Bed Frames, Mattresses, and Bedding: A Guide

When getting ready to purchase a new bed there are several things to think of. You need to make sure you consider your bed frame, mattress, and bedding. It’s important to research all of the components that make up your bed so you can create the most comfortable combination possible.

What About Bed Frames?

The frame of your bed is the largest piece of furniture in your bedroom and sets the tone for your bed. It’s important to consider the look and style that you want for your room when you go shopping for a new bed frame. There are several different styles of headboards available. Some are more modern, like the platform bed, and some are more ornate.

A platform bed is generally low to the ground, which provides a cooler sleep environment than traditional designs. The simplest platform styles have no headboard or footboard. If you’d like something decorative, then a four-poster bed frame is an excellent option due to the dramatic drapes. Sleigh beds are also a dramatic choice. For comfort, make sure that whichever bed frame you choose has the proper support for your mattress. Other than that bed frames simply contribute to the style and aesthetic of your bedroom.

What Do You Need to Look for in a Mattress?

Mattresses are a big investment that you will use every night, and therefore you should purchase the highest quality mattress that you can afford. Innerspring mattresses are the most widely used type of mattress and can be found at a wide variety of price points. If you don’t have the deepest pockets then an innerspring pillow top mattress could be an excellent option that meets both budget and comfort needs.

Memory foam mattresses contour to the sleeper's body, providing support and comfort. The foam can be a solid mattress core or can be used as a top layer over a more conventional innerspring base. Memory foam mattress toppers should be purchased if you want the feel of memory foam mattress without the financial commitment.

Adjustable beds are mattress attached to a movable frame that allows you to raise the lower and upper portions of the mattress to whatever position is the most comfortable for you. They are expensive beds, but they won’t add to the look and style of your room on their own. You will have to rely on your bedding to spruce adjustable beds up.

How Do You Choose the Right Bedding?

Luckily, bedding isn’t as much of a financial burden as mattresses and bed frames. When choosing you should focus primarily on comfort, but also keep the appearance of your bedding set and room in mind. It’s also a good idea to have seasonal bedding so you can the as comfortable as possible year round.

If you want to be in full control of your bedding, you can mix and match the pieces of your bedding instead of purchasing a pre-matched bedding set. However, if you are purchasing for a child’s bed then a pre-matched bedding set is the easiest and most affordable option. Children change their tastes frequently as they grow up so it is best to spend as little as possible until they’ve matured.

Choosing and decorating your bed takes more thought than simply choosing the first mattress you sit on or the first bed frame you see. By thoughtfully considering what you want and need from your bed and doing the legwork required, you’re sure to create the perfect bed for you and your loved ones.
