4 Window Box Ideas to Increase Curb Appeal

Window boxes are one of the easiest do-it-yourself projects that you can finish over the course of a weekend to really amp up the curb appeal of your house. There are plenty of options for different kinds of windows and houses, and most of them are cheap and easy. Here are some different ideas to help you add instant curb appeal to your home over the weekend using window boxes, flowers, and herbs.

Vinyl Siding

If you have vinyl siding, you may feel like you’ve been left out of the window box trend, but fear not! You can have as many window boxes as you want with this brilliant idea: use vinyl siding hooks with a wall planter and coconut liner. You can create any design you want anywhere on the outside of your house. This idea gives you unlimited options for plants that need special care. Shady plants can be moved to shady areas, and the planters are easily removable if you want to redo your design.

Build Your Own

Of course, there’s always the option of doing it yourself as opposed to buying a planter or a window box from a store. Using a pallet or an old beer crate, you can create a planter of your own to fit your own quirky sense of style. Just don’t forget to drill drainage holes into the bottom of any window box in order to properly drain roots to prevent root rot. Adding an arched trellis above your window box creates a false window and looks lovely on any house.

Upcycle!

If you want a truly original window box, go for something you already own. Slap a new coat of paint on an old drawer from a thrift shop dresser and voila! Now you have a brand new and adorable window box planter! Color coordinating your plants and flowers to match the season or your paint gives your curb appeal an immediate boost. You can use almost anything as long as you drill drainage holes, or line the bottom with large stones or broken terracotta to allow for proper drainage.

Being Choosy

When you choose the plants for your window box, don’t forget to add depth and height. If you decide to go with a flower theme, choose at least three different types of flowers to give your home character and beauty. Flowers that cascade and add a waterfall effect are best for the front of your window box, while taller, sturdier flowers need to take their place toward the back. Arrange them as if you were taking their family photo, tallest in the back and shortest in the front, to really give your window boxes a look of perfection.
