Super Bowl XLIX Halftime: Lions, Sharks, and Katy Perry, Oh My

Where to even begin? The giant metallic lion/tiger? Missy Elliott making an appearance? The out-of-sync dancing sharks? This halftime show was one for the books (and Kim Jong-Un approved, we’re sure).

Perry ARRIVED

Let’s start with the lion/tiger/beast thing. Although odd, it definitely got everyone’s attention right off the bat, and Perry looked majestic riding it across the field while singing “Roar.” And who can forget that powerful roar at the end of the segment?

Off to A Good Start

After a small segment of her killer opening song, she sang “Dark Horse” on a massive chess board and “I Kissed A Girl” with the help of the one and only Lenny Kravitz. Her backup dancers were right on point during these parts of the show with the lanterns and slick dance moves. Perry’s outfit fell a little short, though. The red, orange, and white flame-covered ensemble looked like a mix between a bag of Flamin’ Hot Cheetos and Will Ferrell in Blades of Glory.

Left Shark Won Our Hearts

In a beachy scene that looked straight out of a somewhat creepy children’s cartoon, Perry belted out “Teenage Dream” and “California Gurls” right alongside dancing sharks, palm trees, and beach balls. Though, it looked like they pulled the shark on the left straight out of the ocean with no dancing lessons whatsoever. A lot of people didn’t notice until rewatching the video, so if all else fails when you’re onstage in front of millions around the world, just wave your arms around and (hopefully) most people won’t notice.

Missy Stole the Show

For those who don’t know, Missy Elliott is a highly successful singer-songwriter, rapper, and record producer with hits such as “Get Ur Freak On” and “Lose Control.” She hasn’t come out with much in recent years, but her fans are pretty die-hard. So, needless to say, they went crazy when she popped up onstage and started belting out “Work It” with our favorite pop princess.

Impressive Wardrobe Changes

Perry picked “Firework” to end on, which was the perfect finale to this bombshell of a show. After she completed three snappy outfit changes, including a black and purple jersey-mini-dress-thing and a fifties-esque beach get up, she closed with a futuristic, very flattering, silver gown. Then, she proceeded to “fly” around the stadium on a star/comet while actual fireworks were shot up above the stadiums large skylight. Baby, she’s a firework.

Perry’s halftime performance has been the most viewed Super Bowl Halftime in history, even beating out Bruno Mars’ performance from last year. After such a dynamic show we can only wonder how they’ll top it next year.
