How the Colors in Your Home Affect Your Mood

Blue

Blue

Blue is an extremely popular color, especially this year. It’s an ideal choice for your bedroom because it makes a person feel calm and at ease. That’s exactly what you need when trying to fall asleep! This shade can do so much more, though.

Blue also helps people think more clearly and be more productive. That makes it the perfect color for a home office or study room. Something important to note is that pastel blues can come off as cold or chilly. If you want the room to feel inviting, go with a warm blue.

If your bedroom room doubles as your study, blue may be the perfect color choice. It’ll help you focus like no one’s business! Just avoid getting too intense, or it could keep you up. Consider breaking it up with another color.

White is easily the most common choice to mix with blue because it helps enhance and brighten the chosen colors. Don’t be afraid also to go with some neutrals that accent your blue instead of overwhelming it.

Black

Black

Isn’t this a brave one? Black can be used in small doses all over the house, but people are really going all out this year. In fact, some people are painting accent walls black, and you know what, it doesn’t look bad!

Black accent walls look extremely modern and new, especially paired with something like board and batten. Black is all about elegance and mystery. Those who like this color are ambitious and sophisticated.

Be careful, however. Too much black can make a room seem extremely small. It can also make the area feel depressing. It works best as an accent color, so choose where to put your shade carefully.

It looks best when broken up with white, especially if you want the black to create depth in the room. The best thing about this shade is that it can go in literally any space. Unfortunately, like white, it can hard to keep clean.

Red

Red

Red is a unique color. Many people link it to romance, love, and roses, but red is also the color of hostility and rage – not something you’d want to paint your bedroom. Some color experts also claim that red can raise your heart rate and blood pressure.

Depending on the color you choose, your red could have a different effect in each room. It’s a great color for socializing and can even feel relaxing. There’s a reason why red is also the color of Christmas!

Red

Red

This confident color is fantastic for a living room or dining room. It can even stimulate the appetite when accented well. Some prefer to go with a candy-apple red, but we prefer muted, rich reds.

These types of reds remind you of vibrant flowers and make the room feel much cozier. Depending on the shade you choose, red can go with coral, apricot, turquoise, other blues, and white. Incorporating wood grains can also give your room a rustic feel.

Gray

Gray

Gray is one of the most popular paint colors this year. It’s classic, elegant, and works with every color out there. It allows you to change your primary color regularly or with the seasons.

The fact that it’s so versatile is why many people choose it. It also brings warmth to a room as long as it isn’t the only color in the whole place. No one wants a house that’s fifty shades of gray.

Lighter shades create an elegant and classic feel. On the other hand, darker gray makes a room look super modern. Not many choose darker grays, but it’s a fantastic option for anyone that wants a “current” look.

However, pay attention to the undertone. If you want a warmer feeling, go with a gray that has a beige, brown, or taupe undertone. Cool tones can feel chilly if not combined with other colors to brighten up a room.

Pink

Pink

Ah, pink. It isn’t just a color for a girl’s bedroom. Pink is delicate but also feminine, innocent, and romantic. You like pink roses, right? Pink is in the red family, but much more tranquil, meaning it can work great for a bedroom.

Unlike its counterpart, pink has been shown to promote calmness and reduce aggression. Kinnick Stadium decided to make their whole locker room pink to reduce their effectiveness on the field.

Pink

You don’t have to go with a strong, vibrant pink, either. You can go with pink accents (like furniture, pillows, or flowers) or dusty pink. Dusty pink is becoming a very popular paint color.

While this color looks beautiful in any room, it looks excellent in a bedroom or office. It may help get a little extra work done! If you love the shade, you can also decorate your living room with this color!

Yellow

Yellow

Yellow might seem like an unsightly color to some, but the psychology behind the color is amazing. This color has been known to make people feel happy and uplifted. It also makes the room feel brighter, which is why many choose to paint their darkest room yellow.

Kitchens are a popular option for yellow because it makes you feel energetic. Isn’t that what you need when you’re making dinner after a long day at work? It may not feel like a cup of coffee, but it may put a little pep in your step!

Yellow

Since yellow is such a powerful color, you may not want to go crazy with the shade, especially if you’re choosing something bold. Accents may be the best choice for yellow since it can easily overwhelm.

Kitchens are a great choice, as mentioned before, but entryways can also work. Yellow entryways create a welcoming feeling that invites guests further into your room. Talk about a glam foyer!

Orange

Orange

If you want something that’s genuinely energetic, look no further than orange. This fall color is often overlooked because it’s considered too bold, but we wholeheartedly disagree.

Considering there are a million different shades, you can pick the one that suits you. A dusty orange can look especially beautiful – think peach or a soft marigold. If you’re not ready to jump in, try furniture covers instead of paint.

Orange

Since orange causes you to feel energetic, it’s the last thing you want in your bedroom. It’s great for a kitchen, exercise room, or playroom. Anywhere you want a lot of activity and life.

Neutrals will always work well with orange, but you’d be surprised with how many other shades go with this beautiful color. Burgundy or purple look stellar, but if you’re feeling particularly adventurous, then roll with teal.

Green

Green

Green is one of our favorite colors. This writer actually used it as her accent wall! Green is all about life and nature. Some also describe it as joyous, harmonious, and energetic. Those who like the color green are said to believe in stability and balance.

Since this is the most relaxing color in the color wheel, you can’t go wrong with the room. Depending on the shade, the serene, tranquil feeling can be great washed over a bathroom or hung in a bedroom. For an energetic feel, go with bold greens like lime or Nickelodeon Slime green.

Green

Green

Green is a combination of blue and yellow. Blue makes you feel calm, while yellow makes you feel happy. This shade looks especially great when decorated with plants, artificial or not. Deep green leaves help emphasize the warm hues of your palette.

You can also go with a green and gray color palette for an extremely modern feel. Sage green with a lighter gray can look marvelous and almost futuristic in a bathroom or living room. Not to mention, you can match the hardware easily!

Brown

Brown

Brown helps ground a room. It represents earth and adds warmth to any room, regardless of shade. This color is extremely common with traditional décor, but don’t let that make you shy away!

It can bring elegance and sophistication to a room, and it gives you a variety of decorating options. Since brown is neutral, it goes with literally every other shade on this list, so you can change your home whenever you want.

Brown

Brown

Since it represents the earth and all things natural, you can decorate with raw materials like stone, metal, or wood. Don’t be afraid to throw in a plant or two. Sorry, we’re obsessed with plants (not sorry).

One of the easiest plants to care for is a pothos. Just water it when it gets a droopy. Traditional, elegant décor will also look amazing with this color if it’s a lighter shade.

Silver

Silver

“How do you decorate with silver?” We have the answer to that question! It’s easier than you may think because it’s all about the natural metal (although not everything has to be made of metal).

Silver represents prosperity and wealth. It’s a very modern color to decorate with, and it’s unique. The thing about silver is that it looks best when accented with other colors. Gray is a natural choice, but don’t be afraid to branch out.

Silver

An all-silver room can be a bit much, but if you love it, roll with it! The difference between silver and gray is the reflective properties. Mirrored items work well because they’re cheaper than an all-silver version.

White is also another natural choice, but you can roll with any other shade on this list. Silver is in the neutral family, so it would look good with purple, pink, red, green, or whatever your heart desires!

Purple

Purple

Those who like purple are a little funny because they go all out. There isn’t just one purple thing – the whole room is purple. We don’t mean that in a bad way.

Purple sparks your imagination. People who love this color are very creative and wise. Maybe they know better than the rest of us! During the 15th century, it was also the color of royalty, and that just stuck around.

Purple

The actual shade can make you feel at ease and calm. Think about it: lavender is purple, right? You don’t need to go with a vibrant purple to get the effects. Many prefer to go with a pastel purple or a delicate shade of lilac.

Purple works best when used in a bedroom or bathroom. It might also help you sleep a little better. We suggest using some lavender aromatherapy to complete the effect.

White

White

Here’s what we enjoy most about white: it makes the world around you pop. If the inside of your home is white, the greenery peeking through your window will look almost superficially green (in a beautiful way).

White is all about cleanliness. It creates a cool, refreshing feeling, which also makes people feel younger. Like every shade out there, there are cool and warm tones to choose from.

White

Warm white shades will always make you feel cozy. Pretty much any warm shade will do that. Unlike some of the other colors on this list, a cool white has a very formal feel. It almost makes you feel like you’re in a formal sitting room.

The only downside to white is that it can be challenging to keep clean. If you have kids or pets, this may not be the decorating color for you. Nothing makes pet hair stand out more than sitting on a white couch.
