Your washing machine is something you should never have to live without. It can be a real lifesaver, especially when you have children or pets. Here is a list of six things you should never put into your washing machine unless you want to ruin it.
Coins and Change
Small, metal objects such as coins get thrown into washing machines all time, but do they ever really do any damage? The answer is yes. Coins and other small metal objects can really beat up the drum in your washing machine. If you have a front-loading washer, a coin can even shatter the glass panel of your washing machine door. They are small enough to get stuck inside your washing machine and cause serious damage. Don’t forget to always check your pockets.
Lingerie
First of all, it’s bad to machine-wash your lingerie in the first place. Hand washing keeps your lingerie in a like-new state. Washing your unmentionables in the washing machine is not only detrimental to your clothing, but the hooks and underwires can also cause damage to your washing machine drum. If you insist on cleaning them in the washin machine, put them in a lingerie bag to avoid damage.
Excessive Detergent
Using an excessive amount of detergent can actually damage your clothes and your washing machine. Your washing machine has a control panel and using too much soap or fabric softener is harmful to the sensitivity of it. Make sure you measure out the correct amount, or check your washing machine’s manual to ensure you are using a normal amount.
Your Keys
Just like coins, keys are very damaging to a washing machine drum. Paying to get your washing machine drum repaired or replaced is not cheap, so once again remember to always check your pockets. This could also be bad news for your keys as well, especially if you have an automatic locking key fob.
Too Much Laundry
If you overstuff your washing machine, you could be damaging the bearings and suspension. Not to mention, without proper spacing, your clothing is not getting properly cleaned when it is cramped inside your washing machine. Don’t overload your machine to ensure it has a longer lifetime with little wear and tear, and to ensure your clothes are clean and sanitized.
Too Little Laundry
Just like overloading your machine, running too many small loads of laundry is bad for it as well. The act of running a small load of laundry is not actually detrimental to your machine, but running lots of little loads eventually wears your machine down. Use your machine to its full capacity to wash fewer loads, but don’t overload it either.
