What to Pack in Your Hospital Delivery Bag

Deciding what to pack in your hospital bag can be overwhelming. Around 34 weeks it’s important to start gathering your things so your bag can be ready to go. So what do you pack and where do you start? Here is a list of items and advice to help you get prepared for your little one’s arrival.

Check with your hospital and see what they provide before making your packing list. Some hospitals provide more than others so it’s important to check with your labor and delivery ward to see what items you need to bring in. Most hospitals provide diapers, wipes, and basic clothing items for the baby. If you want your baby to wear a personalized hat or outfit then you definitely need to pack it. Hospitals also typically provide a hospital grade breast pump if you choose to start pumping at the hospital or would just like a nurse or lactation consultant to help you figure it out. If you are planning on breastfeeding, consider bringing a breastfeeding pillow to keep you and the baby comfortable while trying to establish feeding. If you have decided to use a pacifier you can bring that along to introduce to your newborn.

For yourself, pack plenty of comfort items. Some moms like having their own pillow or robe to use after childbirth. Make sure you bring any camera or phone you want to use to take pictures of your sweet baby and don’t forget the chargers either. Your feet could swell after labor so bring shoes that have some extra room. Pack your headbands or ponytail holders to keep your hair out of your way during labor. Make sure you pack something comfortable for you to wear home, a large flowy nightgown might be a good option, especially if you have a c section since pants could sit right on the incision.

Don’t forget all your toiletries. Some hospitals provide standards like toothpaste and shampoo, but it is much more comforting to have your own. Basic items like lip balm should be in your bag as well.

When packing for the daddy to be, make sure he has lots of comfy clothes and his favorite toiletries. And maybe even something for entertainment in case you both need to settle in for a long stay.

It’s great to pack cash and change for the vending machines. Socks or slippers are also nice to have with the cold hospital floors. You might want to consider bringing a white noise machine to help block out hospital noises. Ask around with family and friends to see if there were any items they were thankful they packed or things they brought then didn’t use.
