Photography Blogs: Do You Have What It Takes?

One great way to show off your professional photography is by starting a blog. A blog gives you a space to share your images with friends, family members, and potential clients. Blogs can also help you launch your business in professional photography. You can also share information about your photos and post tips and tricks for better photography. Here are some helpful hints to see if you are ready to start your own blog.

Look at Your Content

Are you producing enough new images to keep up with a blog? Or do you have enough past content to keep your blog updated regularly? Many people never post again after their first post. Make sure that isn’t you by gathering images that you want to post and start getting them organized. You can divide them into separate folders on your desktop to get them ready to post in the future.

Make Sure Your Images are Related

Most people follow a blog because they have an interest in its content. So pick an area you are most interested and stick with photos of that genre. It won't hurt to share something a little out of your comfort zone occasionally, but try to stick with a common theme.

Determine a Schedule for Posting.

Some blogs post everyday and some only post weekly or biweekly. This choice is yours, but once you determine how often you are going to post, it’s important to stick to it. When you have an audience for your blog you want to keep them engaged and involved in your blog. One way to do this is to keep them coming back to view your work. Some bloggers choose to do weekly themes or challenges. As an example,  you could do a black-and-white theme one week and post two to three photos per day each day of the week.

Promote Yourself

If you have decided to start a photoblog, your next task is to promote it. You can do this by seeking out photography blogs that you enjoy and engage their comment sections. Make sure you are making meaningful conversation rather than just spamming your blog link on someone else's page. Make connections with people that have similar photography interests and would truly enjoy what you are posting. You can also share your blog with your family and friends to let them see what you have been working on. They can provide great recommendations to future clients. Word-of-mouth referrals tend to lead to quality clients who will keep coming back.
