Rich People Moving to Other Countries Since the Election

The reelection of Donald Trump has led many celebrities to announce plans to leave the US. Some are unhappy with the political situation and fear changes in society. Many LGBTQ+ people, especially trans people, and people of color feel less safe and protected, leading some to seek new homes in other countries. Stars like Ellen DeGeneres, America Ferrera, and Eva Longoria have already fled, and they shared how Trump’s return to power has influenced their decisions.

But moving abroad isn’t something everyone can do. Celebrities have money and connections, making it easier for them to start over in a new country while still working in their industries. Most Americans who share their fears don’t have this luxury. It’s also worth noting that not every celebrity move is about the election—some are looking for better opportunities, personal growth, or a different lifestyle. These moves show the growing tension and division in the U.S., bringing more attention to issues like safety and privilege.

Eva Longoria

Eva Longoria has chosen to leave the U.S. for a fresh start in Mexico and Spain. In an interview with Marie Claire, she cited her disappointment over Trump’s reelection. “It’s that a convicted criminal who spews so much hate could hold the highest office.”

She described the current state of the U.S. as “dystopian” and felt her chapter there had ended. She recognized her privilege in being able to move and sympathized with Americans who are “stuck” in the country.

America Ferrera

America Ferrera’s first name isn’t enough to keep her in the country. She and her husband, Ryan Piers Williams, have decided to move to the UK with their children. She’s looking into London schools to give her kids the “best opportunities.”

Despite her devastation over Kamala Harris’s loss, Ferrera plans to keep a presence in Hollywood for work commitments. While pursuing a fresh start for her family abroad, she remains connected to her acting career in the U.S.

Actress Sharon Stone publicly endorsed Kamala Harris for president and spoke out against Trump. She told The Daily Mail that she was “considering a house in Italy” if Trump were to win because of how opposed she was to him.

She went on to say, “This is one of the first times in my life that I've actually seen anyone running for office on a platform of hate and oppression." She has not confirmed whether she is moving since the election results.

Ellen DeGeneres and her wife, Portia de Rossi, have decided to leave the US and move to the UK after Trump’s election. They have already purchased a property in the Cotswolds, an area two hours from London.

The pair wasted no time in getting out of dodge, likely because of Trump’s attack against LGBTQ+ people. TMZ reported their disappointment with the election results, and they have the money for a fresh start.

Cher

Cher

Cher has been outspoken against Trump since his first run for president. She tweeted in June 2015, “IF HE WERE TO BE ELECTED, IM MOVING TO JUPITER.” While that didn’t happen, she said that seeing him elected in 2016 made her sick.

She told The Guardian in October 2023, that if he were reelected “this time I will leave [the country].” She very well may be serious because she has a trans child and Trump has been open about taking away trans rights.

Barbra Streisand

Barbra Streisand

Barbra Streisand was another big name who threatened to leave in 2016 if Trump were elected but didn’t follow through. However, in an interview on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert a year ago, she doubled down.

When Colbert asked about the possibly of Trump being reelected, Streisand said “"I will move. I can't live in this country if that's … if he became president." She said she’d probably go to England. We’ll see if she was serious this time.

Richard Gere

Richard Gere

Richard Gere has announced he’s moving to Spain, but it’s not for the reason you think. He explained on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon that his family would be moving to be closer to his wife Alejandra Silva’s family.

“She gave me about seven years here [in the US], so we’re going to spend some years in Madrid with her family,” he told Fallon. He believes now it’s important to be with his wife’s family and culture.

Britney Spears

Britney Spears

Okay, to be fair, it’s hard to know whether or not Britney Spears is serious these days. On December 3, 2024, she posted a video on Instagram saying she had “moved to Mexico.”

In another video, she said she moved because of how the paparazzi treats her, calling them “extremely mean and cruel.” Spears was actually in Mexico for her 43rd birthday, but I guess we’ll see whether she actually stays or not.

She wrote on Threads, “I've thought this for a while, but yesterday confirmed it for me. I don't see my future being in the United States.” As the child of the richest man, she definitely has the resources to move.
