I was one of those people who vowed to never watch The Bachelor or The Bachelorette. It’s always disturbed me that in 2015, we still have TV shows where women and men are desperate enough to compete for someone’s “heart” (I use quotations because no one on these shows is actually there for love; they’re there for their 15 minutes of fame and to possibly become the next Bachelor/Bachelorette).
So imagine my surprise when I tuned into The Bachelorette season 11 premiere a few weeks ago. I had heard how controversial it was supposed to be, because this time there were two bachelorettes instead of one – and it was up to the men to choose which one they wanted to compete for. Although this disgusted me even more (what self-respecting woman would actually put herself through that?), I was instantly hooked.
Maybe it was Chris Cupcake, who made his now-famous entrance in a cupcake-mobile, or maybe it was Kaitlyn Bristowe’s intoxicating laugh and her hilariously unfiltered mouth, but whatever it was, I kept tuning in week after week.
But it’s not the crazy once-in-a-lifetime dates in private jets or the over-dramatic declarations of love that I stick around for; it’s the insanely ridiculous WTF moments that happen along the way. I watch The Bachelorette purely for entertainment purposes. It’s reality TV trash, and there’s no doubt in my mind it’s 100% fake, but it’s my guilty pleasure nonetheless.
This is the first season of The Bachelorette I’ve ever watched, so I may be a bit biased, but I can’t imagine another season (or another Bachelorette) being crazier than this one. Here are the five craziest moments of season 11 so far:
5. Chris the Dentist Becoming Chris “Cupcake”
Who could ever forget the moment we all fell in love with Chris the Dentist? Let’s take a look back at the moment he became forever known as Chris “Cupcake.”
4. The Jerk Who Got Drunk (On Night One)
The drama started right off the bat on night one, when some jerk named Ryan had a little too much to drink. Before getting kicked off the show, Ryan managed to offend Kaitlyn (which is not an easy feat to accomplish) by slapping her on the ass, attempting to start a fight with a sex therapist who arrived in a hot tub car, stripping and falling in the pool (although he managed to hold onto his alcohol, which was impressive nonetheless), telling all the guys in the house that they “suck,” and throwing down the gauntlet/rose instead of voting for Kaitlyn or Britt.
3. The Bromance
If there were one single storyline this season that screamed “15 minutes of fame” louder than the others, it was the brief bromance between JJ and Clint. The two contestants seemed more into each other than they were into Kaitlyn, but things didn’t end so well…
2. Nick, aka “The Other Guy” Returns
Remember Nick Viall from Andi Dorfman’s season? I don’t, because I didn’t watch back then, but I’ve heard plenty about him from the guys who hate him on the show this season, as well as the Twitterverse. Well, he’s back. Apparently, he and Kaitlyn had a thing before she was chosen to be The Bachelorette, so he broke all the rules and came back in the middle of this season, which has been one of the most controversial storylines on the show.
Obviously, Nick really pissed all of the other guys off – especially Shawn, who made it to the top two along with Nick. He refuses to call him by his name, and refers to him as “The Other Guy,” Voldemort-style.
Anyway, Kaitlyn ended up sleeping with Nick before the fantasy suite episodes, when it’s “acceptable” to sleep with the remaining contestants (ew?). She then freaked out and talked/cried/whined about nothing but her secret rendezvous with The Other Guy for at least the next five episodes. She eventually told Shawn, and this is one of the many hilarious fights that ensued between the two remaining contestants:
1. That One Time a Contestant Slut-Shamed Kaitlyn
Kaitlyn Bristowe has been hands-down the most controversial Bachelorette to date. She’s made some questionable choices, and one douchey contestant decided to call her out on it. Ian, a deep and thoughtful man who graduated from Princeton and thinks far too highly of himself, slut-shamed Kaitlyn before choosing to go home – but not before laying out the many, many reasons why he should be the next Bachelor.
Because what woman wouldn’t want him after watching this degrading speech?
