Tips for Tending to Outdoor Furniture

Outdoor furniture can turn almost any yard into an ideal place to relax or gather together with friends and family. Whether you have a nice bench or a full patio set complete with a table and chairs, it’s important to take steps to keep your outdoor furniture attractive and useful for years to come.

Keep Furniture Away From Still Water

Having a pool, birdbath, or small pond in your yard might seem like a great idea, but it’s best to keep your furniture away from still water since it attracts bugs. This is especially true when it comes to mosquitoes. If you have a fountain, make sure the water is running. If bugs are still a problem, try rubbing dryer sheets on the fabric of the furniture once a week to keep the insects away.

Clean With the Seasons

Outdoor furniture should be cleaned thoroughly with each season. While many people have taken a power washer to outdoor furniture, this will shorten its lifespan and damage the material. Instead, mix a small amount of mild soap with about a gallon of water and wipe down the furniture with a soft rag. Be careful not to use steel wool since it can actually damage some surfaces. You can also use a small amount of vinegar or bleach to wipe away tough stains and grime. For cushions and cloth, simply putting them in the washer and letting them air dry will clean them. For larger cushions, spray with a mixture of mild soap and warm water, and use the hose to rinse them out.

Properly Store Furniture When Not In Use

Most outdoor furniture will wear very quickly if left outside during the winter. Move your furniture to a garage or storage unit to protect the material. Don’t store cushions in plastic bags, since it can get humid and cause mold and mildew to grow on the fabric. It’s also important to keep furniture away from direct sunlight and heat. Consider moving the table and chairs into a more shaded area to keep it from fading and cracking from the heat of the sun when not in use.

Prolong the Life of the Furniture

Aside from properly cleaning and storing your furniture, you can also take a few extra steps to keep it in good condition for years. Lemon or orange oil is great for polishing wood and wicker, not to mention it will give your furniture a clean, new look. Cover cushions and fabric with a small layer of baking soda and vacuum it up to remove dirt and allergens that can quickly degrade the quality of the fabric. Patio covers are also a good investment to keep your furniture protected from the sun and harsh weather.

Well-maintained outdoor furniture can make your yard look more inviting. By following these tips, you can keep your furniture attractive and functional.
