Creating a Kid-Friendly Backyard

While a backyard can be a haven for adults, it can be a wonderful world of freedom and adventure for children. There are many factors to consider in making this area kid-friendly and enticing, from safety features to natural elements. Modern technology can never compete with the simplicity of a backyard where children can play.

Surfaces

Safe surfaces are of paramount importance in the family backyard. Pavers are a better option than concrete slabs as they are both non-skid and non-slip. If a replacement paver is necessary, you only need to replace one and not the entire area (saving on time and money for the adults). Artificial turf or grass provides a gentler surface for children to play on, the surface is even and no harmful pesticides will need to be used.

Outdoor Furniture

Outdoor furniture specifically constructed for the size of children is a practical addition to any play area. Though inexpensive plastic furniture is readily available, pick wood furniture to last longer and ensure its weight will not allow it to be tossed about by strong winds. A picnic table can be used for picnics and a craft area as well.

Plants and Flowers

Plants and flowers in the backyard are pleasing for adults to look at and offer a natural education for kids. Wildflowers native to the area in addition to colorful purple coneflowers will entice butterflies and hummingbirds to the yard, and a variety of fascinating insects will also follow. Take care to eliminate any toxic plants or flowers, and remove anything prickly or containing thorns for children's safety.

Play Areas

Sandboxes can offer unlimited creativity within a contained environment. Sandcastles can be erected, moats dug and tunnels burrowed. All children love the feel of dirt in their hands and every adult likes when it stays in a specified area. Be sure to cover the sandbox when not in use as local pets and critters tend to view it as a personal litter box.

A Home for Animals

Providing shelter and nourishment to birds by setting up birdhouses or feeders can educate children on the different species living in their own backyards. In addition to viewing birds, adults can also install bat boxes on trees within or surrounding the yard. Watching bats fly at dusk offers yet another animal kingdom lesson and free natural insect control as well.

Gardens

The majority of today's children believe food comes from the grocery store but a small vegetable garden in the backyard can correct that perception. To learn the true origin of food by planting a few select vegetables is a wonderful introduction to gardening for kids. As a bonus, children are much more likely to eat their vegetables if they have participated in the growth process.

Though the creation of a safe and fun backyard for children will take a bit of time and work, the end result will be worth it. A backyard is the perfect place for kids to grow and develop, to play and learn. Children benefit from these spaces and adults appreciate the kid-friendly environment.
