Is a Home Theater Worth It?

Are you thinking about putting in a home theater? While home theaters can be a fun addition, you need to decide if it’s worth the time and money.

Define “Worth the Money”

Whether or not this theater is going to be worth the money depends upon how you define this phrase, but also how much money you are comfortable spending on it. For example, let's say that getting the home theater is going to put a significant hole in your bank account, and won’t leave you with much of a financial safety net. Since a home theater is a luxury and not a necessity, you should not have one installed unless you will still have a decent amount of money in your account afterwards.

Will It Be Used?

When a home theater is new, everyone will be racing to use it. However, consider if that will still be the case weeks, months, or years after the fact. If you truly feel that you are going to use it on a regular basis, then it won't be a waste of money. On the other hand, if you think it is going to be one of those rooms that is popular for a short while and then sits with the door closed, you are better off foregoing it.

Does It Add Value to the Property?

In terms of an appraisal, a home theater will add value. However, you need to think about who your prospective buyers are. Many middle-class buyers are not going to be interested in spending the money that it takes to purchase a house with a home theater.

Do You Watch Movies Frequently?

When determining how much the theater is actually going to be used, you want to consider how frequently you actually sit down to watch movies. If you greatly enjoy watching movies then it will likely be worth the investment for you. However, if you find you rarely watch movies, or simply turn one on while you do chores around the house, then it won’t be worth the money or space.

You and your family are the only people who can decide if a home theater is the right answer for you. Home theaters are a luxury, and lend a level of prestige to those who have one, but they are not necessary. If you have even the slightest doubt about a home theater, skip it and use the money for something that you will truly benefit from.
