Storage Containers: Your Closet's Best Friend

Aren’t you tired of digging through the chaos of your closet? If you want to rip your hair out because you can’t find anything in the closet clutter, then it’s time to manage your closet storage. PRONTO.

By employing a few easy storage solutions, you can turn that sloppy mess into an organized dream. First, identify what exactly your biggest problem is. Do you need more space for your clothes? Are your shoes covering every inch of floor space? Once you’ve identified the biggest storage problem in your closet you’ll be better equipped to fix it.

Shoe Storage

If shoe storage is your problem, then the solution can be simple. Storing shoes on a shelf is an excellent way to keep them off the floor and bring them closer to eye level, which can keep you from forgetting to wear certain pairs. Placing shoes up high will also keep them out of reach from any shoe-loving pups you have. If your closet doesn’t have a shelf or you need more shelving, you can purchase shelf-like shoe racks to place in the floor of your closet. A floor shoe rack isn't always the best solution though. In this case, you need a hanging shoe organizer. Hanging shoe organizers come in two styles – those that attach over the closet door or hang from the closet rod. If you’re low on rod space, opt for the over-the-door shoe organizer. These also keep shoes out of the way and take up very little space.

Clothing Storage Solutions

Unfortunately, walk-in closets aren’t a reality for everyone, and many of us struggle to find room to store all of our clothing in the closet. When you’re low on space, it is crucial to be smart about how and where you keep things. This is why under bed storage is so convenient. It takes up little space and is out of the way, but is easy to access. To declutter and streamline your closet, try to store away seasonal clothing that you don’t need year-round. Use under bed storage to stow away winter jackets during the summertime, and then switch them out with swimsuits and shorts when it becomes cold. I recommend purchasing two or three storage containers to free up as much closet space as possible. Use one to hold winter jackets and sweaters, another for winter shoes, and the third for extra clothing items, like t-shirts or sweat pants.

Donate What You Don’t Wear

Another great way to maintain your closet storage is to go through your closet at the end of every season to determine clothing you no longer like, want, or can wear. Donate these items to your local Salvation Army. This creates space and does some good in the world at the same time.

Organize It

Once you’ve improved your closet storage, you want to have a plan to keep everything tidy and in its place. The best way to do this is to organize your clothing and shoes. You can either organize by color (my personal preference) or by clothing type. Organizing your clothing makes it easier to find you want to wear. For your shoes, organize them by type. Place all sandals, tennis shoes, ballet flats, ankle boots, and taller boots together. You’ll be glad you took the time to categorize your closet on the next morning you’re running late to work.
