Apple Crisp Recipe: Oatmeal Never Tasted Better

Few things are more mouthwatering than an apple crisp. It's one of the most delicious desserts you can make with oatmeal, and it's one of the easiest. This apple crisp recipe will make you look like a cooking pro.
This recipe takes about twenty minutes to prep and an hour to cook. It will make approximately 10 servings. As a tip, consider lining the baking dish with aluminum foil to keep the apple crisp moist, to cook it evenly, and to make clean-up a breeze.

Ingredients

Filling:
5 pounds of McIntosh or Macoun apples
Grated zest of 1 orange
Grated zest of 1 lemon
2 tablespoons freshly squeezed orange juice
2 tablespoons freshly squeezed lemon juice
1/2 cup granulated sugar
2 teaspoons ground cinnamon
1 teaspoon ground nutmeg

Topping:
1-1/2 cups flour
3/4 cup granulated sugar
3/4 cup light brown sugar, packed
1/2 teaspoon kosher salt
1 cup oatmeal
1/2 pound cold unsalted butter, diced

Directions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F. Butter a 9 x 14-inch baking dish that is at least two inches deep. Coating the dish with butter will add flavor, but if you don't use butter, be sure to spray the dish with non-stick cooking spray, even if you are lining the dish with aluminum foil, to prevent sticking.
  2. Peel, core, and cut the apples into wedges that are about 1/2 inch wide on the outer edge. In a large bowl, combine the apples with the zest and juice of the lemon and orange.
  3. Add the sugar, cinnamon, and nutmeg to the mixing bowl. Combine these ingredients with the apples either by hand or with a wide spoon. Once the apples are evenly coated, pour the mixture into the baking dish.
  4. This step is where you're going to make the topping. The first thing you'll need to do is combine the flour, white and brown sugars, salt, oatmeal, and the cold butter in another large bowl. Mix these ingredients with either a stand mixer or a hand mixer at low speed until crumbly. The butter crumbles should be approximately the size of peas. Sprinkle this mixture evenly over the apples. Do not mix.
  5. Place your crisp into the oven and allow it to cook undisturbed for one hour or until you can cut into the apples without resistance. The apples should appear to be bubbly. Serve the crisp warm, and wait for the compliments!

Tips

  • Consider serving the apple crisp with a scoop of ice cream. The warm and cold will complement each other. While almost any flavor is delicious, we suggest vanilla, hazelnut, and similar flavors. Chocolate may clash with the apple crisp.
  • Be sure to use McIntosh or Macoun apples. If you cannot find these, consider mixing Pink Lady with Granny Smith or Braeburn with Golden Delicious. The mixture of these sweet and tart apples will make a wonderful combination. Not just any apple will work for this recipe.
  • Always peel and core the apples before cooking. Leaving the skins on the apples will alter your crisp's consistency and texture.
