Dim the Lighting
Turning off the glaring overhead light (or at least replacing the bright bulb with something warmer) will automatically make your home signifigantly cozier. Harsh, direct light won’t help you relax. Instead, hang some string lights and buy some lamps. Focus on filling your home with indirect, warm light. Dimming the lights allows for a much more inviting home that is said to inspire creativity and help you make better choices.

Add Throw Pillows and Blankets
Is it even possible to get cozy without being wrapped in a blanket and sinking into several fluffy pillows? Is it wrong to have too many pillows? Can those blankets ever be too soft? No. No to all of the above.

Clean
This may be a no-brainer, but how can you de-stress if your place is a mess? Spending a little bit of time getting your place in tip-top shape will not only make it easier to feel relaxed, but it’ll also let you feel like you’ve knocked something off your to-do list.

Get a Cat
Or a dog. Or a bearded dragon. Just get some sort of pet that loves you and wants you to come home. Or at least get a pet that you love. Nobody knows how Mr. Whiskers really feels about you.

Get Cooking
Light a Fire
If you have a fireplace, use it. If not, turn on Netflix’s “Fireplace for Your Home” (yes, that is a real thing) and relax by the open flames. After all, how great is sitting near a warm flame, listening to it crackle, while sipping on some tea?

Brew Some Tea
Or make coffee if you don’t like tea. Either way, your life only gets better when you’re drinking something warm.

Invite Friends Over
Get Extra Seating
If you plan on inviting people over relatively often, you’ll need someplace for them to cozy up as well. Get a loveseat and a chair or two. Your guests will love you.

Upgrade Your Couch
Purchase a couch you love. You’re going to want something that looks great and lasts a long time, so it’s worth spending a little extra time and money to get it just right. You’ll feel super proud of yourself every time you use it, so consider investing.

Clean Up the Clutter
Your home should feel like you live there, not like you’re crashing in someone else’s house. Give things designated spaces and put them up when you’re done. It’ll make you feel like you belong there.

Listen to Music
Hide From the World
Go out of your way to make your home the place you hide and relax in. Don’t spend all of your time out and about. Cook at home or watch a TV show by yourself. If you live with people, get up before everyone else so you can have a few minutes alone, in peace, snuggled up with your blanket and Mr. Whiskers.

Make Your Bed Setup Amazing
Do you have a fantastic mattress? Silky soft sheets? A warm duvet? If not, then you’re spending a third of your life wrong. You could be sleeping like royalty, and all you need is a little bed upgrade. Trust me when I say that this is not something you want to miss out on.

Wear Slippers
Decorate With Rugs
Your feet will thank you when you give them a soft rug to walk around on. Hardwood floors are great, but rugs make the room quieter and the floors softer. It doesn’t hurt that they’re a great way to showcase your design aesthetic. There’s a million different types of rugs out there, so keep your eye out for the perfect one.

Get Plants
If your home has no plants, it’s missing out. Big plants, little plants, it doesn’t matter. Get them both! What better way to feel like somebody lives in your home than to fill it full of life?

Light A Few Candles
Candles are a great way to fill your home with warm light and seasonal scents. They’re soft, comforting, and only get better the more you have. Add in the fact that your home will smell amazing and there’s no good reason not to light up a few.

Buy an Accent Table
Where else are you going to set that tea when you’re tired of holding it? Accent tables are a beautiful place for you to put your drinks without having to move from your comfy spot.

Use Wooden Accents
Wood gives a certain warmth and depth that is difficult to find elsewhere. It makes your home feel safe while adding a bit of uniqueness to it. Just be careful to not overdo it. It’s not the ‘70s anymore.

Get Better Curtains and Blinds
You don’t want the sun to keep you from seeing that villain who just slipped on-screen, so get some curtains and blinds to block the glare. Target and Walmart have some great and affordable choices, so you really have no excuse not to.

Display Trinkets With Sentimental Value
What better way to make your home feel like you belong than to set out those trinkets only you would love? Little decorations are sure to give any room a touch of your personality without having to go and spend a bunch of money. Set out things you got on your visit to Hawaii a few years back, or some family heirlooms, and your home will be full of comforting reminders of the good ole days.

Use Your Bookshelves
Your books represent you, so show them off. If you don’t have enough to feel comfortable displaying with pride, then the shelves are still a great space to store all the knick-knacks you don’t know what to do with.

Buy a Bath Rug
There's no worse feeling than the cold bathroom floor in the middle of the night. Slap a bath rug down and stumble through the dark bathroom in comfort.

Decorate the Walls
Hang the art you found on Etsy or a picture of your parents when they were your age. Your home can’t be generic with that old picture of Mom and Dad hung up there.

Hang a Curtain Wall or Tapestry
Your home will feel like a castle when you hang up a magnificent tapestry. Hide the cold, hard wall by making it look like something you could just fall into.

Make Moving Through Your Home Easy
Your couch should look like you can fall into a mountain of blankets, but you shouldn’t have to move a chair and crawl over your coffee table to get there. Rearrange if you have to, but you shouldn’t have to step over or around things in your own home.

Get Your Pet a Pet Bed
Your pets probably love to sleep, so give them a bed they’ll love. They’ll have a great space to nap beside you. Well, at least until they disappear to go do mysterious pet things.

Collect Something
Do you collect records? Movies? Gas station statues of fairies and dragons? Display them proudly and watch as your collection grows.
