Neat Window DIY Projects

Say sayonara to regular ole blinds, drapes, and stuffy valances. There are a lot of cool things you can do to your windows other than buying fancy window treatments. Here are a few fun projects you can do yourself to give your windows that extra pump of pizzazz that will liven up your space.

DIY Marbled Glass

If you’re looking for a colorful and bright way to make your room really pop, try a do-it-yourself marbled glass effect. You can find glass stones in any color at a dollar store or craft store. This is an inexpensive project and it’s relatively easy to do. Just glue the pebbles onto the glass in any design you want. If you want to keep more light out, treat it like a mosaic and spread grout between the pebbles. This gives your window more of a stained glass effect. This works well in a bathroom that you want to keep private, and doesn't need to be cleaned constantly like curtains or blinds.

Monogrammed Panes

If you want to personalize your windows, try using acrylic paint to monogram your windowpane. Just print any letter off so you can use your paper as a stencil. Tape it to the outside of the window and paint from the inside using a flat brush. This keeps your monogram painting safe from the elements so it lasts longer. Get creative and paint on alternating panes to add an even more unique touch. Monogrammed windows look excellent framed by coordinating drapes, but should not be done on windows with view-obstructing blinds.

Create Your Own Curtains

Want a truly unique window treatment idea? Design your own drapes. Depending on your window length and size, you can use pillowcases, sheets, or shower curtains. Using seam tape, you can create the length you want from any piece of fabric to create a look that is exclusively your own. This allows you to customize the look and feel of your space. You can make your own unique curtains to match every room in your home.

DIY Frosted Windows

If you want privacy without sacrificing sunlight, you can frost your windows. Unlike blinds and shades, frosted windows allow in tons of natural light and still protect you from nosy neighbors. You can save money by frosting your windows yourself. First, you should create a stencil you will like for your window treatment. Once you’ve created a stencil, take some contact paper and trace your shape in a recurring design to create a pattern. Then, cut out each design, peel off the back of the contact paper, and stick it onto your window. The contact paper mimics the look and privacy of frosted windows for a fraction of the price. You can create any shape or design you like and change it as often as you want.
