5 Tips for Losing Weight After Having a Baby

Gaining weight during pregnancy is never fun, but it’s inevitable. Once the baby arrives, most moms can’t wait to shed those extra pounds. With a newborn, losing weight and working out can definitely be tricky, but there are ways you can kick-start your weight loss. Make sure your doctor clears you for exercise at your post baby appointment before you begin any workout routine. Here are five tips for shedding that baby weight.

  1. Don’t diet, instead eat a healthy, well-balanced diet. With a newborn you need your energy. Don’t deprive yourself or attempt to count calories. Keep easy healthy snacks in your home like apple slices, carrot sticks, or whole-wheat crackers to make it easier on you. If family or friends offer to stop by the grocery store or to bring you food then suggest something a little a healthier option.

  2. Keep yourself hydrated. Keep a glass of water with you at all times and make sure you are drinking often. This keeps you from becoming dehydrated, and will fill you up so you aren’t tempted to eat unnecessary snacks. This is especially important if you are breastfeeding because you need to keep up your supply.

  3. Breastfeeding is also said to promote weight loss. Studies give mixed opinions on this, but many women say it helped them bounce back to their pre-baby weight. Breastfeeding can present a number of challenges a new mom might not expect. Make sure you have a support system set up to help you through the tough times. It might be a good idea to research a lactation consultant near by to have on hand if you should need the extra guidance.

  4. Get up and get moving. The thought of exercising can be daunting when you are exhausted and stressed, but it’s so important for your physical and mental health. Add in a brisk walk with your baby in the stroller into your routine. This aerobic exercise will get your heart rate up. Try to get up to 150 minutes of exercise a week.

  5. Ask family and friends for help. If you are having trouble fitting in a workout or a trip to the grocery store to pick up healthy foods then enlist the help of friends or grandparents. Most would be more than willing to spend time with your new bundle of joy. It will give you a few minutes to yourself and help you back on track to your pre pregnancy weight.
