Keep Toasty: Tips for Staying Warm When Camping in the Fall

One of the most difficult things about camping is trying to sleep comfortably. In the summers, it’s too hot, and it can be too cold in the fall and winter. Unfortunately, it’s almost impossible to cool down during warm summer nights. However, there are ways to keep warm during those fall months. If you’re thinking about camping in the fall, here are some items you should take to ensure that your night is an enjoyable one.

Pack Layers

One of the simplest tricks to staying warm is also the most effective, and that is using layers. During the day, multiple layers of clothing will keep you warm and the principle remains the same at night. Multiple blankets will allow you to trap insulating air between the layers which will keep you warm. If you prefer sleeping bags, one with multiple layers (an inner bag) would be ideal. Often times, sleeping bags will provide information about the temperatures they are rated for, so a little research will help you find the right bag for your trip.

Warmers

In addition to layers, you’ll want to consider other means of keeping warm. Small hand and feet warmers can be purchased and used to keep your extremities warm when the temperature wanes. If you anticipate serious cold, you could also invest in a small propane heater to use for your tent. Turning on a small heater a bit before you go to bed will ensure that your tent is nice and toasty when you’re trying to fall asleep. Just remember to turn it off before you pass out!

Check the Weather and Location

Aside from bringing certain items, various precautions can be taken to make sure you aren’t going to be too cold on your fall campout. Checking the weather before you go on a camping trip is always a good idea, but especially in the fall. It’s always good to know when the weather might change and having this knowledge can help you avoid taking a camping trip that might become too cold to handle. Another way to avoid becoming colder than you anticipate is to pick the right location for camping. Avoid low areas where cold air might settle so that your cold nights don’t become colder.

With these things in mind, you’ll be able to ensure that your next night out camping is a warm one!
