Decorating Your Apartment Balcony

If your apartment balcony is small, you can still enjoy many of the pleasures a balcony area has to offer. You simply have to keep an open mind, explore your decorating options and let your creative thoughts run free when deciding how to furnish and decorate your small balcony.

Furniture

If breakfast or dinner for two is one of the ways you want to use your balcony, a small cafe table or bistro set is one of the first furnishings you want to include on the balcony. Folding dining sets or a stackable table and chair set is ideal for your small space. Furniture that is minimalistic in design will consume less space on the balcony.

A cozy reading area can be created on the balcony with a comfortable chair and ottoman or a small loveseat placed in the corner of the balcony. As an alternative to those options, you could simply add a bench across the balcony and use cushions and pillows to make it a cozy, comfortable spot to relax in.

Privacy

When you're decorating a small balcony, you may want to make decorative choices that will add privacy to your outdoor living space. Planters with tall plants, vines that climb a trellis or hanging baskets with trailing plants can add a sense of privacy to your balcony. Bamboo shades, bamboo fencing, or a bamboo folding screen can add a tropical atmosphere to the balcony and keep nosy neighbors out. You can add a fabric shade or fabric panels around the rail on your balcony to create a more intimate and private space as well.

Lights

String lights are a popular lighting option for a balcony. Multi-colored lights make the space look festive and are great for the times you want to entertain friends on the balcony. For a more intimate evening, white string lights are an option. For a romantic or serene ambiance, you might want to include a tabletop fire pit, candles, or table-style lantern lights as part of your balcony decor.

Entertaining

You want to have enough seating for guests, but you don’t want your balcony cluttered with furniture all the time. You can hang folding chairs on the wall and then take them down when you have company. They can remain out of the way at all others times.

If you want to decorate your balcony so that is becomes a tranquil, cozy, relaxing retreat, it's the attention to small detail that will help you achieve your goal. Plants and the containers they are in can add beauty to your balcony. Personalizing the area with a piece of art or a small outdoor sculpture that appeals to you, an interesting rug, accent pillows that reflect your personality, and a few decorative accessories will make the area inviting. When decorating, keep in mind that less can be more in a small space.
