Julia Roberts and Lyle Lovett
Back in 1993, during the height of the Brat Pack, Julia Roberts up and married country singer Lyle Lovett in a surprise wedding after three or four weeks of dating. According to Lyle, they had never spent more than seven days together before they were betrothed.
Although they may have become a couple, both maintained separate residences in Texas and NYC. The couple announced their separation after just two years together, and Julia considers the marriage a miscalculation, not a mistake.
Richard Gere and Cindy Crawford
It’s often been said that Crawford was Gere’s Pretty Woman—sans being an escort. They met at a barbeque when Cindy was 22 and starstruck. They married 1991, but by 1995, they were officially over.
The rumor mill went beserk, claiming it was a publicity stunt and that there were extramaritial affairs. Cindy later addressed the controversy stating that they didn’t spend enough time together and that the age difference was a factor.
Halle Berry and David Justice
Halle Berry’s first marriage was to Major League Baseball player David Justice, formerly of Braves fame and later Yankees. The pair said “I do” at 1:30 a.m. January 1, 1993, but they split in 1996 when Halle filed a restraining order against David. It was a difficult divorce, and there were rumors of physical abuse.
Halle has gone on to marry twice more. Justice acknowledged a passionate marriage but set the record straight that he never harmed or laid a hand on Berry.
Jennifer Garner and Scott Foley
Long before Jennifer was 13 Going on 30 and Ben’s almost-forever partner, Jennifer was married to Scandal hunk Scott Foley. They met on the set of Felicity in 1997, wed in October 2000, and separated by March 2003.
Jen credits Scott with being a really good guy; their marriage just never had a shot.
Mario Lopez and Ali Landry
Ali “Doritos Girl” Landry’s first claim to fame was eating chips, but a close second was her fleeting marriage to Mario for less than two weeks in 2004. They had the marriage annulled after Mario publicly copped to having cheated on her before the wedding.
Mario claims not to have understood the commitment, nor was he really ready for the expectations of marriage.
Tom Cruise and Mimi Rogers
Before Nicole and Katie, there was Mimi. They were married in 1987 in a small, secret ceremony in upstate New York—which provided plenty of tabloid fodder for the new couple. Rogers was the ex-wife of scientologist Jim Rogers, and was well-known for her exes (Tom Selleck and Christopher Reeve) while Tom was still negotiating his way through Hollywood.
They announced their intent to divorce in 1990. It’s been reported that Mimi is the one who introduced Tom to Scientology, although she’s no longer practicing.
Jeff Goldblum and Geena Davis
The Jurassic Park founder and the Thelma & Louise bombshell met on the set of their movie, Transylvania 6-5000 (Google it), and went on to appear in two more films together: The Fly and Earth Girls Are Easy.
The acting duo got married in Vegas in 1987. But wedded bliss was short-lived, and Geena filed for divorce in 1990 citing the oft used ‘irreconcilable differences’.
Nicolas Cage and Lisa Marie Presley
Nicolas wed Elvis Presley’s daughter, Lisa Marie, not long after the ink on his divorce decree to Patricia dried. Lisa Marie had previously been married to Michael Jackson.
Nicolas filed for divorce in 2002 after three months of marriage. “I’m sad about this, but we shouldn’t have been married in the first place,” Lisa Marie said in a statement at the time.
Renée Zellweger and Kenny Chesney
Renée and Kenny met on the set of NBC’s Concert of Hope tsunami aid telethon, and dating quickly ensued. They kept the romance under wraps until April, when she handed Chesney a margarita during a concert (google it). Their marriage lasted only four brief months in 2005, but the couple raised eyebrows when Renée cited “fraud” as the reason for their separation and annulment.
Rumors of financial fraud, bad behavior, and a host of other unsavory conclusions led to another statement noting, "the miscommunication of the objective at the start is the only reason for the annulment." Chesney claims that he just wasn’t ready to be married. Yep, it’s still a head-scratcher today.
Ryan Reynolds and Scarlett Johansson
You read that right. Before the stars were MARVELous in parallel universes, they were just an ordinary young couple dating quietly. So quietly in fact, that you may not have even known it.
Ryan Reynolds and Scarlett Johansson married in September 2008 in a quiet ceremony, but in December 2010, the couple announced they were separating. ScarJo reflects that her youth and naivete were part of their split; that she romanticized marriage instead of seeing it as a conscious coupling.
Brooke Shields and Andre Agassi
The supermodel-turned-actress married the tennis great in 1997, but they split up after just two years together.
In her 2014 book, Down Came the Rain: My Journey Through Postpartum Depression, Brooke detailed Andre’s numerous secrets: he’d been addicted to crystal meth during the first part of their relationship, and he was bald and wearing hairpieces.
Uma Thurman and Gary Oldman
The Kill Bill actor married Gary, 12 years her senior, back in 1990. The pair were first Introduced by Sean Penn in London, and they started dating in 1989—when Uma was 18. Oldman divorced his first wife, actress Lesley Manville in 1989 and married Uma the next year.
They divorced two years later. Gary remarried three more times, whereas Uma remarried twice.
Helen Hunt and Hank Azaria
The Mad About You star wed the Simpsons voice actor in 1999 after dating for five years. They split in 2000 following 17 months of marriage.
Azaria has been quite honest about their divorce in the media, saying at times he felt jealous of Hunt’s celebrity status and their divorce was one of the “saddest times of his life.”
George Clooney and Talia Balsam
Talia and George were married back in 1989 for four years, during the period right before George hit it big on ER. George told Barbara Walters in 1995, “I won’t get married again because I wasn’t very good at it.”
We all know that didn’t end up being true when he fell HARD for Amal. No tears for Talia, though; she is married to Mad Man John Slattery.
Dennis Hopper and Michelle Phillips
An impulsive marriage, Dennis Hopper and Michelle Phllips were married on Oct. 31, 1970, but their marriage only lasted eight days, as they divorced on November 8.
Hopper, who was married and divorced five times in his life, reportedly joked later, "seven of those days were pretty good. The eighth day was the bad one," according to the New York Daily News.
Jennifer Lopez and Ojani Noa
Back when she was just Jennifer Lopez (before J. Lo and Jenny from the block), Lopez married Ojani, a model and actor in 1997 for one year.
Noa has been anything but silent about the split, still talking about it 20 years later and alleging a tape. In 2016, Ojani appeared on Million Dollar Matchmaker looking for love.
Cher and Gregg Allman
Only three days after finalizing her divorce from Sonny Bono in 1975, Cher married southern rock musician Gregg Allman. After nine days of haze, heroin, and liquor on Allman’s part, Cher had enough and filed for divorce from him.
Luckily for Gregg, Cher believed in love and gave him a second chance—remarrying him, bearing his son, producing an album, and ultimately, divorcing again.
Demi Moore and Freddy Moore
Demi Gene Guynes married rocker Freddy Moore in 1980. He was 12 years older than her (and recently divorced) when she became his teen bride. They divorced in 1985, and she kept his name, becoming a household name as a member of the Brat Pack.
She later became Mrs. Bruce Willis and Mrs. Ashton Kutcher (although not at the same time), although she still to this day has kept Freddy's last name.
Bradley Cooper and Jennifer Esposito
Before he crooned with Lady Gaga in A Star is Born, Bradley Cooper was married to Crash actress and NCIS star Jennifer Esposito. They tied the knot in late December 2006 but called it quits just four months later.
Esposito credits a toxic relationship and drug abuse in her book but never outrightly claims it was Cooper; who remains silent on his partnerships other than to say he got sober.
Angelina Jolie and Johnny Lee Miller
Angelina’s first husband was Jonny Lee Miller, who currently stars as Sherlock Holmes on the CBS procedural Elementary. After appearing in the 1995 movie Hackers together, they got hitched in 1996, with Angelina wearing black rubber pants and a white shirt with Jonny’s name written in her own blood on the back.
It’s not the only time Jolie has sealed a marriage with blood. Angelina and Jonny divorced in 2000.
Nicolas Cage & Patricia Arquette
The action star met 19-year-old Arquette in a deli in the late '80s and reportedly told her, “Hey, I’m gonna marry you.” Patricia provided a list of items to prove his worthiness—items that included J.D. Salinger’s autograph, a black orchid, a Lisu tribe wedding costume, and a Big Boy statue.
Nic worked his way through the list over the years and another chance encounter in the same deli sealed their fate. They said “I do” in 1995 and divorced in 2001.
Elisabeth Moss and Fred Armisen
Elisabeth met the Saturday Night Live funny guy in October 2008 when her Mad Men costar Jon Hamm hosted the sketch show. They married a year later but separated after just eight months.
Fred claims he was “a terrible husband,” and Elisabeth concurred in an interview in 2014 by stating that she was young, and the marriage was traumatic.
Drew Barrymore and Jeremy Thomas
But before Drew and Tom got together, she was married to British bar owner Jeremy. She was only 19 and he was 31; they married after a spontaneous evening. Drew has said of the relationship, “I realized my mistake on the day I married him,” and she filed for divorce less than two months later. Rumors of marrying for a green card ensued, but Jeremy says he married her because she was cute.
Drew Barrymore and Tom Green
Drew met Tom Green as they appeared in both Charlie’s Angels and Freddy Got Fingered together. Marrying in 2001, Tom filed for divorce just months later citing “irreconcilable differences.”
Tom doesn’t talk about the marriage and hasn’t kept in touch with Drew other than to say that he wishes it could have worked and wished her much happiness.
Jim Carrey and Lauren Holly
Jim Carrey met actress Lauren Holly during an audition for Ace Ventura: Pet Detective. Although she didn’t land the part, she did land Jim instead. The funny man and his bride married in a mountaintop ceremony in 1996 and got divorced just nine months later.
Lauren credits the paparazzi and media attention for their divorce, stating that the constant attention and rumors were difficult for her. She does claim that some of her best memories were of their courtship.
Will Smith and Sheree Zampino
Will and Sheree were married from 1992 to 1995, and they share a son, Trey. Will met Jada while married to Sheree, and thus, a match was made on A Different World.
Sheree is part of the Smiths' large, blended family, and she’s quick to point out that youth, not infidelity, played a part in their divorce. Zampino is also quick to note that people were intimidated by her previous relationship and it was hard to meet a fella.
Heidi Klum and Ric Pipino
Everyone thinks Seal was her first husband, but it was celebrity hairstylist Ric back in 1997. Heidi and Ric took the plunge with traditional German customs during their civil ceremony.
However, they split 2002, but Heidi has since called him “a good guy” and said they’re “still friends.” Ric remains one of the most sought-after stylists in the country.
