and his teammates must balance family, duty, and the high psychological cost that comes with serving as the last line of defense in the region's war on violence."
Because Kayce was looking at a quiet, simple life away from his father’s toxicity at the end of Yellowstone, fans know something big must have happened to draw him back into such a dangerous life. Based on the official trailer, fans are afraid that Kayce’s wife Monica dies at the start of the series.
The show will combine the Western feel of Yellowstone that fans loved with the law enforcement procedural element CBS is known for.
Where is Monica?
Kelsey Asbille, who played Monica, is noticeably absent from the trailer and has not been confirmed as a returning cast member. Grimes and other cast members, as well as creator,s refuse to acknowledge this. In the trailer, Kayce is heard saying, “The only thing I ever wanted was taken from me," as a sheet is pulled over a body in his bed. As his guiding light in the original series, her death would send him into a tailspin. This choice makes sense if they wanted to bring back the old angry, reckless Kayce.
Cast Announcements
Luke Grimes was the first cast member announced and will reprise his role as Kayce Dutton, the only living son of John Dutton. Brecken Merrill will return as Kayce's son Tate, more grown up now than we’ve ever seen him. Gil Birmingham (Thomas Rainwater) and Mo Brings Plenty (Mo) are also returning.
The new cast will consist of Arielle Kebbel as Belle, Ash Santos as Andrea, Tatanka Means as Miles, Logan Marshall-Green as Pete Calvin, and Brett Cullen as lead Montana U.S. Marshal Harry Gifford.
Will Taylor Sheridan Return?
Taylor Sheridan was the brilliant mind behind Yellowstone and has been a very busy guy since. But, don’t worry, he will serve as an executive producer on Marshals. The show’s writer is Spencer Hudnut, who wrote for SEAL Team on Paramount+. Hudnut will also serve as an executive producer and showrunner. Grimes is an executive producer as well.
Other Spinoffs
The original show has spawned an entire Yellowstone universe. 1883 and 1923 have already premiered, following Dutton ancestors as they began the ranch. Future spinoffs include 6666, 1944, and The Madison, which will follow another family. Kayce’s sister Beth (Kelly Reilly) and her husband Rip (Cole Hauser) are also set to star in their own spin-off, set to be titled Dutton Ranch. Safe to say, fans aren’t going to run out of Yellowstone content any time soon.
Where to Watch
Marshals will premiere March 1, 2026 at 8/7c on CBS. New episodes will come out on Sundays and be available for streaming the next day on Paramount+.
