10 Tips for Buying a Purebred Dog or Cat

When it comes time to get a new pet, a lot of people decide they want a purebred. But sometimes buying or adopting a full-blooded breed can be tricky. If you’re looking for a new family member, here are 10 tips you should know before you begin your search for a purebred pet.

  1. Always research the breed.
Before you get your heart set on a certain breed, you need to do a lot of research. Certain breeds have a particular personality and size. For example, not all cats are the same size. Maine Coons can grow to be as large as 20 pounds, and Shih Tzus are known to be extremely stubborn.
  2. Talk to people who own the breed.
One of the best ways to discover if you want to own the breed is to speak to someone who owns one. If you have your heart set on a Bombay cat or a Golden Retriever dog, then find someone who has one. After speaking with an owner of the breed, you may realize the pet is not for you. You can learn a lot about different breeds from a casual conversation.
  3. Research breeders in your area.
Do not purchase your pet from the first person you find, or you could end up with a sick puppy or kitten. Puppy mills are notorious for selling sick animals as are some kitten mills. Research local breeders in your area and make sure the breeder you choose has a good reputation.
  4. Go to shows.
One of the best ways to gain knowledge from someone who owns the breed is by going to a pet show. Not only will these animals be healthy, but you can also ask questions from professionals who know what it’s like to own and train the breed. Plus, you may be able to learn who the most reputable breeders are or make a contact who can answer questions if you need further assistance.
  5. Ask a lot of questions.
When you go to the pet show, or if you find someone who owns your preferred breed, ask a lot of questions. Think about these questions beforehand and write them down so you don’t forget to ask something. Some things to ask include, “What is it like training the breed?” “Are they energetic?” and “How large do they grow?"
  6. Consider adults over kittens or puppies.
When you want to get an animal, you may prefer a puppy or kitten. Baby animals are adorable, but getting an adult can be better for a couple of reasons. One, you won’t know the personality of a puppy or kitten—older pets have a developed personality that is easy to determine. Second, an adult may be less expensive. Sometimes breeders will have retired pets they’re willing to sell for less.
  7. Visit shelters and purebred shelters.
While it may be rare, you can find a purebred animal at a shelter. A purebred dog or cat will be picked up relatively quickly, but finding one at a shelter can save you a lot of money as well as give an animal a home. There are also organizations that specialize in taking full-blooded dogs and cats for adoption. Petfinder can help you find local purebred rescue organizations.
  8. Make sure the animal is healthy.
When you find an animal you want to adopt, you need to be sure he or she is healthy. The eyes should be clear, the coat should be shiny, the ears should be odorless, and the gums should be a healthy pink. Finally, the skin should also be blemish-free with no signs of wounds.
  9. Meet your pet before you buy.
If possible, meet your potential pet before you buy.Taking this step is the best way to ascertain if you and the animal are compatible. Even though you may love the breed, animals have different personalities. Try to spend a few hours with the dog or cat to see if you and your would-be pet are happy together.
  10. Avoid online scams.
One of the biggest issues in finding a purebred pet is avoiding scams. Never send someone money online, especially if you haven’t seen the animal. Try to meet in a public place, such as a grocery store or mall. One of the best ways to avoid a scam is just to pay cash in person when you're ready to purchase your new pet.
